I will simply say this:

Since I got this idea I have posted it on just about every community possible. From communities such as this to countless business communities, and even software and game development communities. And everyone has liked the idea asking LOGICAL questions based on a business stand point. Those who have faultered or conducted and in depth and useless questions come from John Does and Jane Does who don't own a business and choose to protect piracy. It proves to me the lack of understanding and pointing stuff out that "those numbers are my opinion" which in fact they came from a survey held by about.com in Oct 2009 which also interviewed a few owners of Warez sites.

---Done in topic.

We are most certainly not done. You reintroduce new data to me which you never said, and made a few....points.

I'm wondering if you're labeling anyone who has responded like I have a John/Jane Doe. I do not choose to protect piracy. Never once did I say I did. I do not think you are meaning me in this, but I want to make it clear.

A lack of understanding? You never even told me where your sources came from originally. There was only time you mentioned a 2002 survey by the same people. 2002 is quite different from 2009. I also based what I said from you, with you yourself saying you estimated, or should I go back and quote your post?

Hebi you need to stop taking suggestions and ideas as criticisms.

And everyone has liked the idea asking LOGICAL questions based on a business stand point.

If you like I can just close the topic.

With your idea, there is also the issue of differing laws in countries. What is illegal in the USA may be legal in Sweden. For example, the police of Sweden (and the US government) tried to take down piratebay, but they "failed miserably" according to the creators. I suggest watching the movie "Steal this Film".

I live in New Zealand, and I know a thing or two about our laws. If I hosted illegal content on my site which i hosted from my computer, how would you, a person living in the USA, shut my site down? This is NOT a criticism, its a hypothetical question that I am curious about. My second hypothetical question(which should be a bit easier): If the site hosted from my computer supplied LINKS to illegal downloads, how would you shut me down? And remember, for your authorities to have any power over me, there has to be an international treaty(which i'm unaware of if there is any. But the FBI or some authority from the USA did arrest a hacker living here, but i dont know if they have the same authority under these circumstances)

Also I HEARD that there is a grey area when there are simply links to illegal content, so that content is not hosted on the site itself.

First off if you did research it is not that hard to shut a site down, unless they are owned and operated (e.g the servers are at my house). Tough times, but can be done...

Also shutting a site down is not as hard as people think it is. For example if I had my own servers and everyone failed to "locate me" they could then go after the domain name I use. All domain names (either .com .net .co .ja, etc are all monitored by one agency for all countries. A simple court order and the domain name no longer works. And thinking in the sense of where you live and not having to go by US laws is correct, but do some research (and I have) and plenty of sites from NZ have been taken down. And your argument for just linking to them is enough to shut a site down as they are aiding in getting and handing out illegal content.

SIDE NOTE

I see no reason to close the topic. It just turned into a debate that's all. We all have right to believe what we want to, but in the end we are are hard headed (like me) we will stand up to it right or wrong. Debates are good they can relive tress someone may be having. Sorry if I got carried away people, but I'm a developer so piracy is not best friend.

EDIT

If anything just move the topic: Debate and Mature Discussion

I agree, the fact that our opinions clash is no reason to close the topic (unless it's requested by Hebi, which he said he doesn't want it closed).

Debates can be a release of stress, and I don't think anyone has gotten to the point of yelling and raging at each other...

I am also a developer Hebi, and working with a company as well (just co-founded it recently) and I don't view piracy as a threat to the company (probably because most of our things will be free or very low costing).
