My computer...

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on getting Windows 7 soon, but that's for later seeing how I'm going to be needing more money than I thought, so I'm going to focus on something else for a bit. My computer is mainly used for gaming, I have Spore, Sins of a Solar Empire, and the Orange Box.

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+

2.4 GHz (speed)

2.00GB of RAM

GeForce 7600 GS

Dunno what else to put here, lol. But yeah, good enough...I want to make my computer a gaming powerhouse, make the world have a power surge every time I boot it up. XD

Gotta check video RAM, I know its fine to run Windows 7, I'm doing the upgrading for my games actually. (Portal and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 runs a little choppy) But I'll post video RAM soon tonight, when I get back home from class.:P

I bought spore and the expansion and never really liked it for some reason...

Good luck on your computer. ^_^

....Yeah I know that already Pol, lol. I'm wanting 7 anyways because I heard great things about it. I'm wanting to fix the choppiness in some of my games so I'm trying to figure out what I should upgrade first (besides the OS). How do you figure out what your video RAM is anyways?

@Kiriashi: Never really bothered with that Galactic Adventure thing anyways, I just have Spore and this "Creepy and Cute Parts Pack". I enjoy the game.:P

If you can run spore on medium quality perfectly you must have at least 128mb.

Go here and download this tool. It will tell you how much you have. infact it will tell you everything about your computer that you might not have known.

Video RAM is basically its memory size right? Well THAT is at 512MB.

This stinks....30-Day Trial, lol...oh well, now that I think about it I think my dad gave me something similar that's free...Anyways yeah, 512MB.:P

Wow that's very good it could also be that some of it comes from shared but 512mb sounds normal without it begin shared. don't see why games are choppy for you. unless your trying to run them with to high of graphics. Try changing the graphics lower.

I have 64mb video ram and i can run spore on med. but then again i have 4gb of ram and 324mb of its shared with video.

Probably my processor speed, the recommended speed for Portal/Episode 3 is 3.0GHz anyways. (I think around there)

Well I'm just trying to find something to aim for first, if you think I should go for something else instead let me know. :P

Frankly, with your performance you this crap Windows 7 is not needed. Put a good XP SP3 in your PC - and this is right.

If you had more than 4 gigabytes of RAM, then it could be put Windows 7. And so - kick to hell this glitch.

well everyone has their own opinions, I'm going to get 7 just for the heck of it...heard that it's a lot better than XP. I already have SP3 anyways. RAM I'm not sure if that's the problem, 2GB I bleieve is more than enough to run the games I have, especially Sins.

(and have you seen my resource request thread yet? I added a few new requests...)

Do not believe rumors. I have seen Windows 7 - the same horror as Windows Vista. You retard the development of times. Also, if you have less than 512 MB Video Ram, it is all you choke.

My advice - if you have XP SP3 - leave it in place and do not bother about any novelty. Sometimes the new is much worse than the old.

Well i would have to disagree. Windows 7 is Vista done the way it should have been done with lots of added stuff to make it more efficient and user friendly. I used every OS known to man and tested them thoroughly. I say Windows 7 is the best out of all of them. The OS piratically takes care of its self and lets you know exactly whats wrong and how to fix it.

Sorry to say this but i do fix computers for a living :D .

If I did not see with my own eyes, that makes Windows 7 with old computers - would not have said. However, I clearly saw the bugs of Windows 7.

After three or four months it will start works bad for the full, while a good XP SP3 could last year.

You must have had the beta or RC. Im using the retail version and i have had no errors or any problems.

They did lots of of fixing from the RC.

Vista has horrible RAM handling, and will KILL your computer if you have less than 2 GB ram

Win 7 has BEAUTIFUL RAM handling, and will run even on something as weak as: 1GHZ proccessor, 512 MB Ram, and you can even tone down your videocard all the way to 32 MB and it could run fine. (but don't quote me word for word here)

Ive seen windows 7, I can honestly say it handels EVERYTHING I TRIED far BETTER than WINDOWS XP

I currently run two systems, one with dual booting.

The Dualboot has two operating systems: Windows XP SP2, and Windows 7 Ultimate (Retail).

I did a timed check on start up times. The XP one took 30 seconds while Windows 7 took a little more than 15.

I run a system with the following stats:

CPU: 3.0GHZ Dual Processor Pentium 4

RAM: 1GB (1,023MB according to Windows 7)

Hard Drive: I have two. 1) 130GB, 2) 1TB. Both OS's are on the 130GB.

Video Card: nVidia 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 Edition (BFG Overclocked)

I must say, Windows 7 seems to use about 600MB of ram on startup, but as I watch the ticker, I notice the OS gradually reduced down to a more comfortable 450mb or so. XP uses 350MB, but I have quite a few visuals disabled on XP. Windows 7 does have Aero enabled with the gadgets, fading backgrounds, and I typically have several windows open.

My other system is my laptop, which runs Windows 7 completely. I'm sitting right now with 5 Chrome Tabs Open, 2 Visual Studio Projects up, an Open Office Document, 1 explorer, vDownloader, notepad, Media Player Classic, and 3 MSN tabs up. I have a total of 67 processes running and utilizing 65% of my RAM.

This system has the following specs:

CPU: AMD Sempron x86_64 2.1GHZ Single Core

RAM: 3GB

Hard Drive: A small 120GB Hard Drive

Video Card: nVidia 8200m Series.

The laptop came with Vista Basic Pre-Installed (gag.), so I got Windows 7 and installed it. Noticed quite an improvement. The Operating System can be left alone for days at a time on my laptop, and it will perform auto maintenance and go into standby when it's done. I wake from standby in a matter of seconds, and all my work is still the same. I've been quite pleased with Windows 7's new taskbar system, which I was iffy about at first but grew to love it.

The OS is definitely what Vista could/should have been. Microsoft seems to have listened to the complains of people about Vista and the early beta's/RC's of Windows 7 and really came through with this new Operating System. I've seen improved stability beyond XP's hardcore stability (I have yet to crash Windows 7 on either my desktop or laptop). I did crash my video drivers in Windows 7. Normally, in XP, I would have been forced to reboot with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), but my screen flashed for a few seconds as the drivers reinitialized with a notification from Windows saying "Your Video Drivers have crashed and were restarted successfully.", which made me quite happy I didn't lose any of my work I was doing at the time.

Even when installing, Windows 7 installed in nearly half the time as Vista. I was popping my disk in expecting a long boot up process, but I found out quickly that the installation was very single click oriented and seemed to know what I wanted to do. Even searching works faster than Vista (but mind you, I let the Index Service run for days at a time), and is quite solidly built. I will admit I had to reinstall once, but it was because I stupidly installed a virus on the computer (No Antivirus = :()

I'm not sure what kind of PC you have Agckuu_Coceg, or what version of Windows 7 you tested/tried out. I have to calmly disagree with your posts about Windows 7 being buggy. I haven't had a complaint about the Operating System yet, and I don't see it changing in the future.

And I'm talking about my old PC, which is already 4 years old.

CPU: Pentium 4 2,66 Ghz

Ram: 512 MB

Video-card: 256 MB ATI Radeon X600

So, W7 on my old PC ate good 326 MB RAM and hung like a lamb. Without any shelters where she ate a 304 MB RAM.

But XP SP3, I ate only 240 MB RAM.

And I know quite why - W7 created on the engine of Windows Vista, and has the same bugs when applied to old computers.

You have just new computers. And if you sit on the old times, then you'll understand what I mean.

Once again i can defend my position on Windows 7.

I tried it on my very old computer tower(11 Years Old) and ran perfectly fine with no problems except being stuck with 800x600 resolution. It ran just as fast as my computer with instant loading for everything.

Old Computer Tower:

CPU: Pentium 3 800 Mhz

Ram: 384 MB

Video-card: 16 MB Unknown Nvidia Card

Hard Drive: 20gb

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Retail.

No lie even come over and see for your self.

Its only the os's fault 5% of the time, 95% of the time its user related.

Im telling you lots has changed in the Retail and all bugs have been removed.

....Er, wait what happened? Is my thread merging with the other one or something? XD

Anyways I'm upgrading motherboard/processor, along with a graphics card sometime soon. (won't be able to use the MB without a new card anyway)

I would definitely recommend getting Windows 7. It much better then Vista, and it is better the XP. My current laptop with W7 specs are (and are perfectly fine for gaming, even though laptops aren't meant for gaming):

Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T4300 (2.1GHz, 800MHz FSB)
Graphics: Intel GMA 4500M - Up to 1308MB DVMT
RAM: 3GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

They are not the greatest specs in the world, but because of that, my laptop can run high-end games very easily. Windows 7 uses as much of the available resources to their potential. I think with your specs, you should be perfectly fine, and 64-bit W7 would work fine with your processor. 64-bit means that if you want to upgrade your RAM, you can use more than 4GB, unlike in 32-bit which has a limit of 3-4GB. 64-bit also allows you to run multiple programs at the same time without hogging up RAM. With it you will experience little lag.

If you have any more questions just ask :P

Yeah, that was the RC (Release Candidate) and BETA builds, as well as the 'Windows Build 7000' aplha version. The retail Windows7 version is perfected in ways of usability.
