Scripting vs Eventing. Classic discussion. Which is the best? RGSS Scripts or Eventing.

I started this topic because of the surprising poll votes on the website. Eventing is on 60.7% and Scripting only 39.3%. It seems eventing is more popular by 20%. Really?

Vote away and don't forget to justify your votes with a reply. I'm interested to see if the poll here will differ from the poll from the website.

Scripts do make games look pretty.

But it's the events that give the meat to game making. I know many, including Leon, would argue that scripting is what eventing is based on. I know that. With RGSS, eventing is now based on scripts.

I believe it's because of eventing that RPG Maker so user friendly.

Eventing allows you to do everything from NPC speech to making the player go from point A to point B with relative ease.

I like scripting better but eventing is good but it takes alot more.

I like them both so i made up my own thing called E-Scripting

E-Scripting is where you mix events with scripts

I'm not really to good with either but I think they are both in fundamental importantances in their own ways. So therefore I will not vote because I honestly don't think you can have the eventing without the scripting or vice versa.

Neither.

I did not vote because the poll forces you to pick either scripting or eventing.

What's best to use depends on the specific situations you are in. Sometimes a scripted solution is preferable, at other times an evented solution is preferable and at other times still a hybrid solution evolving both scripting and evented is preferable.

If you remove Interpreter from the list of scripts, events are useless. In essence, Events are merely user-friendly bits of scripts. With that said, in essence, they are one and the same; the question is, which do you prefer using?

If it is easier to use the premade script commands a.k.a. 'events' for a given situation; do it. (I used an event system for my cave in Shadows of the Forgotten.)

If a script would be more apropriate (for instance, easy-to-make menu systems, or title screen systems that look cool), create one.

When you reach the nuts and bolts, they are the same.

I'd disagree with that. What is stronger, graphite or diamond? Both are made of exactly the same stuff, just arranged differently.

If the question is which do you prefer using, the majority of us who cannot script would vote for eventing. That would mean this poll is pointless. The question is which is best. Leon, you can do both well, so what you do more with? Could you make a system from events which is more advanced than a system from scripting?

I thought it was which does one prefer. My mistake.

Which is best? No, one isn't better than the other and that's not even nitpicking the individual advantages of either in different areas. Everything comes down to personal preference and perception in all areas of life to some extent. We may as well be asking whether or not Mac is better than PC or rpgs vs. fps or RMXP vs. Game Maker or battle focused gameplay vs. quest focused gameplay or any other of these silly debates before even getting as specific as whether scripting or eventing might be intrinsically better than the other. That question has to make assumptions in all of those arguments to be valid. I mean no offense at all, I've just been getting really sick of the my app is better than your app fanboyism in regards to 3d art in other places, so I went on a little rant.

My personal preferance is for eventing. As a visual artist, I work -much- better with being able to move my mouse around and click buttons and look at variables inside fields and select from menus, so it's just far easier for me to do it that way even though my options are limited to what my buttons do. I can see how people who prefer scripting can get annoyed with trying to hunt down event instances on maps and have to scroll through menus and all though, definitely. Like I said, I just like having that visual map and menu to look through rather than everything laid out in a script.
