What Inspired You to Make Video Games

Recommended Posts

Just because nobody has really asked it yet, I might as well start.

Personally, I was a huge fan of video games, and I was quite alone in my life with no one to talk to. I've been writing stories since I was 8, inspired by any game I played such as the epicness of Final Fantasy, the deep meanings of Earthbound, the fun and weird nature of Clay Fighter, the creative level design of Link to the Past, and lots of other things.

I used to write a lot of stories and poems when I was a child. Also I have worked with computer since I was 4 (Mostly playing). I always liked computer, But I had never thought about game development, I had no idea how games are made. One day when I was bored I installed a game that my father downloaded for me before (I think I was 10). It was the first RPG I played and it was done in RMXP.  Later I found RMVX but I couldn't work with it so I totally forgot about game development and all. When I was 13 accidentally I found RMXP and I loved it. My imagination started to grow and I totally fell in love with game development. I really have no idea what inspired me...It was all an accident lol

So I didn't choose game development, Game development chose me xD #meme

Basically I just played some video games and thought "hm...what if there was one that was like this..." and then one day my brother downloaded RPG Maker 2000  and we liked that, so we eventually bought RMXP.

I'm a writer, always loved making stories since I was a kid. Eventually, I just lost the will to write and I dropped out of it, gave up on writing anything new. But after playing a ton of RPG Maker games and getting exposed to some Hetalia fangames, I found myself wanted to make some as well. What better than a way to tell a story in both writing and graphics? The idea of it was exciting. I pirated RMXP and played around with it, startng my first project which was a failure. I didn't really have any interest in game development at the time, so I gave up for a few months--but then I started a new project (Insanitalia, which I have been working on since), Germany got involved, and now I'm really into it. :)

So I didn't choose game development, Game development chose me xD #meme

That would be "In mother Iran, you don't choose game development, game development chooses you"

Also something that gets me to come up with stories to to play my list of fantasy music and daydream of stories behind the music. That really helps when I'm trying to expand or create a story on the beauty side of the game.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFUPc80ssNv6GSyRELgdR9CF0dI_9Ul09

That there would be my fantasy playlist that inspired some of the things in the universe Wonder's War takes place in.

Also there are other methods to creating games that I find work for me.

Like coming up with an idea for a character, like "Devon Styllis, a self absorbed guy who is just a total badass when it comes to fighting, and he fights against the Abaddon Political party, whom ruined his happy life in the past, and plan to destroy the world over their lust for money. He is only driven by his own passion of hate for them and he's not doing it to save the world." And just shape the world and plot around that simple character design. Feel free to take it for your own game if you please.

Or the same thing works for doing other characters, like the antagonist, or a sub-main character. That is one of the easiest ways to come up with a story. For my Wonder's War game, it was the main antagonist who started that story.

Hope it helps.

LARGE STORY TIME!

This will be about my entire history of game development and where i stand now.

For me it started a long time ago. It all started in 1994 when i was 4. I use to watch my dad play final fantasy 3(actually 6) for SNES and thats when i got really interested in RPG's. I will never forget that RPG since its the very first RPG i have ever seen and always told myself that i wanted to be a game maker. When playing games i always thought about what could make the game better and that i could make a better game.

Then a few more years went buy and my mom bought a computer. I didn't even know how game design worked at the time because i never really used a computer before besides using MAC in school and thought games were made on the console lawl.

So after my mom bought a computer we finally got dialup and i was so excited because i didn't know much about this internet thing.

I looked up how to make an rpg game and came across rpg toolkit and decided to give it a go. It was fun at first but then i got into the advanced stuff. Every fricken thing required this thing called rpgcode and man was it so confusing that i gave up on my dreams of becoming a game designer because it was so hard to make anything good without programming.

As time went by i tried it again then discovered rpg maker 2000 and fell in love with it besides the shitty battle system. I got use to it and discovered that there is this thing called rpg maker 2003. I loved it even more because it had the battle system that i always seen in the RPG's that i played before. So i started creation on a game called The Legendary Swordsman. The game was going well but back then i didn't want to show any my creations because i knew for a fact that it wasn't good enough for the public.

Then a year later rpg maker xp releases and i tried out the trial and loved it even more than all the other makers i tried before. Sadly my trial ended and so did my game creation.... till i discovered this thing called RPG Maker XP PK Edition. I continued using the illegal version of rpg maker xp for a few years and loved every single moment of it since there was so much to learn and this thing called scripts where i can change whatever i want. Sad part is i didnt know anything about scripting and was turned off by it because it was complex, looked scary and i was scared to break something.

I finally tried my hand at scripting in a new project because why the hell not. The worse that is going to happen is i delete the project and start another one. So about 40 projects later i finally started to grasp what scripting was all about. How i started was doing simple things like changing text to funny stuff like Equipment to Strap-ons and stuff(i was really immature back then). Then i finally got into more advanced stuff like adding the gold and steps windows to Scene_End. Then i learned how windows worked and how to make my own custom stuff just by playing around and editing the defaults.

I finally got old enough to afford my own stuff and had my own bank account with a debit card and FINALLY bought rpg maker xp. I must have used rpg maker for many more years after i bought it becoming a master at it. Then rpg maker vx and ace come out and fucked things up making me stick with rpg maker xp even more.

Then i discovered clicker games like Cookie Clicker and got addicted then i got sick of clicker games being all the same, click this 1 resource then buy upgrades to get more of it. I decided i wanted to make my own and add more gameplay elements than your standard clicker games. I came up with ideas that i wanted like more than 1 resource, skills like mining, smithing, crafting, woodcutting, combat. I soon discovered that rpg makers limitations are not going to cut it for what i need. From what i seen rpg maker only supported ints that wont go past the billions.

Keep in mind that i still don't really know coding at all and its June 2014.

Since rpg maker wouldn't fit my game creation needs anymore i got into unity and finally learned coding. I started by trying to make a bitcoin clicker game called Cryptomatic but that didn't go very well but it was a good learning experience. Then in august i think 2014 i started work on a clicker game with various types of items, and skills that needed to be leveled up to unlock more items. This game is called Mine Clicker. The main goal of Mine Clicker is to make a game people will remember and change clicker games forever. Mine Clicker is where i truly learned how to code.I thought coding was going to be hard because i had such a hard time doing anything in rpg maker.

Once i started to code it was so easy. It was way easier than learning how to code in rpg maker because i didn't have to worry about dumb API and method shit and learning someone elses code. If you think coding is way to hard in rpg maker please stop and try to learn real coding in something like unity. Trust me learning coding from nothing is easier than learning with something like rpg maker.

Now that its 2015 and i been using unity for a year and id say i learned more in the past year than in the past 10 years with rpg maker. rpg maker was holding me back from learning game development like it should be learned and done.

TL;DR? Come on man seriously i spent all that time and your going to read the short version. You are so lazy.

Basically i got inspired by games in general. Longer story short i want to make games better than they are and push game development to the next level.

TL;DR the TL;DR? Ok for you ultra lazy people ill keep this short.

Games.

I got two parts explaining my story.

Inspiration of being a Game Developer:

Well what inspired me in making games? Well i played tons of great video games in my childhood. It still a huge hobby of mine and to this day i enjoy it.

I liked how Video Games made fun something memorable and emotional. Developers would be very competitive and at times innovative.

As a kid i enjoy games like Banjo Kazooie or games like 007 Goldeneye. I love games like Metal Gear because they're so artistic and cinematic. I like good stories and wonderful music.

Good music is suppose to be this. Not that dubstep bullshit we get today.

My favorite games are The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

I also love 2D games as well. My first console was a Sega Genesis -- Because Sega does what Nintendon't. (THAT'S RIGHT GO BANKRUPT IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS.) What actually sparked me to become a developer was because i loved movies and going to the movies was awesome when i was a kid. Most of the times i would go to the movies with my parents and i'd come out brainstorming with how games can do even better.

I still have my 6 year old vision and i haven't lost any of that mind-set when developing games. In other words i haven't lost my child imagination.

Also i'd would get curiosity in how these developers made their games. What actually sparked my interest to it's max was Runescape, because it was a fun experience and let me see how multiplayer could be huge and fun. Sharing an experience together!

WHAT MADE YOU BE A GAME DEVELOPER TODAY?:

My first thought of becoming a game developer started when i was in Elementary school, because video games were the future of media. Though i would get laughed at for choosing a childish thing, i still wanted to work on my carrer even if i'd get bullied from choosing something so childish. I wanted to learn how to make a game. At the time game engines like Unreal would cost a lot of money for me and i would never get permission from my parents to buy it. One day i struck gold and found RPG Maker XP, i of course pirated it(because the link i was given was free download so i thought it was free) and play around with it. I couldn't get the hang of it at first, it was hard to use and most of all confusing. I was developing a game which i didn't really call it a game...most like a total disaster.

One day, i met Rgangsta on a different community forum and he was making a game in RPG MAKER XP, but then got canned because he wanted to make an Assassin's Creed/Prince of Persia game, which we called Tsurugi's Hold. I told him if i could join him in development and he said that i could be a mapper.

I didn't have any experience with story-writing, features,  coding, mapping, etc. It was hard and difficult to understand but Rgangsta with the small experience he had taught me and showed me how to do everything. Sometimes he would actually share some games to see what his vision was for his own game. I learned and took note, i even took note of my favorite games too. Eventually Tsurugi's Hold got cancelled because we both lost the game files and didn't do a back-up file.

I left Rgangsta and took the experience he given to me, but i couldn't do a game like he did previously. I gave up on my game as it didn't result well.

Then i jumped to Unity since i thought it would be more easier, but i was totally wrong about that.

I then decided to return working with Rgangsta and we both made CyberDrive Ninja. I learned so much from this game too.

Today i owe him more then ever, he his my best buddy...I trust him so much. We've been very good pals to this day. If it wasn't for Rgangsta i'd wouldn't be here on GDU or making a game with Drago. I have a good amount of experience to now show what i can really do and it's all thanks to Rgangsta.

That's my story.

ADHD version:

Games and movies made me a developer. Runescape made my definitive decision of being a dev.

Rgangsta helped me to understand the concept of game development with his resources.

Ha we all have similar stories.
Like many when I was younger my brother, friend joel and I loved to play xbox and stuff, we liked to play Nazi Zombies. And alot of the time we would sit in a room and just write a zombie story for hours! I dont know where those stories are now... Wish i knew. Anyways, ever since then Ive loved playing video games, it went from xbox to pc. My first pc was some shit Dell inspiron 1501, it had like a ton of viruses or something XD. Then i saved money like crazy and bought the computer i have today (bought it like a year or so ago) And have just been playing games.

What made me decide strictly that I want to be a game dev is seeing the amazing games other people have made. The amazing story lines, and how unique they were. I always love a good ending. But now I dont have much motivation for RPG games :( I could maybe work on mine if i listened to some toons, but I just feel like Im not getting far with it, like people wont enjoy it like they do other rpg games. Ill say one thing, its certainly better already than ALOT of games out there but i wish to make some type of game with an amazing story line and where everything fits in with each other perfectly. I dont know quite how to explain it. But i guess this is how: My dream is to make a game that will inspire people, that will leave people in awe at the ending, make them sit in their chair and think " What do i do now? ". Thats the exact feeling i get after watching a good show or beating a good game, an amazing ending that people will remember

Ok this is mighty ridiculous for me, I'll be honest.

I don't have a story that is like anyone else's, and mine is much simpler. I started out computers when I was 2, and I could change any setting on the computer, messing up with my parents all the time. When I was 3, I was browsing the internet and found a lot of things by searching the logos on my toys. Mind that I figured this all out myself. When I was 4, I was messing around on game websites and had fun in mspaint, it was also the same year I got a ps2, which replaced my family's previous consoles, like the SNES and the PS1, which I would play Final Fantasy 10 on, played with Earthbound, Castlevania, Gex 3, and tons of other games as well. When I was 5, I really began my playing career and was in love with pop cap games, I've played sooo many different puzzle games, search and finds, item falls, tons, but I had no idea that video gaming would be a passion. When I was 6, I began watching Youtube, as it came out a month after my birthday, and I would watch all the videos that came out, and I also got addicted to my mother and father's media library on Window's Media Player, and I would beat all the games on the PS2, SNES, and PS1 by this time, including Final Fantasy X and Earthbound, and this was also the year I got my Xbox, and would play many arcade styled games on it like SSX and Splashdown, this was the year my video game life came about.

When I was 7, I got introduced to the three greatest games that inspired me to start a career in video games, Okami, Tales of the Abyss, and Final Fantasy 12. These are the games I cherish the most, as Okami had the coolest artwork, beautiful soundtracks, a creative battle and exploration system, lovable characters, hilarious comedy, and great linking to the Japanese culture which was awe inspiring to me at the time. Then Tales of the Abyss, which had alright character voices, but great designs on characters, weapons, the world, the cities, and just to mention the anime style cut scenes which were epic as hell during fighting scenes, and it had pretty funny moments such as the sauna bath scene with Guy, and the lore and story of the game is so intriguing to me as to how well it was orchestrated, *then points you towards the OST of the game (which sounds so fitting with the game). And Final Fantasy XII was a gem to me at the time, for I loved the graphics which were pure epic and majestic, and the details into everything like the hunt papers, the monsters, the airships, the characters, the buildings, the scenery, and the soundtrack was fully orchestrated and awesome, which added some depth to each area, and sounded nice on repeat, and the antagonists actually looked evil while looking too much on the too much side, like Vayne and Gabranth, though I can call down it on the character development, which is non-existent for the main characters, but it is more heaved on the antagonists, and some of the level physics are quite...

not-even-possible-28418.jpg

and some of the speech and cliches are...

secret-identities-28418.jpg

but other than these two flaws of characters (which I enjoyed with the dumb humor implied sometimes), and this sometimes bad level geography which felt restrictive on some forms of exploration, you can't deny that maps are good, because when you look at the map for the great crystal, or the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea map, you'll realize that exploration is quite handed to you nicely, and backtracking is allowed except when you are in a few areas of the game that you either need to escape or complete. And let's not deny that the characters weren't interesting, Vaan and Penelo might be annoying, but they were fighting for the freedom of their city, and it just happens to be what the other four more fan favourite characters are doing, Ashe was an awesome princess with rights to be angry at many things, as her life really sucked after... and Bashe really got hit bad when his twin brother killed so many people that ties all 6 main characters together, and everyone blamed this unlucky guy. Then Fran is fan service up the bonkers. And everyone wants to bang that sky pirate Balthier for just being a badass sky pirate with a lovable personality. FFXII was a good game, and now on to something else.

When I was 8, my mom and father thought I was going to become a psychotic video game satanist worshiper serial killer, so they took away all my games that year and all my access to media, so no YouTube, no internet explorer, no RPGs, no drawing in MSpaint, no music on Window's media player, and handed me a bunch of learning and typing games! Seriously! Fungustoad to that! While I spent almost all this year of my life with learning and typing programs, I did learn complex math, complicated science, interesting history, and how to type at super fast speeds, but I was depressed as I couldn't play the super fun games I once did, and I ordered my parents at the end of the year to have my games back, which they thankfully did. This was also the year when I began writing stories much like the games I used to play because I was feeling depressed separated from these games I loved with a passion. When I was 9-12, I really lost any friends that I had in little amounts, and I was alone, but I kept playing video games as a passion, for they really got me to keep living, as I was depressed beyond what anybody could understand, for I was bullied by students, teachers, and peers, and nobody was into the same stuff I was always adoring, for they liked sports, gossiping, and that was it. None were artistic, creative, mature, and all were apparently better than me in every way. I would always fake sick just to stay home and play the one thing that made me happy in my lonely life. I snapped at the end of 6th grade, was when everybody became afraid of me, and knew that I had enough of their bullpoop and showed that I wouldn't put up with them no longer, and I would beat up their ass. Then 13-15, I still stayed lonely, but it was a new school, and the teachers knew what happened to me, and were kind to me, but the students got word of what I was like, and stayed away from me, it was also the time when I found a talent in entertaining the young and disabled like no one else in my community could, and I was always watching over them and caring for them, but I was still playing games and watching YouTube. It was also the time when I got into the FPS genre, and I think that just killing things in it at the time helped me release years of anger on stuff, I also decided what I want to be during this period of time, I wanted tell my many years of stories that I've written in the form of my most favourite passion, and I wrote down different mechanics for each game and layouts for design. Now I'm 16, and life is pretty well for me, as I found friends again who share similar interests as me, and I found RPG maker VX Ace, which took me a while to get a handle of with all the features available, and I started my journey into making Wonder's War 4 months after figuring out what the mighty hell I was doing. And I have no plans of ever cancelling a project, never, and I promise that to everybody.

So that was my Not-Polraudio-long story of how I got into video games, and game development. And now if you'll excuse me, I have some scene of the main character questioning what the heck a Fashran Boggart is to make. Ardi out.

Also this is @zahraa:

weird-06-28418.png

That's a Fashran Boggart of the Teal's swamp called Fashran in the East Nova lands... if you were wondering. This thing is rather annoying, as when it dies to most things, it will multiply into two other Boggarts, making it very annoying if you don't know how to properly kill one, which implies it as a boggart, due to these things being very annoying. Maybe I shouldn't have made that out of text reference, then again, we are all crazy on this website, so it's alright.

I don't know my origins, I just really wanted to spend years on a game stockpiling tons of lore, and telling a typical tale that I don't see around anymore.

When I was sick as a kid one time, my parents hired a PS1 and cash bandicoot from the video store and that was awesome.

My dad and older brother were always better than with me computers, so I learned some things from them. My older brother messed around with game dev and the one before RMXP. Before RMXP I actually messed around with 3D Game Studio, but I ended up using RMXP a lot more after being apart of RMXP forums. My dad bought me a computer when I was quite young too... since I'm 24 now, back then it was something.

You never told me (at least me) why you created this site. Did you hate stuff from other RPGMAKERXP sites had or did you just simply wanted to make the site as an experiment?

The opposite, I loved the RM communities in those days and wanted to make my own, like dozens of others. On one cold evening, I made an invision forum and this was born http://z3.invisionfree.com/RPGXP_Unlimited/index.php?act=idx (which I've noticed has been hacked and the images replaced with ads). This was a very, very long time ago when I was 15. In less than a year it will a decade D:

There's a story about how I created this site and the things we've had on this site, but its probably boring for you guys.

I got inspired by a teacher of all things XD, It was my I.T teacher, He saw that I was more into developing game's, website's.etc than the actual work we had, so he managed to get a few programme's installed on the school computers (Im talking Unreal 2.etc) and I got really into it, then I also started to make graphics at home, write short stories (Which I stopped doing really Q_Q).etc. Then I stopped (This is when I got an xbox) and forgot about it..until earlier this year when I decided to stop work (I was on crap wage anyway and part time jobs im applying for pay better) and go back into education for game's design (with a bit of a push from family and friends), so now I'm going to attend college for Level 3 Game's Design (Highest Available course with out going to uni) and im using RPG VX Ace at home (everynow and again, im stuck on the planning for the game).
