Linux.

Kept me clear of viruses for a long time until I switch to Vista to use my drawing Tablet >

I'm a writer and a artist and Linux couldn't support the genius tablet at the time >.>

If I had the disc, I'd re-install it since it's the best operating system ever created, plus they use a penguin for their buttons lol

Windows XP on my computer and Vista on the laptop. Haven't honestly tried either Linux or Mac, but Windows is the most one I am familiar with.

With Linux, I can say I never had a virus, unless you go searching for the ultimate virus known to man, but I never once had to clean my system from anything like that.

Had to on Vista lots of times.

I haven't tried Mac *sigh* I bet its better than windows.

Well I'm a VB.net programmer, so i'm limited to windows. Wine/Mono don't emulate my programs cause they are to sophisticated....idk.

Hm, Wine worked so well for me when I was on Linux. I even helped moderators from time to time lol

Windows is like having a three year old, one you have to hold the hand to every time it gets scared (from a virus) and sooth it when it's having a malfunction.

Linux is like the proud lion, well, more like the brave penguin that journeys across the endless seas of viruses, shielding himself with his wings and being smart enough to try.

lol

You suck windows and I can't believe you've made so much money on your crap. People only use it cause of the games it can play > Oblivion and Star Wars.

Here's my idea of Windows.

Windows is like a child. If you be mean to it and yell at it, or get it sick, it's gonna hate you. But if you keep it clean (No viruses), are nice to it (no keyboard smashing, yelling at PC, smashing power button...it can sense anger), and occasionally give it treats (deleting crap, optimizing registry), It'll chirp right along happily as can be.

Hm, your windows seems different than the rest of them lol

alien hardware! Get formlesstree4!

I don't know about you, but I treat my windows nicely, even clean it up everyday, update it's expensive anti-virus software and everything. Still treats me like crap.

Don't be mean to me because my Windows is nice to me!

Okay, fine. But I still think you have alien software...could ya share? ;D

I'm surprised that not a lot of people said Macintosh. The commercials must have been a lie. No one wanted it lol

Note: Windows, you are only good for video games and video players lol

I like Windows, don't really like the Mac much, and what's a Linux?

>.>

Huh.

Look here for Linux if you're serious. Its like a mega windows on crack, but its completely free and you NEVER get viruses, unless you're brewing some of your own and is gonna test it out on your own computer lol.

Here some info on it as well. Its an operating system created by a young student (well, young than :}).

Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Linus had an interest in Minix, a small UNIX system, and decided to develop a system that exceeded the Minix standards. He began his work in 1991 when he released version 0.02 and worked steadily until 1994 when version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel was released. The kernel, at the heart of all Linux systems, is developed and released under the GNU General Public License and its source code is freely available to everyone. It is this kernel that forms the base around which a Linux operating system is developed. There are now literally hundreds of companies and organizations and an equal number of individuals that have released their own versions of operating systems based on the Linux kernel. More information on the kernel can be found at our sister site, LinuxHQ and at the official Linux Kernel Archives. The current full-featured version is 2.6 (released December 2003) and development continues.

Apart from the fact that it's freely distributed, Linux's functionality, adaptability and robustness, has made it the main alternative for proprietary Unix and Microsoft operating systems. IBM, Hewlett-Packard and other giants of the computing world have embraced Linux and support its ongoing development. Well into its second decade of existence, Linux has been adopted worldwide primarily as a server platform. Its use as a home and office desktop operating system is also on the rise. The operating system can also be incorporated directly into microchips in a process called "embedding" and is increasingly being used this way in appliances and devices.

Throughout most of the 1990's, tech pundits, largely unaware of Linux's potential, dismissed it as a computer hobbyist project, unsuitable for the general public's computing needs. Through the efforts of developers of desktop management systems such as KDE and GNOME, office suite project OpenOffice.org and the Mozilla web browser project, to name only a few, there are now a wide range of applications that run on Linux and it can be used by anyone regardless of his/her knowledge of computers. Those curious to see the capabilities of Linux can download a live CD version called Knoppix . It comes with everything you might need to carry out day-to-day tasks on the computer and it needs no installation. It will run from a CD in a computer capable of booting from the CD drive. Those choosing to continue using Linux can find a variety of versions or "distributions" of Linux that are easy to install, configure and use. Information on these products is available in our distribution section and can be found by selecting the mainstream/general public category.

A whole lot better than Windows and Mac, although I've never used Mac :S

In only certain aspects.

Only in certain aspects? What ever do you mean? If you wanted to run a Windows program, use Wine. Linux is basically the god to computers.

Tell me what I'm missing and I'm sure there is always something Linux has that outshines its badness or maybe even has a program that fixes it.

Wine is not a perfect emulation. If they can perfect Wine and/or Mono and create a great IDE for VB.net, then I would migrate to Linux. Until then, I stick with Windows due to full gaming compatibility and ease of programming.

I understand the gaming need, but did you know their is a game creating software for free on Linux called Crystal Space? I never got around to using it because I was having so much fun not getting problems I'd normally have in Windows...oh, and writing my novel.

Yes, Wine isn't complete, but it is getting more and more stable with every release. Lets see your Windows due something like that for free and with so much spark in it. Windows is cheap, useless and a waste of money. Why do that when you can have Linux?

Huh, I guess I'm just a Linux freak...although I like to be called a Ubunter. lol

Windows is cheap, useless and a waste of money.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold it there man. Don't start bashing. I do not recall me bashing Linux. Most stuff works on Windows better because it has easier to use programming languages. Microsoft is the cheap part here, and Windows 7 (The new one) is quite the opposite of what you say Windows is. Even XP is very good, unless you are being stupid and get it virus infected.

Virtual PC. If you know what you're doing can easily emulate most OS's (See here for Linux howto, and also Cygwin.)

Why do that when you can have Linux?

Because most software runs on Windows, and Linux is more used for servers if you think about it.

We all have our own opinions about Operating Systems. I have dabbled in Ubuntu and enjoyed it, but missed some Windows features.

Yeah, I own XP and it works great (besides the lockups and stuff but that has something to do with the computer itself...its old, lol), I mainly use the computer for gaming and it can handle games pretty well. Like formless said everyone has their own opinions but don't bash other things please Crimson....:(

Okay, okay. Sorry, I didn't mean to bash. I just don't like windows, its failed so many times. But, Linux uses an easier language than Windows, children at the age of 7-10 can learn to build things from it, I built my own OpenOffice like program at the age of 12, when I was introduced to it.

Yes, Windows is good for running games and some other neat programs. But in all (In my opinion) I think Linux is better. The new release doesn't have much changed to it and other big fans of Windows said the same at E3.

Aye, I too enjoyed Ubuntu and missed Windows programs. I made the hard switch between the two to use my Genius Tablet.

Windows...XP. Why? Because it's superior Vista is horrible.

Macs are good for working with things like Adobe. basically work. And making games.

Windows is for games, making games, and work.

Linux..is...for...not catching viruses? I never used Linux so I don't know it's capabilities.

Not just for viruses, but for many other things. Its good with coloring programs (Adobe, Photoshop, Gimp, Corel Painter and more)more things, more things and the virus protection is just a super add on that helps you a lot.

See, windows made their computers able to die so quickly from viruses and hacks and computer faults so you have to go out and buy another Vista, XP and 7 because you can only use each twice. Other wise, you must go buy another. Linux is just awesome-y-er than Windows.

I love Linux :P :B):
