Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 *Warning On In-Polite Language Inside* I quite frankly for one am tired of the word noob and any other forms of it. I'm sick of people calling people noobs. I'm sick and t ired of people calling themselves noobs. I'm sorry but this shit is really pissing me off. Why the fuck do people feel the need to call others noob. Or even fucking worse, why call yourself a noob. Like I can't even express how pissed it makes me. What is your view on this word?
solshadow 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 Ehh....its a by product of today's technology based society as well as America's ever changing use of English. I personally dislike the fact that now gamer talk and 1337 speak is common space on the streets but...what can ya do, ya know? Kinda like how people say, "Oh, I'ma Google you". I still say nublet and noob because I've been using it since I first started playing online fps games with others which was..... roughly 99'-00' and I was 7-8 then. I feel its the same with supposed "curse" words. Fuck, shit asshole are just adjectives and interjections to me.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 I agree with you wyz. I hate when people call them self's noobs or others. If your a noob keep it to you own damn self cause no one cares and if you know someone is once again keep it to your own damn self. Its a pointless word that should never be said. Blackbound 4 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 If I am new at something, I do call myself "Noob" or "Novice" sometimes. I use it in its context, without really insulting myself. I have no problems when its used correctly. Its when its not used correctly that its annoying for me.
solshadow 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 ....OMFG!!!!! I CAN NO LONGER USE THE WORD NUB!!!!!! Like 5 secs ago i was channel surfing and went past nick....iCarly was on and I heard them use the word nub......omg....Nick has ruined my childhood.....first by taking off those great kids shows and now this..... Sorry for that rant lol but its true
Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Using the word Novice Blackbound is for better then the word noob. Noob to me is like when your a kid and you shout at your friends "Your mom" or "your face" or something along those lines.
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 I hate the word too. But it's the only word others can really relate to being "new" at something. When they (I've called myself it three times so dumb people wouldn't have to correct me and say "your a newb or however you spell it). I think it's disrespectful and hurtful. I was reading some new threads on another forum, when I spotted one I thought I could help on. I clicked it and a mod was disrespecting the poor 13 year old boy. The boy asked for respect and the mod said he didn't give respect to newbs who can't read the F'ing help file that comes with the RPG maker (side note, the kid stated it didn't come with one, but the mod refused to read THAT part) He made the kid leave and than he removed the kid's account. I was so close to posting something there, just to shut the guy up, but I didn't because fighting doesn't solve anything. Anyway, how does anyone ever get good at something without being a "newb". I don't think they thought about that, because they are dumb people. It's a little okay when you're playing around with friends or people you know, like saying this to your brother who just lost on a Mario game. "Hehe, you're so a newb. Want me to help you a little?" in a teasing voice it's okay, but you can't tease or play around on the internet because you can't hear their voice. Only when you get to know someone, only than do you know if they are playing around. Now, since I'm home-schooled, I've never had the unfortunate event of hearing someone else call some kid a newb, or I would have to explain my theory about being new at something. Well, that's all...wow, this was a big rant. Wyzrd, you seem very smart and understanding person if you've posted a thread like this. You rock.

It takes nerve really, or at least it would on the other RPG sites. They love that word so much.
Marked 197 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Wyz, did this come on because of that introduction topic? I had that thought reading this topic, before I saw your post in it. The only reason I said noob, well, I was just quoting him. It's probably the first time I've ever written it in a post. Whenever I see a member refer to themselves as a noob I get the impression they are perhaps somehow immature or really young, its just the impression I get. It really doesn't do them any favors, in my view. But it's not like can really stop members from posting it. Then again you dont often see the active members who contribute in terms of quality posts using it... I don't see it as CrimsonInferno said, "the only word others can really relate to being "new" at something", it sounds like more of an insult when I read it in posts. But that's just me, and I dont go a whole lot of forums.

But that's just me, and I dont go a whole lot of forums. That's what I meant. The people who call others "noob" can't think of anything, so they insult them by saying they are new to whatever it is. Which as I said, doesn't make sense because EVERYONE is a "noob" at some point. The people who use that word sound idiotic. And that person isn't worth talking to at all. I'm saying its wrong. Some times I see people saying "hey, I'm a noob. Help me." and others would say this: "Hello, I'm new to ??(Insert whatever it is). Could someone please spare some advice or help?" That's the correct way, or at least it is to me. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm very tired and I'm waiting for my computer to update before I shut her down >.<
Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Yes Marked, the introduction topics and other post I have seen around on this forum in other places. As Crimson just said I would prefer someone saying "I'm new and request help." VS. them saying "I'm a noob so i need help now." That makes me feel they have no confidence in themselves and their abilities so they put themselves down. I know at times I say "I can't do this" but I would never say I'm a noob. I struggle with RMXP, I'm not that great but I wouldn't go as far as calling myself a noob. Fuck that.

I struggle with RMXP, I'm not that great but I wouldn't go as far as calling myself a noob. Fuck that. Indeed, Wyzrd, indeed. It kinda makes me feel bad for them, for degrading themselves just so people can help them, and even then, people still treat them like trash. If I was an all-mighty god at RPG game makers (all) I'd be tossing help all over the place, even to old threads and to shadows on the internet. Because that's what a nice person does, they try to help people in need. Even when I'm in a grumpy mood, I still help people on others things, like game advice or where to find things. I like how it feels when I help people. Makes me smile :>
Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Someone using the word noob and dumbing themselves down actually turns me away from helping them. Where as, as you just said, for the most part I try to help where and when I can if I know how to.
Blackbound 4 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Novice is actually a good replacement for the word noob. I think more people would read a topic titled "Novice at RPGmaker XP, can someone help me please?" than "Noob@rmxp.need help now"
Leon 55 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 -shakes head slowly- noob has become a word to show that you have no skill at something, and thus, people won't respect you at it. What I don't get is WHY someone would call themselves such. To demean yourself for assistance; rather than seek someone out actively. I suppose it is laziness. This reminds me of 2 years ago, before I started scripting... -eyes glaze over, and a sienna-grayscale flashback appears- At creation asylum, a few people would help. Jimmie, and a couple others. Some wouldn't. BUt I still wasn't getting the assistance I needed. Then I found Tiberius. He had his own site, and you talk about good help there. Too bad ES is no more. I've even been trying to get Tib to return to RMXP. BUt not ONCE did they call me noob there, and they showed respect. Sorry, sentimental memories. Hell, Wyz remembers Tib. And Ark was around then, too. Anyway, this is why I always giv Cred's to Tiberius_XXVIII. He was my scripting mentor. He taught me the basics and from there, I learned more. Hell, I ought to show you the script he inspired me to create. Maybe i'll revamp it and make a game off of it... Anyway, the attack of the gummi bears is amusing, especially the revenge. BUt to use noob in a NEGATIVE mannor, well... why would anyone want to? It is another way of saying inexperienced user. And everyone is a novice atleast once a month. Get used to it. Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted July 21, 2009 Yes, remembers ES with a dry taste in my mouth. Tib and a few other peoples were cool but other then that blah. Has it really only been 2 years ago Leon?

rgangsta 43 Report post Posted July 22, 2009 Where does the word noo/nub/newb/newbie etc. even come from?! What I really hate is when I play against someone who is a higher level than me, and when I defeat them, they call me a noob. So I say "You just got pwned by a noob. What does that make you?" Once a guy left after I wrote that. Kids these days. .:EDIT:. I just Googled it and it turns out that it came from some British talk "new boy"....I'm going to play Gunz. I hve to take out my rage on those idiots.

Enigma 10 Report post Posted July 24, 2009 i think the word nub/noob/newb/nab/nuub is funny Honestly, people call themselve a newb for two reasons, one they aren't confident in there abilities and two they are somewhat ignorant of its conotation and aren't aware of alternatives Its the same way with the word Nigga, nigger. It originated as an insult, but now many black men use it constantly.
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted July 24, 2009 Yeah, I agree for the most part, I don't use the word in RL. And I don't call people n00bs, I just use it as easy reference in a conversation. And I think it's okay when people call themselves a newb, just not a n00b. That's dumb. Your insulting yourself.

Xetjsin 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2009 I know on occasion, I have called myself a "noob" (I did so in my introduction thread here, actually) but, the way I use it, is more like saying "I really have no idea what so ever as to what I am doing" moreso than an insult or degrading myself. I may have a glimmer of talent, and extreme dedication to do something, but with absolutely zero knowledge in said category, is when I would title myself "noob". In this context, I don't view it so much as an insult, but a decent classifying of your skill level. Seeing how much it bothers people on here, I would gladly substitute it, since I do want to form friendships and a level of respect amongst you all, and so I'm actually sorry for saying it at all. as for people calling others "noobs" I think it just shows their level of inadequacy with whatever it is, be it online gaming or whatever, and their need to elevate themselves over others. Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted July 24, 2009 I understand what you are saying. Not trying to disrespect you in anyway. But wouldn't the word Novice suffice for basically the same thing as noob. Novice means "A novice is anyone new to a particular field or activity, but the term can also refer to a person who has entered into a religious order but has still to take final vows. " So being new to the field would be saying basically you know nothing. It seems more proper and professional then so called "noob."

When you first start off on these forums (and six others I have found), you're known as "Newbie". So the whole forum calls you a "Newb". I kinda think it should be replaced with Novice or beginner, I like them a whole lot more. People shouldn't have to insult themselves or let others do that. Its wrong. Which is why I never call anyone a newb. But my brother does on Halo every single day. Its annoying. Don't call yourself noob!
