Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 I'm making a cloud tutorial right now! Just give me a bit!
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 Kay ;) Is this better? I added more flowers, tall grass, dark spots of grass, made the water wider and fixed the tree's shadows. Oh, and I'm using the auto tiles you posted.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 Polraudio, the main problem with your map is the path, it needs a lot more variation. It is waaaaaaaaaay to linear. Try using the autotile I posted in the first post. Also put a few stumps near the road, and maybe add a stream of water somewhere. You also need more detail. Like add some shadow grass or something and flowers. AND PEOPLE! >,< I assume you were going to put people in there eventually. Make sure you add lots of mini quests and birds and animals like them so you can add more feeling to the map. Some clouds would do nicely there as well. Will add more life and ground detail but i cant have water its in the middle of nowhere with no water. Dont know if i need more trees. It is a town in the forest. darkcieran 1 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 well i guess i miht as well get some input on these.
zane203 8 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 ^ needs more foliage lol So does your FACE! PWNED! (jk)
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 Dark Cerian, for one, I could have sworn I posted crit for that post.... hrmmm... Well you need to use the normal grass for your main ground, and spread the shadow grass around to make it look nicer. That auto tile you used Is supposed to be used on top of auto tile 003, or you can use this one instead of 003: http://rmxpunlimited.net/forums/uploads/1235520219/gallery_2908_3_3648.png It looks much better. Once you fixed those things up, you need to move your house up a few tiles so you can connect the foyer piece with the main building. A foyer in a house is usually a small entry area or room by the front door. Other public rooms such as the living room, dining room, and family room typically attach to it, along with any main stairway. It was intended as an "airlock", separating the fireplace-heated rooms from the (colder, in winter) front entrance, where cold air infiltration made for cold drafts and low temperatures. It was used for outer garment storage for both residents and guests. I personally never use the tree auto tile, and I think you should drop it. Add some tall grass here and there, it can work wonders. And you know the individual round tall grass tile usually next to the tall grass tiles in tilesets? Well when you place that on the third layer over the edges, it gives the tall grass more variation. Same with the smaller individual piece. After adding some tall grass, figure out where you want your path to be leading, and form it from there. If you are going to use the path you used in your second map, then don't use the autotile that goes over paths. Okay, so the path, tall grass, and house have been put how you like' em. Now add a lot more foliage like zane said... even though this is MY CLASS!!! RAWR!! So yeah, add a lot to the tall grass area, and then a little less in the open area. If you do end up losing the tree auto tile then you will either have more space for a river, or a place for real trees. Its basically the same thing with your second map. Maybe make the path a little thicker in some places though.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 14, 2009 Click me because I'm an awesome link! Here is the download link for the cloud tutorial demo. I think I went overboard but I like making these :)
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted October 15, 2009 (First, how did you get that version of Another hear calls by the Chipmunks? I can't seem to buy it or get it anywhere and I love that song! >.<) Second, I understood that tut fully and I managed to make awesome clouds! Hehehe, thanks Kiriashi. That adds onto my map skills a bit :) Also, I'm not sure if you said anything about it or not, so I'll ask again ;P http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac20/MagitekElite/Help/Better.png I add more things to it; tall grass, flowers, widen the water, darkened some grass, fixed the shadows to the trees and changed the autotile to the one you supplied. Is it better than the last one?
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 15, 2009 The song was the normal song (Grab it from the Audio folder in that project if ya' want), I just turned the pitch all the way up when importing it. :P As for your map... Grrr... it seems I did skip right over it. Here is some critique: The red highlighted areas are where things are overused. For example, those flowers need to be spread around the map a little more. The black areas just point to all of your undulation tiles, which I think are ugly. You might wanna switch out that tile for the flower auto-tile, it works nicely with the little yellow tiles over it. The blue highlighted area is where the water looks weird. Make it a little more round. The indigo area NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE BLUE is where you've got a water auto-tile error. Add one splotch of water below it. You might consider re-doing the water area, making go in a slightly more linear way whilst heading south. The lower river area should be dropped completely. The burnt up areas (the shiny things) are things you should get rid of. The green line is where your trees should be more spread out, considering you follow the following advice: You need to give purpose to this map. Define what it needs to do. Does it lead the player somewhere? If so, then make a path on the map. THEN edit the trees with the green line to be along side the path, with maybe a few stumps. Use the path auto-tile I specified earlier. Lastly, noting that I said "Where is the tall grass, I no see!" in lolcat grammar, you neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to give this map tall grass. Check out this map: See in the bottom left? There is tall grass. When you are done making the tall grass, add those other things i told to take out. They look like little splotches of the tall grass. they go on the third layer. That's how you accomplish the variation in grass. K hun? That's about it! Excuse my tardiness in posting critique, a'ight matie?
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted October 15, 2009 I can't see your images :<

CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted October 15, 2009 Tried it, didn't work. You should just post the url of it so I may click it and see ^^ Also, does anyone have the autotile for the tall grass?
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 16, 2009 Yup, here it is: http://rmxpunlimited.net/forums/uploads/1176045751/gallery_1_3_9596.png And as for the image links, here: Image One Will get later, it is on a hard drive not in my compy :L Image Two http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/959/woods.png
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted October 16, 2009 Thanks for it, Kiriashi. Okay, I'll check back later then. :)
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 18, 2009 I re uploaded them all, can you see em' now?
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted October 18, 2009 Nope, says "Posted Image". :( Come to think of it, your sig just has the url of images. >.>
Hughesy 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2009 Updated from the last version. There is a rain effect and screen tint.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted November 13, 2009 The first thing to get cracking at is the blue areas. These areas are where you used to much of the same tile at once. If ya' spruce things up a little bit, and place those fern tiles in different areas of the map, it'll look great! Next is the red highlighted areas. This is where poor little tiles get misplaced! lol The stumps shouldn't be in there, because it's a thick forest. The roots are not close enough to trees. Now weeee have ze green. This is where you got a case of symmetry-miosis. Noctice how your only two trees are lined up perfectly, as well as the fallen leaves, water designs, and almost, your lily pads. The burnt areas are where you need more detail, or rather, a bit more purpose. A more well defined path would do you good. Maybe make the water connect on both north and south of your map, and create a bridge. Maybe the bridge is broken, and you need someone to repair it. Something like this will bring more attending to the center of your map.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 Anyone else have any more maps to post? Let's see who can use the snow tileset!
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 You know, not even by "quoting" was I allowed to see those images...and I still can't :( But anyway, I wanna know if I have what it takes to be a fairly good mapper:
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 I've uploaded the pictures for you, hopefully this will work. I have no clue why you aren't able to view them... As for your mountain map: Why are those black lines there? Your rockies looks a little too squarish. Add some more variety, and the entire map will look better. Are you using a normal tileset? The shadows for some of the trees look odd. You need to make sure that you right click shadows when importing tilesets. Use the path and dirt autotiles in random splotches (more random with the dirt), and use the pebble tiles too. And get rid of the stump at the lowest elevation unless you make a path there. Why would someone cut a tree there? The circle and line grass tiles look really good when you put them on the edge of the tall grass. Also, a little more vegetation wouldn't hurt. That's all I have to say for now, but I will try to make some actual edits for your map. Good job Crimson, keep it up!
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 Oh, in game I couldn't take a snap shot of all the map, so I thought this way would be better. I'll do it the other way from now on ^.^ Thanks for the link tot he pictures, but the only working image in it, is someone else's map >.> Maybe a url would work? Yup, the normal one. Or at least I think it is. The odd thing is, a few of my autotiles don't work. Mostly my water and grass ones... How would I improve my rocks? Any details? ;D I'll fix it as best as I can...but I hope you didn't post a image, 'cause I see nothing :(
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 No, I did not post an image in the previous post. What operating system and web browser are you using BTW? So you're saying that you can only see my example map? You can see the corrections map? ;( EDIT: I think I know why, I'll fix it ASAP.
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 Vistia, home basic. And Monzilla. IE doesn't load on my slow computer lol Yea, I only saw the map with the dead/asleep guy ^.^ EDIT: New maps? Hopefully these are better.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 I'll get back to you on this tomorrow with an example map. I don't have RMXP on this compy. ;(
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted February 21, 2010 Okay, I'll wait. :)
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted February 24, 2010 Sorry for taking forever. I made the map, and then forgot about it.
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted February 24, 2010 *drools* You're so good at mapping! Jeez >.< It makes me want to play around in that map T.T I'll start on another map! But I got a few questions, how did you get good at this? Practice, or did you already have the talent? (< Was just a awed question really) How did you make it look later (the tint)? What settings did you use, because that's really good. And what is that little green thing in the thin waterfall? Also...exactly what do the layers of the editor do? I know the event one >.< (^ that must be a stupid sounding question to you...)
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted February 24, 2010 There was a butterfly over the waterfall. That's the green thing. How I get perfect tint settings is with an awesome script from my good friend Leon. Let me see if I can get permission to give it to you. Basically it let's you change the tint in game by pressing F8. You can play around with it until you find what you like, then you record the values and make an event that changes the screen tone to said values. How did I get to where I am? Well I practiced a lot, obviously. I gave up on all my projects to practice mapping for like two months, and I looked through every single map gallery I could find, which there are a lot of. :king: Then I tried using everyone's tips and tried copying their maps.. and well.. That's about it. You just have to listen to the professionals so that you can become one. And no, I had no real experience for this before. I do 3d mapping, but that is a LOT different from RMXP mapping. My first maps sucked. A lot. EDIT: Turn out it is public: Here is the script.
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted February 24, 2010 I thought it was a butterfly, I wasn't completely sure though. That's what I hear from everyone, look at others work. But I can hardly find other mappers or mapping tutorials/galleries. This seems to be the only place :D A script did that? I didn't think they could add tints and stuff like that ^.^ Oh, thank you for the script link C: My grass seems to come out weird everytime I place it down. I can walk through it like grass, but something seems off about it. I checked the properties and they are set right...but I dunno, maybe I'm crazy.
