Releasing GDU prematurely?

Marked

Hi all,

I am thinking about releasing GDU prematurely. That means releasing it when a large number of the sections are yet to be coded.

To be honest, I have lost a lot of motivation and faith in RPG Maker. Perhaps due to a combination of the whithering activity of the more active RMXPU members, or the anti-competitive actions of enterbrain that is trying its best to ensure that there should be only one community for their software.

Why should I help promote the usgae of their software when their actions are trying to ruin the site I spent so long trying to build?

At any rate, I think continuing development on GDU would be a big waste of my time. I no longer have big hopes for it, but I do have a way of continuing its development dispite all of this. If I release it now for everyone to use, then I can build the rest slowly over time.

Releasing it now would mean very limited functionality: only the forums and chatroom would be accessable. It may be option to divide users between GDU and RMXPU until all of the content is shifted across.

Thoughts?

Go for it I say. Forums alone I think would be enough for many people, and getting the place up and running could help build hype back up. I do hope that eventually a resource database and gallery and other goodies will be gotten up and running, but until then, forums are enough.

You can always grey out all the buttoms that don't work so people don't click on them until there ready, so even if you lauch the site with missing features we'll know on which ones to actually click. Ya it is a shame that the community is dieing.

'tis unfortunate. Perhaps enterbrain's anti-competition mindframe is more reason to move on to GDU. Then, while we can still support RPG Maker to an extent, the main focus can finally move away to something that has the potential to grow.

I think being a community that is there to help people get into game development in general/platform to show case game development tools/games/etc. is much more appealing than a community centered around RPG Maker.

Releasing the website before it is finished sounds risky, but in the same breath I'd REALLY hate to see all the hard work/effort you have put into this project go to waste.

What about becoming a completely community-centric website? As in, the main focus being the forums, even perhaps the main site could be the forums? That might be a little more work than worth it, as well as that is risky in its own respects as well (although, as it stands, that's kind of what we are right now). But then, if that was the case, the forums could be based around user-generated content (although, technically, that's how it works now as well...)

So I guess the point would be, maybe, it would be better to actually head in that direction, rather than try so hard to get the parallelism between website/community.

Just my two cents. I'm not too sure what the usage statistics of this site are for the non-community stuff/etc. but, releasing it prematurely with just forums doesn't sound like it would be too bad. As long as members know what's happening, and can still post/communicate, I don't really see it being a community-breaking issue.

Either way, you have my support on the final decision.

okay guys. I will not know any necro - comment in this. The decision is too hard to pick. But in order to save this forum population, i really agreed with the other member. You can still make the sites slowly.

(P.S : Don't forget marked because We all support you.)

Realeasing GDU is an idea that has alot of potential to grow especially for

those new to Rpg maker software. Abandoning the idea due to competition from (Enterbrain's Site) where beginner's may posssibly find themselves alienated from those with more advanced skills, just may undermine the confidence of many seeking both support and in most cases, resources and knowledge of the program. If you follow the same guidelines that attracted members of all skill levels on your new site as well as your parent site has,(IMO) you should do well. Don't try to compete, just continue to do what works best. -Darmok0
