as you may notice in games now days they are getting away from the whole world map idea. No offense to FF players when i say this but the games are getting more stupid from 10 and up. I personally like any of the games before 10 because it had a world map and allowed you do do a lot more with your game. Makes it feel bigger.

What do you think about world maps in general for RM games and other games?

I think world maps not only make the game better and more fun, but also, if you can unlock certain fast-travel locations by going to them in-game, or more of the map shows as you visit the places, it makes the game that much better (sorta like the past 2 Elder Scrolls games, Oblivion and Morrowind). Although, the idea of fast-travel locations can also be a bad thing (Oblivion, for example, had waaaay to many you could use right from the start). If used in moderation, these can greatly improve a game.

Also, Oreo = good

Well I think that world maps are generally a good idea. They allow you to see what the world of the game actually looks like.

However they can also be considered cheap in a way. You may find yourself moving too quickly because of it.

And I like pie better...

World Maps are ok for some games. I do like some of the PS2 games from NIS America that I have where it has World Maps. I guess it depends on the theme of the game really. Some games are good with World Maps, some don't really need one. I say try adding a World Map and see if it helps the game or not.

Also, Oreos = very good :P

It all really depends on how the world map is used. Like ShinyToyGuns said, if you have to many places open at the start, then the world map sucks (No offense ment, but thats how I understood that part). The world map should be used to see the world you are playing and, if possible, will hold entrances to dungeon maps instead of going right to the locations it says you can go into.

Why does the poll say taste the rainbow? That is the skittles slogo...

Because they need to make Oreo Skittles!

well actually, I personaly dislike the world map... I mean its not bad, but I'd rather actually travel the long distance if possible, in a non annoying way lol.

now the world map for flying a ship sure, but as for going from town to town, I like to view scenery... Its just cause im a whore for good grahpical areas =3

I personally like Over/Hub Worlds rather then World Maps. Hub Worlds allow you to explore more and sometimes power-ups and items are hidden around, and maybe some puzzle-solving in between. If they so desperately need a map of their world they can just make a map somewhere, item, library article, or whatever. I guess I just get this from my nostalgic days of playing Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie.

I'm in general dislike of world maps, mainly those that feature random encounters, because it has less of an exploration feel

I mean a world map where you travel from area to area would be awesome, instead of walking from town to town. That way you get immersed more into the whole world, rather than the towns and a single world map. Plus, an area to area system in a world map is advantageous cause it allows, one to find hidden items and fight in real time, monsters you can actually see, an ambush is k but not when ur screen keeps cracking every 5 seconds to go into battle.

Personally, I would LOVE to see a map like this somehow made for RMXP (possibly RMVX as well)...

It's just a map that you can bring up in-game (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion), and when you stumble across new locations while playing, they appear on your map as "Fast-Travel" locations (all cities are already made fast-travel from the start), meaning you can travel to the location by activating it on your map...now, I don't know if this is even possible with RPG Maker, but I think it would be pretty cool to have something like it :)

Oblivion dont have an actual world map. By world map we mean by the old Final Fantasy's and, Crono Trigger, and Wild Arms. The way they do things.

World maps make the game feel like your getting somewhere. You dont want to have like 40 maps to get to one town. That would make the player feel like they are not making any progress in the game or when a quest leads you to another town they will say "This is very stupid i just spent 40min getting here and now i have to waste another 40min go back!!!!" The point im trying to get across is that you can make your games more bigger by having a world map instead of making them feel like they got nowhere in 40min or making them feel like OMG there was 2 maps to get to the other city how lame. Sure people say the world map is a lazy way but in actuality its not. its a more creative way to make the game and get a feel for what your world is like.

Sorry for all the reading. I only do this when im making points.

You know what, this is a pretty damn good point. I never thought of it like that. Hrmm....

Now maybe I'll re-think the way I'm making my game...

I say yes to world maps.

For the record ... I am a supporter of Arevulopapu's World Map script. (probably got his name wrong)

I really dont like world maps to be honest, begining some game with a world map just makes me confused.

I think that a thing like a world map should be unlocked later in the game, or that you start with some kind of map where you unlock new areas as you enter them (pretty much like in World of warcraft)
