[XP/Vista/W7]Tutorial: Disabling Useless Startup Programs

Recommended Posts

Does your computer take forever to start up?

Well look no further this tutorial will teach you what you need to know to stop them annoying programs from starting up.

Note: Some viruses act as a startup program so its a good idea to check.

Alright lets start with the most basic tutorial ever.

Step 1:

Press the power button to start your computer

Step 2:

Wait forever for your computer to startup.

Step 3:

Once your computer starts up open up run.

You can do this by clicking start and clicking on it or by going here.

Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> Run

Step 4:

Type in the run box msconfig then click OK

msconfig001.png

Step 5:

Once you click on OK you will get a screen and click the Startup tab.

msconfig002.png

1: This shows what program is starting up once you logon to your computer

2: This shows what command is used once you logon. This usually shows the location of the .exe file.

Now on to disabling useless stuff.

As you can see i have lots of useless stuff that comes on when my computer is turned on.

Lets see what i dont need here.

I dont use stupid Microsoft Groove - Disables

I hate itunes - Disables

Dont use Quicktime - Disables

Thats all thats on the image. I have lots more but you get the idea.

Note: about 95% of the items that show on the list you don't need to have startup.

If you have any questions on what can and cannot be disabled please post a screenshot and i will let you know.

Please comment on how i did also and if this helped.

If you would like to request a tutorial Please PM me.

Yay, this can be useful for my really slow Dell computer :) I'll try this once I'm able to. I'd just usually press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end a few things on the "Processes" list.

Dells are horrible. My friend's Dell always has some sort of problem and I always have to fix it.

Yep, Dells suck. But it's the only computer I have that lets me play my MMORPGs since the one I'm using now can't :( So I have to deal with it being slow, even though playing one of the MMORPGs might make it.... I think the word is "crash", since I can't run that many things at once.

I wouldnt completely say that. I use a dell.

Dell's are mainly for people that know how to be there own computer mechanic. Dells have more potential.

Back on topic about the tutorial. Make a new topic to continue the discussion about brands.

I personally disagree with the Dell statement. I think it really depends on the users. As for any other computer or operating system or whatever. Sometimes it is the system, but a lot of times its the users. My grandpa owns a dell computer, never messes up. Always runs perfect and he's always playing games on it.

But on topic, this is a good tutorial Pol. Sure I've already knew this forever but a lot of people don't know it. I might post a tutorial that will help with something else in a few.
