Woman accused of baby murder 'ate brain'

I've spoilered this article because it is, well, rather disturbing. I'll warn you now, younger members, don't read this. I had thought twice whether to post this or not, but it was so shocking I decided to post it. The point of posting it, and this forum, is for discussion about what's going on in the world.

A woman charged with murdering her three-and-a-half-week-old son used a knife and two swords to dismember the child and ate parts of his body, including his brain, before stabbing herself in the torso and slicing her own throat, police say.

 

Otty Sanchez, 33, is charged with capital murder in the death of her infant son, Scott Wesley Buchholtz-Sanchez. She was recovering from her wounds at a hospital, and was being held on $US1 million ($A1.22 million) bail.

 

San Antonio police chief William McManus said the attack early on Sunday morning occurred a week after the child's father moved out. The child's aunt and two cousins, ages five and seven, were in the house, but none were harmed.

 

McManus, who appeared uncomfortable as he addressed reporters on Monday, said Sanchez apparently ate the child's brain and some other body parts.

 

She also tore his face off, chewed off three of his toes and decapitated the infant before stabbing herself.

 

"It's too heinous for me to describe it any further," McManus said.

 

Officers called to Sanchez's house at about 5am on Sunday found her sitting on the couch "screaming that she killed her baby," police spokesman Joe Rios said.

 

They found the boy's body in a bedroom.

 

Police said Sanchez said the devil told her to kill her son.

 

"It was a spontaneous utterance," McManus said. "She said she was hearing voices."

 

Sanchez does not yet have a lawyer, police said, and was hospitalised in San Antonio. The police declined to identify other family members.

 

Neighbour Luis Yanez said everyone on the street was appalled by the news.

 

"Why would you do that to your baby?" said Yanez, 23, a tyre technician. "It brings chills to you. They can't defend themselves."

Dear Lord, I really wish I hadn't read this....she must have had some persuasive voices to do that to her baby! Marked, I'd recommend a slightly larger warning, because I kind of blew it off when I read it.....I really regret that now.

 

That poor family...and that poor kid! She needs to be in a mental hospital, and soon.

That was really sick. What kind of women, let alone a mother, would do that to her baby boy! Or any babies! What the hell was going on in her messed up head?

 

She shouldn't even get any kind of bail, just 600 years in prison.

According to scientific fact and the theory of how Homo sapiens have evolved, the reason we are so intelligent now is because your (our) ancestors ate each others (and other animals) brains right? The amount of protein contained in it helped out with their metabolism which assisted in helping them to survive and hunt and do stuff. Eating brains will probably be the only way to evolve further and actually imporve in both mental and physical aspects. (IM TOTALLY NOT SAYING SHE WAS IN THE RIGHT)

Me and my friends talk about philosophical stuff alot (i.e. religion, big bang, evolution, space, aliens)

I've unspoilered your post in the quote, I'm hoping it won't offend anyone, evolution is just a theory like any other. So when I state something, assume that "the theory of evolution states" is written before it. I learned a bit about it last year. You say that they evolved into Homo sapiens because they were able to survive. The fact that it was a brain or a human brain has nothing to do with it, apart from it allowed tribes of them to survive when there was a lack of food. It may have provided a lot of nutrients, but it didn't increase intelligence or cause them to evolve. Evolution did increase our intelligence, and humans only evolve when mutations occur(beneficial and neutral mutations get passed on through generations, negative mutations don't). So cannibalism would have been necessary to survive, but it was the survival which eventually lead to evolution which increased our intelligence.

 

I saw a recent documentary where a scientist discovered there was a mutation in the jaw of a hominid(all the forms humans are said to have evolved from), the mutation put less pressure from them muscle on the skull allowing for the brain capacity or something to increase. As I said before, if the mutation is beneficial, it is passed on to the next generation.

 

I read something else that said that they found a new way to date skeletons of hominids, one was found to be 200,000 years earlier than originally thought. It makes theories of evolution seem a lot more ambiguous. I imagine there will be a lot more theories to come about as technology and [if] more skeletons of hominids are found.
