Tileset editor.

Recommended Posts

Hello people. I find the default tileset editor in rpg maker to be dissatisfying. I've been thinking about possibly making an external editor to make it easier for people to manipulate tilesets. But I'm not sure what features you would need, and how useful or effective it would be. The main problem I want to address is how hard it is to build tilesets, since right now you have to do it manually, with an external image tool. From there on I would like to let people edit the other attributes of tiles, like passability, height and such. Perhaps even a database of individual tiles, ready to put together and use in your maps.

So my questions are: How practical would making such a tool be? How interested are you in having one? And what features would you want in it?

sure the RM editor isn't fantastic, but then again it's come a long way. Its better than the early days. But there are a few features I'd like added, more than 3 layers would be nice, tho i bet 5 layers might make things lag. can't think of anything else to add to make it better, but i bet lots of people can fill in suggestion for you Salt.

This was cool. The concept is that you have a bunch of tiles, all individually cut out and supplied. Then you simply browse the collection of tiles and drag and drop onto the canvas. All through the browser.

Luckily RG took a screenie of it:

I was pretty nu at coding stuffs back then. I bet I'd make this really awesome if I attempted it again. But I won't. >:]

Since I have photoshop (which allows me to do whatever graphics editing I feel necessary) I don't really have issues with the in-engine part.  Especially since I figured out that when I edit one of my custom tilesets, I can upload it and rewrite the previous, keeping all the passabilities I've previously set (instead of deleting the custom tileset to replace it and losing my passabilities).
