formlesstree4 18 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 The year 2012 has been of much controversy. While governments are staying quiet about this, much news has been spread along Internet Forums, Blog sites, and even Youtube. What I want to know is: Do you think this is real? Why do/Why don't you think this is real? I think it's real in some sense. The Mayan Calender does in fact end on December, in the year 2012. But not for what we first thought. There's been rumors going around that a 'Magnetic Shift'/'Polar Shift' could occur, where the North & South poles would swap locations and changing the rotation of the planet. That would cause immense destruction, as the waters, which would be going in one direction, would now be forcibly changed to a different direction. Not to mention the continental shifts that will occur from the force of the planet changing rotation. On top of this, we have the rumored Nibiru/Planet X that is coming towards us with a 25% chance of slamming into us, and a 100% chance of showering us with meteors and freezing our planet's rotation for a minimum of a week. Global death rate will soar to nearly 2/3 (66%) of the population. With the current population, that is 2,230,676,759 people dead. On top of this, 2/3's of the survivors (1,487,117,839) will perish from starvation, disease, and crime. That leaves us with 2,974,235,679 humans left on our planet.* Right now, I'm not a firm believer, but I do think something extraordinary will occur on that day. I just hope that it's not the end of mankind because I still have goals to accomplish in life (such as finishing college, which if 2012 does happen, I probably will not be able to finish college.) Further predictions is that we will see a New Stone Age (N.S.A.) until technology can be reestablished and Electricity can also be recreated. So my fellow RMXPU forumers, what is your opinion on this? * These figures are the current estimations.
Leon 55 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 Ever watch the series finale of the X-Files? I mean that, seriously. Alien invasion was predicted there. Of course, the Mayan calendar must end on some day or other. Dec. 22nd 2012 could be a mere coincidence. No more a significant date than Sept. 22nd; or Feb. 11th. Personally, I find more interest in the climate change going on. Scientists claim global warming, yet they lost their proof (oopsie!!!). What people don't seem to get is climate changes happen every few hundred years and NOTHING humans can do about it. If the world were to end, it'd just be due to a harsh climate change. To still, what is more interesting is the political stance and current state of the world. Middle east is in an uproar (what else is new?) but now you have US-Russian ties going down-hill. N.Korea developing nukes against their treaty with the UN. Speaking of which, the UN is pissed at the US for being in Iraq; however, what most people forget is that Bush declared a war on TERROR. NOT a war on Afganistan, Pakistan, or Iraq. If you are following, you will see that ties around all ends are unraveling. THAT is the starts of WWIII, and someone is gonna drop da big bomb. All around, the world is going to Hell in a hand-basket, and I must say, sipping Jager and watchin' it is most interesting.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 Didn't they say all the planets will line up? If that's so it could get very cold if were blocked from the sun. We could all die of being froze to death unless underground bunker with heat. I highly doubt some huge tidal wave is going to come. If there was even a chance of that happening Antarctica would have been half melted by now, if not all the way. And if a planet is going to smack into us we will have enough time to stop it or save our self's. A meteor shower = underground bunker. EDIT: should have Maybe in the poll. Kaylen 1 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 I wouldn't worry about it. The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world in 2012, It's just when their calender ends. I would however worry about WWIII, because it's going to happen very soon, maybe even coincidentally near 2012. Don't view it as the 'end of the world' though, view it as fixing the world. All the problems in the world are caused by there being too many people, so a war will probably eliminate about 60-80% of the population. A nuclear war will probably get about 95-99%, so there would still be people. Not saying I'm glad tons of people are going to die, it's just for the better overall. OverlordMao 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 A polar shift seems highly impossible, I don't see how that could even be possible. And I'm sure scientists are going to find some kind of rocket (not a nuke) to shoot at Planet X, if it were to hit us. However, do believe something BIG might happen on that day. The Mayans might have hoped to have survived that long for some ceremony or something, I don't know anything about Maya culture. It could also be the time when I finish school (...maybe '>>). Anything can happen, and that can include nothing. Still, why did the calender end then? Were they forced to stop the calender at that day? So many questions... wait, thats only two. ...What was I talking about again? I think I'll just end the post here. :P
Marked 197 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 No, just no. I suppose I'm a realist, but it just seems comical to me.
Kaylen 1 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 Here's how the calender works... The base year for the Mayan Long Count starts at "0.0.0.0.0". Each zero goes from 0-19 and each represent a tally of Mayan days. So, for example, the first day in the Long Count is denoted as 0.0.0.0.1. On the 19th day we'll have 0.0.0.0.19, on the 20th day it goes up one level and we'll have 0.0.0.1.0. This count continues until 0.0.1.0.0 (about one year), 0.1.0.0.0 (about 20 years) and 1.0.0.0.0 (about 400 years). Therefore, if I pick an arbitrary date of 2.10.12.7.1, this represents the Mayan date of approximately 1012 years, 7 months and 1 day. And here's an article from a scientist... http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/ask-an-astrobiologist/intro/nibiru-and-doomsday-2012-questions-and-answers

Leon 55 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 A polar shift seems highly impossible On the contrary. The 'magnetic' north has shifted approximately 4 degrees in the last 50 years. It is conceivable that if the planets were to align, the magnetic force in some of the other planets could cause further shift of our poles. Heck, Neptune spins perpendicular to how our planet spins. (North/South as opposed to East/West)

Tomo2000 60 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 I've done quite a lot of research on this topic and Polraudio is correct. The planets line up in such a manner that the Earth temporarily looses sunlight. Nobody knows how long but it will be for less then a day because all the planets keep moving. They don't stop just to screw us up; they have to keep moving. Anyway, it takes 8 seconds for the sunlight to reach earth from the sun, that means when the planets line up we still get 8 seconds of sunlight. The Earth will still be heated, however. Its like a heater that you unplug; it would take quite a while for it to cool down to a freezing rate. Around 3 and a half weeks, I believe. And 22nd December, 2012 isn't the end of the Mayian Callender; it is the end of the 'Great Cycle'. Everybody straight away assumed that this was the end of all the humans on Earth. Anyway, they celebrate this day (and the ones before it) because they believed that it was their gods that blocked out the sunlight temporarily. The end of the 'Great Cycle' is when the sunlight gets blocked off. Nothing to fear about.

While you are right, the Galaxy itself will have been aligned directly on it's own Equator at this same date. The 'Great Cycle' is the pulse of the galaxy, when it becomes completely level for one short instance. What happens then is anybody's guess. In all actuality, we should be worried more about Planet X, which has a higher threat level to us simply because it can easily smack into our Planet and completely rape us. Here's a scale: Earth: 0 Planet X: 0 We don't stand a chance if it were to smash into us (which is a a 25% chance)

Leon 55 Report post Posted December 14, 2009 Well, at any rate, contemplating the possibilities doesn't do us all a lick of good. Does anyone honestly think they stopped the calender because of the end of the world? Who wants to make endless calenders? I think they simply stopped. I know us current humans have made future calenders, but not all the way up to the year 5000.
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted December 14, 2009 How about we all just stop using the internet to try and prove a fact. I mean yes Wiki is a nice place, and full of many things based off fact, but like all things about the internet here is a fact for you. 98% of all stuff on the internet is bull shit (not based off facts). This comes from research done back in like 2007. Meaning that you only have a 2% chance of finding a site that gives the facts about something. As for planet X I did a search on the Discovery website and the only topics brought up relate to 2012, so I doubt this plant exists (take note I said doubt and not simply does not). Now I am not saying anyone here got their facts from Wiki I just simply used it as an example. Your best bet is to go to a local college in your area (regardless of your age) and see if they have someone who teaches Astronomy (the study of stars, galaxy, and everything that is space) and ask them about Planet X. Now on a side note the only reference I have ever heard of Planet X was when I watched a Documentary on the discovery channel about how our world was made. When the solar system was first formed there where two plants rotating on the same axis which crashed into each other. This collision caused the Earth to spin and tilt on it's axis. The rest of the debri formed our little moon. This also explains why some rocks can only be found on one side of the Earth, but can be found on the moon as well. Jesse66126 4 Report post Posted December 17, 2009 I heard we're slowly losing our moon. every year it moves like a millimeter away from Earth. Also, even if the world doesn't end in 2012. It WILL end by the year 4000. the sun's going to implode, that's what sun's do. It's going to collapse in on itself and burn out.

Leon 55 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Moon controls the tides, as for the sun, it could implode tomorrow, for all we know. All i do know is it is relatively soon.
Tomo2000 60 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Our sun will not implode for an estimated 4 billion years. It is an average sized star so they can estimate the implosion time due to observations made of smaller sizes and then they can estimate it from there. As Leon mentioned, the moon controls the tides, but it also dues much more than that. Scientists have confirmed that the distance from the earth and visibility of the moon can affect animal's behaviours and if they can see the moon or not. If the moon where to disappear then all animals on Earth, probally including us, would go crazed and rampared.

Chief 30 Report post Posted December 27, 2009 First off, since when are the Mayans, an undeveloped human sacrificing people, and all knowing race? Yeah, thats just wrong. I dont care what storms or earthquakes were on their calendar. they were barely human, as they acted like savage animals. Also, their calendar is supposed to just restart and go back to the beginning. its a wheel, and they have it as a cycle. no end, just repeating. As for the global warming. There are more plausible theories to this. First one is that we were in an ice age a long time ago, and we are still gradually coming out of it. This feeds to the second theory that the Earth just has a cycle taht would round in an ice age-to-warm part system. This makes complete sense to me. Im sure the Earth can take a beating. dont worry about emitting gasses from your cars, the earth is fine, we're on a cycle.
Marked 197 Report post Posted December 27, 2009 Well Chief, apparently the Mayans got a lot of things right. So people are more willing to believe in their theories. You know what the problem with humans is, we believe what we're told. Watch a documentary, read a book, listen to the government, church people, we believe it. All of it. I once heard as a little school kid(like 11) one of my teachers say that every smoke takes 1 day off your life. Bullshit miss. I called her out on it, and she said it was a fact. Show me the scientific experiment for that one. Global warming, conveniently changed to 'climate change' may or may not exist. More likely not, because we just don't know whats going to happen. That's my theory and it satisfies my curiosity. It is impossible to predict the future, we don't know what's going to happen and us humans are obviously along for the ride like all the other animals. At least I am confident that in my life time, the planet will be here.
Chief 30 Report post Posted December 27, 2009 Yeah, but most are not so much concerned with it being here when their alive. more like for their children or grandchildren, but I think its all gonna be fine. I do agree with you to an extent.
