Super cool update #1

I'm very pleased to announced that I finally got around to creating thumbnails for the resources. Until now, viewing the resources section would suck your bandwidth (the site's too) and take ages to load because the full images were being loaded in the category view. Now, each image has a tiny super compressed progressive jpeg thumbnail, meaning those pages should load up super quick! Once you click a thumbnail, the original good quality image will load up. Eg

In case you guys didn't notice, I've been working on the comments system a fair bit lately. The major update is reworking the system so that each script, tutorial, collective (and all the others to come) are linked their own topic table in the database...blah blah... enabling me to have every new content item, topic, comment etc show up in the latest posts module. Previously I had to run like 1,000 queries to the DB to get all that info in a single list.

 

So, commenting and actually creating scripts/tuts is exactly the same as posting and creating topics, in that sense.

 

Comments have expanded to tutorials and the new collective series we'll be running from now on. Eg;

btw, I'm having a weird bug with the chat. maybe if it's just my computer, but sometimes the chat 'duplicates' a comment and shows it twice (or more). sometimes re-entering the chat will fix it, sometimes not.

Love all the new changes. Especially how comments always show up in recent posts, makes it so much easier to find and help people on old and new content.

Can we comment on our comments then comment on those comments :shock: ?

Yea, that's always been there and everyone gets it at some point. I think it happens when your internet slows down, so the chat thinks you logged out, but you didn't so it logs you back in...a second time. Used to happen to me all the time while I had multiple tabs open while in chat. It was even in the old chat, long before GDU. Maybe Mark just doesn't know how to fix it...or can't. :\

At least it's better than when the old chat just randomly booted you instead sometimes for having slow internet. I almost miss that chat, all the bugs just sort of added to this site feeling like an internet home :P

Glad you like the updates. I've been working on expanding existing stuff lately. Even though I'm busy, I just had the idea of how to get the comments system to integrate with topics/posts and had to write it up. It's really cool how it works :grin: I can retrieve all new comments and posts in a single query. Which of course makes it faster. I'll also be working on speed when I get time :)

As a side note, I want to say how nice RMU is currently looking and working, it feels and looks slick/ professional! Very nice I love it.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. We got some nice systems. I got way off track at one point but things are stable now.

 

It probably would have been better to have these systems a few years ago :P But nvm, that's how things go. I am quite keen to complete my work here with a games section, a slightly advanced, customizable and full-featured system. I feel like if I don't, the past couple of years of learning to write websites would be a waste. With all the systems I've already written and the awesome JS/interface plugins out there, should be good.

Ya, I gusta :3 If you're seriously serious about it, I could set up a category in the Tutorials section for you.

It may be useful to have an "other" category and a few sub categories for creative works that aren't game makin'. The tutorials system is similar to making a topic in the sense that it shows in the recent posts category and people can discuss it like topics. Some member's were all, dude, I just wana make a topic so I can discuss it... (which is odd), but I built a really cool editor

Will  be making a syntax section as well which I will keep stored in a section somewhere so people can reference it :) oh also it says you get 20 points for a tutorial but when my last tutorial was approved 2 days ago I didn't get any :( still don't have then now either, So what are the rules behind those?

The deal is that that's a misrepresentation and that you technically you don't get 20 points because I haven't coded that in yet :P Reason being is that points are a reasonably new addition and I've been mishing through exams for the last month (last one on friday wooh!).

 

Although, I did transfer 20 points manually to you.. sure you didn't get them?

 

I added a web dev category for you. You can jump right in and start messing around now if you wana. Your tuts are unpublished and no one will ever seen them unless you hit "Publish", where a mod will approve it.

and ok cool will start working on alphabetizing a syntax in about an hour or so after I've play AC4 for a bit lol :p

 

btw how much do you know about php? just asking because I play this awesome game that is built with php and wanted to make a sort of spin off from that game myself

Oh shoot you're right... I must have given them to someone else. I updated them by writing a query and manually typing your user ID, 24426, guess I made a typo and gave those points to some random :D

 

I know a fair bit of PHP in a relatively limited scope. Eg I wrote the entire website here (minus the forum) and I'm pretty useful for making a web application. A game on the otherhand... that's not exactly what PHP is for and I'd imagine you wouldn't be doing much at all in PHP except managing the database stuff, the rest is probably javascript. So if that's correct, the PHP stuff should be really straight forward and you're just sending data back and forwards with JSON. It's actually quite fun to do that stuff. Do you wana make a game? I made a post here a while ago where this dude had an RPG system up in JS, using RMXP graphics, so you had this RMXP style game going in the browser. I was thinking of making an online RPG style thing for members where they can go online an interact on RMXP styled maps but there wasn't much interest in it.

 

When I was pretty new to web dev I made a php/js battle system where users on the forum could actually fight each other. That was literally early September 2010, coz we had a quake and I got time off uni to mess around with stuffs :3
