Why do you use RPG Maker, and how did you find it?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I was curious of two things.

1: How did you come by RPG Maker, and which version do you use?

2: Why do you use it? Sounds like an obvious question, but it can be deeper than it appears.

For me, I started with the original RPG maker for the Playstation. I got it back when Media Play was still in business, around 10 years ago. I first heard about the ones on the computer from a 'friend' at school.

As for why I use it... Well, I have all these stories, but nobody reads anymore. So, why not give them a graphical interface, and allow the 'reader' a chance to participate in the story? That and because I get bored and it is the only thing I can do to pass the time.

Right now, I use XP simply because it is more versatile and better graphically than VX. In fact, there is only ONE thing I like about VX better: The framerate.

I first started by looking for a tool to make my own RPG games. I first found RM95 but before i got to try it i heard that RM2000 was out so i started on that then shortly after RM2003 came out then shortly XP. I use rpg maker because i was always interested in classic RPG's like FF6 and i wanted to make my own game.

Before that it was me drawing on paper thinking how cool it would be to have a game like this. Now i can. But most of the fun is not there anymore and i enjoy my time helping people with it and getting them into it.

Interesting. I never found 95, but i had 1 and 2, then 2000, 2k3, XP and VX. So I know where you are coming from. In fact, I HATED scripting when i first got XP... Try and figure THAT one out.

That is some quirky luck. Just a chance thing.

For me it was RPG Maker 95(i think!) that I found on one of my older brothers many many CDs. He used to use Game Maker quite a lot before he grew out of it, and so did I. Anyway I was trying to make a DBZ game in RM95 when I decided to google if there was a newer version. That's when I found RMXP, in fact I remember the very first I started it up and the first time that saw the battle system because i was amazed(probably comparing it to RM95). I have a very selective memory and remember some things extremely clearly, that night being one of them. For example, In 1998 when I was 7 years old I remember my parents coming out on the front lawn holding up an xtra(internet provider) box thingy and telling us we had just got the internet.

Soon after I got a little bored with it, and that's when I found creationasylum, my very first forum which was early in 2006. I loved it in the beginning actually, it was a new thing to me. That motivated me to use RMXP more and start making some resources. Helping a member or two(ravenclaw, our first staff member to be exact) made me want to create my own forum, and i liked creationasylum so much that i was guilty of copying it. But things have changed over the very long time we have been around. And this forum is what motivated me to use RMXP and helping members on the forum, which sadly I have not done in a while.

My cousin was tinkering with it(RM2000), by then he'd proudly developed a mini-map complete with a blinking indicator. I still remember the game he was making, it was ingenious for the most part. He had two world maps, they were like 100 years apart. One map, you could see the geographical differences. And he had a game boy where there were separate inventories.... Ah.

I had always revered my cousin, he had the resources, head start, and time I didn't have. At my age now, he was able to force another computer to turn on and open a display message through IP address. I gave up my dream of being that computer savvy, but I still tinker with RPG Maker for the hobby.

Oh, that was a little long, wasn't it? Sorry. lol

I got RPG Maker XP about three years ago as an introductory manual on designing 2D-games, along with GM7 and MMF. It very liked me, and I began to use it for my projects.

After my friend lent me his 'Fire Emblem 7' GBA cartridge for a month I got really absorbed in it. But after he needed it back, I had no similar games to play (take to mind that I didn't know about emulators then). I saw someone at school creating similar games, so I decided to search Google for 'game creator tools'. RPG Maker VX (still in jap) came up. I decided to learn my way around it. Years later, I'm still using it.

As of now, I use RM to create games that anyone could, but to also aid others. If I coded a game in raw C++, and someone needed help with their C++ game, they might be using a different base for their game than to my game, and I wouldn't be able to help them without investigating their game's inner workings. If I create games with RM and become skilled enough, I thought, I could help others out and share my expertise, as both our games use RM. Even if one game uses XP and I use 2K (fat chance, I really only use VX), then both of the styles would remain similar. So some general guidelines would still work.

My brother heard about an rpg maker program from a friend online. I decided to do some research on this unknown "rpg maker" by searching on youtube and then on google. I looked for a trial version and found the XP trial. It was fun and I then got the VX as well (once I heard that there was another version of rpg maker :P). That how I found it, as for why I use it...... 1, I always like playing games, the rpg ones. When I found out that rpg maker allows you to make them, how could I not try it and get it. Another reason is that I'm planning to make games in the future, get a job in the game making business. So XP and VX can help me understand how things work, even if their not 100% accurate for making "real" games. They're also fun to play with when your game(s) are done. I use both XP and VX.

Edit:@Arkbennett: I think mine is a bit longer :P
