Skills With Side Effects

Recommended Posts

Want to make a powerful skill that will effect your character in a bad way, like Hyper Beam in Pokemon? Then let's make one. We need an Ailment, 2 Skills and a Common Event. (Why 2 skills to make 1? You'll see)

Let's make a Hyper Beam to understand a little on how to do this, ok?

Step 1: Ailment. Let's make an ailment that will paralyze you for... a few turns like 2, 1 or zero (one turn kind of if zero). Make it non-resistant, we'll add in a restriction of "Can't Move" since you're paralyzed. I'm naming our ailment "side effect" since this skill will give your character one. Here's an example of what it should look like.....

Step 2: Skill 1, Paralyze. Now that we have the ailment, let's turn it into a skill. We'll name it "Self Paralyze" for this tutorial. Costs no MP, no user/target animation, it hit's only the user and of course it's Occasion is for "Only in Battle". Once the skill is made, give it the state change side effect.

Now for the "real" skill.

Step 3: Skill 2, Hyper Beam. Since in Pokemon it's a strong skill, let's make ours strong as well. MP can be 10 (or more, your call) Power: 135, User Animation: Special Move, Target Animation: I went with "Fire 2" for an example. It hits only one enemy and it has the same Occasion as the skill in Step 2. Should look something like this.....

HyperBeam-3.jpg
Hmm, what's this? Look at the commen event slot in Hyper Beam closely.....
HyperBeam-35.jpg
That is how we paralyze ourselves with this skill. How? I'll show you.

Step 4: Common Event. This is abit hard, but here we go. I named the CE (common event for short :P) Hyper Beam Side Effect, could have named it better, but I'm feeling lazy in naming it right. There's no Trigger, no switch, just Force Action. Here's what it looks like when you have it done.....

HyperBeam-4.jpg
I'll show you how to make the Force Action in case you don't

Step 4.2: Common Event, Force Action. Ok, the Force Ation is in the 3rd tab in Event Commands.

HyperBeam-45.jpg
Force Action makes an enemy, or character, do a certain action like casting a spell, or the basics, attack, defend, do nothing, or runaway. We'll make actor 1 use Hyper Beam and attack random (since the skill has the target all set, it can be put on "random" yet hit the selected monster you want to hit) in a normal sequence. Like so......
HyperBeam-46.jpg
Now that was the force action for Hyper Beam, where's Self Paralyze? Right here. Actor1 uses the skill Self Paralyze on random (we have Self Paralyze set to only hit you, so random is good since there's only one character to hit) and timing is Execute Now!

HyperBeam-47.jpg
Congradulations! You have now made the skill Hyper Beam! Oh, don't forget to add the new skill to a character class. We'll give Fighter Class the skill so Arshes can test it out for us.

The ONE flaw with this is we made it so Actor 1 in the party can use it. If the character with the skill is not in Actor 1 for the party, the skill won't work. I'm still working on that detail. It's perfect for the main character who is always in Actor 1 for party, other teammates........... Well as long as you always get them in the right order and they stay in the same spot in the party. Now then -hehe- now then, why does this topic have this in its' description "Making skills with "deadly" side effects. *hint* *hint*"? We made a skill that paralyzes you, what if we made a skill that if you use it, it kills you once casted? Yep, a skill so powerful it kills the caster once used. Instead of paralyze make a skill and ailment with Death in them so they'd kill you. Why have a skill that can kill you? Well..... For one it makes things interesting, and also.......

What if it was for the monsters (bosses) instead of you? Think about it..................

And the sweet part is, this is like the skill Analyze. This skill, Hyper Beam, can be used in XP and VX.

I hope you all enjoy this tutorial, hopefully I can find out how to fix it's flaw. Unless someone else want to?
