BAM! Arkbennett & Server

Recommended Posts

Well, I went on to Ebay.com, as I am an avid customer there.

And I found a nice Ati Radeon X1300, 256MB video card there for 36$ (S&H Included)

I needed it for Spore (BTW, get the pirated version without the DRM, don't know what it is? Google: Spore DRM)

Sadly, my power supply is a 250 Watt, the cheap ass video card requires a 350 Watt.

So I thought about it.

Instead, why don't I just build the computer from scratch with parts from Ebay? Get a bad A way for a few hundred, and jack in my Hard Drive and presto.

So what to do with my old computer? I guess I'll buy another HD for it, buy a book on servers and set up a server with my old one. Make my own website and shit. AFFILIATE RMXPU!

But I'm not gonna make a forum, just a site.

Just wanted to share my thoughts with everyone.

Ebay has alot of nice cheep stuff and having a server and a website would be a good idea but the costs to run a server is not going to be cheep.

Why would it cost money to run a sever?

I'll admit, I still don't know that much about computers.

So anything you could tell me would be helpful.

Why should it cost anything when the internet is free? If it's because of my internet connection.

Then how would I connect to the internet without an ISP?

I mean, there is a way THEY connect to the internet without charge. Soo..?

How the heck is your internet free? I want what you got.

So have you set up the sever yet? Can we access it? Perhaps you need a domain name. What's your site about? Are you going into competition with RMXP Unlimited?

Oh... if there was I way, I would have found it. But if you find a way, please tell me.

Do you live with your parents? I could start up a server easily enough because my parents pay for the internet in our home. We have unlimited bandwidth, so it wouldnt be too hard. The only thing is I would have to my computer on constantly(or maybe its my modem... one or the other) and that would stack up the electric bill.

I've never done it so you'd better not listen to anything I say, so I think you should do a bit of research on what you need to do.

How far have you actually got with the server?

Yeah, but I'm at my last year of high school, so I won't be living here for long.

Well right now I'm in the plannings.

I'm gonna get a job within the next week or so.

So it'll be atleast a month or two before I can get two computers.

In the meantime I'm gonna do some research and buy a book on web design and one related to servers and how they are set up. I don't know a lick of it. I'll admit, my plan is just ambition as of right now. Until I get the job. Then it'll snowball from their hopefully.

books on web design dont help too much... its more of a hands-on kind of thing... you jsut end up elarning one day... the best way to do so is jsut read a couple of tuts on HTML then get dreamweaver. dreamweaver basically teaches while you design. I learned CSS by writing it. it sounds frustrating but its quite easy.

Chief, doesn't Dreamweaver write the CSS code for you? I've made a website for a company in my country using dreamweaver and I don't know how to code anything and didn't need to use any code(and got payed $1600 for it).

I suppose learning to create really nice websites would be more satisfying for the creator, but I'd still go for a template. If I ever attempted to make another website, I would definitively use Joomla again.

Perhaps looking at paying for a host would be a good option? You just want to start a website right?

Thanks for the advice, I'll definately consider that. Is Dreamweaver free..?

Yes and No. I don't want to pay a host, I want to provide for myself. I find the idea of setting up your own server and such intriguing and it could be useful knowledge for future careers. So, it's mostly just to learn it, and to make my own website.

Well remember Ark, I'm always here too if you need help with something.

Thanks homie, I know you are. I'll be sure to remember.

first of all, marked, dreamweaver does not write your CSS code for you... maybe it does if you dont code anything and jsut design like a drag "n drop thing but i dont... its way more fun and "fulfilling" if you do it on your own. and, dreamweaver is not free (unless you crack it... :( ) but im sure an old verion is cheap... i got mine for free since my friend didnt use it. so, i would seriously suggest getting it since youre already spending money, whats a few more bucks?

also, once you know HTML pretty good, CSS jsut kidna works its way in... I was using just HTML for design once and it was bad... but once i added in the CSS, it was extremely easy... if you need help with HTML or CSS, i can write a couple of tuts for you.

btw, i started designing websites in notepad... yep, im teh pwnz... but that was a long time ago...

I still design all webpages I do in notepad. My teacher taught us that way, because she wanted us to learn it not cheat it. Dreamweaver is basically a cheat. It does everything for you.

Ark as far as Dreamweaver goes, contact me, you know the deal.

yeah, i would admit that dreamweaver is completely cheating but i started off in textpad and i learned it in that way... so i gained a genuine knowledge beofre i used shortcuts... cuz honestly, it jsut makes things way easier to deal with... i mean, i dont use the concept of the "Cheating" in it though. cuz i know what i should write and i do... its really helpful thouguh cuz of the spellcheck thing and the cleaness of the program... its a crap laod of help.

Hm. Well, I do know basic HTML, I read some tutorials at W3Schools - but that was for Myspace.

Guess I should brush up.

I might use dreamweaver.

Does anyone know anything about servers?

You could use Dreamweaver and you could learn html(though the two don't necessarily mix, Dreamweaver being "Cheating"), or, you could use php software.

Compare Joomla software to a site made in Dreamweaver. You may be able to get a better looking site in Dreamweaver(I mean, you could that by just having a cool background...thats photoshop), but in terms of cool effects and content management, well, Dreamweaver doesn't even have that. So I think you should consider that. It will save you a heck of a lot of time. I could have a site up in an hour(graphics and all), and I can't script a thing.

I don't know anything about servers. But I know a lot about invision power boards, joomla, databases, hosts and everything to do with creating a site such as this. I can help you out with those things. And I can help out with some traffic too, our average daily pageview count isn't too bad.

My brother works with Dreamweaver and he spends a lot of time on it, doesn't seem "cheap" to me.

Oh and Ark, Spore is awesome!

Hm. Well, I'm turning in my application today.

It all starts here.

I WISH I COULD PLAY IT!

Jokes on you though. You got haxxed by EA, that DRM (Digital Rights Manager) is going to be a permanent part of your computer.. Unless you reformat it. EA is going to court because of it.

Lol, That DRM is a joke, it can be removed, If I remember right you can find it in the Control Panel, under Add/Remove though it's not called DRM, and actually I heard if you legally bought the game the only ones they did on are the ones in California, weird huh? lol
