      I've used Unity (mind you, I never did anything with it) and it seems like a solid engine. :) Many people I've talked to say it's a great engine for both beginners and experts. You'll only need the free version (which you can still sell your games commercially with) since the Pro version only offers portability to (I believe) Androids. As for consoles, that requires buying a license.
