Should prostitution be legal in the US?

Recommended Posts

The world's oldest profession is a big no in 49 of the 50 states in the US. However it is legal in Nevada, and is heavily regulated. In order to buy sex you must take an STD test. The Prostitutes must also take STD test once or twice a month. To this day not one customer has gotten an STD.

Prostitution should be legalized and regulated by the states with the same system in Nevada. Another major factor for protecting the prostitutes is that the sex will take place in brothels. There will be no controlling pimps taking advantage of a hooker. Also the prostitute would not get rapped with a customer who has already paid at the brothel.

This regulation would protect both the customer and the prostitute. The police should spend their time handling major criminals like murders, rapist, and thieves than prostitutes. This should decrease the amount of women going to jail. Drug use would most likely decrease because regulated prostitution is not done on the streets.

This and Marijuana are the lower class crimes that could be easily legalized and hardly any negative effects would take place. But it's legalization is influenced by money.

Drugs are heavily influenced by money, but not prostitution. Illegal prostitution does not make nearly as much money as legal prostitution.

Should not be made legal. From a non christian perspective, I find it to be for losers who are too much of a lazy arse to form a real relationship and stick with it.

From my christian perspective, its a sexual sin, and completely immoral, bible or not.

I find it disturbing, distasteful, disgusting, and humiliating. Women, or men for that matter, are not objects created for sex, "profession" or not. Its wrong, and people need to be held to higher standards, not treated like dogs, objects, or slaves. Legalizing it for the sake of keeping people from having STD's is stupid. just dont do it in the first place and you wont have to worry about it.

Franklin, I didn't mean money for the whores. I meant the US Government will want to tax prostitution, it's much harder to monitor compared to other businesses.

And I'm pretty sure when it comes to legalizing prostitution, they don't see Chiefs non-christian perspective. They are also not supposed to incorporate Christian values into law decision making, or so I believe.

Sex is a biological and psychological need. Not every person is given the same opportunities in life. What if a man is deformed and has a missing nose. Most women will not give him the time of day. Do you normally see a deformed person in a relationship? Nope. There are some people who do not want a committed relationship. This is a better way of them having sex instead of having one night stands with someone who may have an STD. Being a tested hooker is actually much safer.

Yes, Church and State are not together.

Actually it is not taxed in Nevada. However the owners of the brothels said they are OK with taxes, but they must be allowed to have brothels in more towns. Right now the population limit for a brothel to be in an area is 100,000 people.

As some of you know, in New Zealand it is legal and it's fine. I think I even heard stories of some prostitutes doing their own tax, but probably just a story. It is pretty much unregulated apart from the age requirement, which is the legal sex age. I think there was a public vote (referendum) on the matter, but I'm not certain about that.

I'm not in the US so I probably cannot contribute much to the argument. However in NZ, most of the people that I know of are not really religious or practice a religion. And I hear in the US that the majority of the people are Christian? I'm not sure, but what I'm trying to say is that such values will make it impossible to make it legal, the people just won't want it. So based on the psychology of it, prostitution should not be made legal in the US.

In saying that, if it were everyones religion to NOT eat cheese, I'd recommend making it illegal too. See what I'm getting at? There's nothing necessarily wrong with the thing made illegal, its whether its within the peoples values and whether or not it is socially desirable.

Lol, the majority of the people are not Christian... not at all. the numbers of real christians is very slim. some people fake it, and make it all "religious" when its not supposed to be. you see people protesting with signs saying "God hates Fags" and then youre like, well, where is Jesus then? no, the dwindling ammount of real christians is alarming.

RkoFranklin, the excuses that you are pouring out are just excuses. From my psychological standpoint, this seems to be a continuation thread from your other one on how you cant find a girl to be a attracted to you.

Sex is not an uncontrollable hunger, you will not die from having sex, therefore it is not a need. Having sex with random women is wrong, no matter what light is being shed upon the situation. I thought you were a christian too, and if so, there should be no argument for it coming from you, and if not, its still just poor excuses being made.

I'm not saying that you must have sex to live. However sex is a need. A person who never had sex could have issues because sex is apart of life.

Actually the majority of people say they are Christians. I believe about 70% of the people say that. Do they actually act upon that statement is unlikely.

Excuse you? What does my problem with women have to do with this? If you have something to say about that then state it in that thread. There is no excuse your personal attack on me.

Sometimes, We have to ignore what's right or wrong and focus on what's smart or not smart.

How is whats right different from whats smart? I do not believe in separation of church and state, as it leads to a form of governing with no morals, and no sense of right and wrong.

I don't think any light is being shed on prostitution. Because of course these are your values, but others have the opposite values.

How is whats right different from whats smart?

My first post answers this question. I also looked up what percentage of Americans are christian, and the vast majority identify themselves as christian(although of course not necessarily practice it)

Now it's my turn:

Prostitution would catch on in certain areas of the United States (I feel it'd be more in the North Eastern areas where Prostitution is already around). However, as it has been pointed out, most Americans are Christian, which would prove a serious hindrance to any sort of legalization of Prostitution. In the long run, no, it shouldn't be. The problems outweigh any sort of benefits that can be gained (money for the Government comes to mind).

This topic skewered into issues about Separation of Church and State. I can refer to the Roman Empire in this case. It's Government didn't separate them, and back then, Religion ruled over everything. Now, it makes more sense for a system to be free of tying morals (such as a Religion of any denomination) to act freely and independent. Prejudice due to Religious restraints will cause chaos. Enough on that subject.

The difference between what's right and what's smart is how it affects yourself and others. If doing what's right will end up killing everything, while doing what's smart will save hundreds, if not thousands of people, would you choose the smart thing?

RkoFranklin, the excuses that you are pouring out are just excuses. From my psychological standpoint, this seems to be a continuation thread from your other one on how you cant find a girl to be a attracted to you.

Personal attack not required Chief. Your view has been noted and was not required/needed for the continuation of this topic. :nono4:

Finally, back on topic.

It comes down to the individual morals of the person/persons affected. The Government will probably not pass such a thing as it would be viewed as....probably demoralizing even to the Congress. Our country does have some morals (even with separation of Church and State), and prostitution crosses a line at some point.

I suggest that some replies be pruned else this thread could divulge into a pointless flame war because of various religions that may/may not be present here.

I had a presentation on European prostitution in Europe Politics. It went really well and I got an B. The class had a good discussion about prostitution and rather or not to allow it to be legal in the US. The majority of people who spoke are against it.

So you disagree with separation of church and state even though this country was founded by people fleeing from religious persecution? Do you believe that people from non christian -or even non monotheistic religions- should be allowed equal societal sway as Christians?

Personally, I'm an Atheist, and I believe that religious laws should stay in the home. My view is that our country is built around freedom, first and foremost, and just so happens to be home to a large population of Christians.

I would also like to know what your views on pornography and sexually explicit media are, since our majority christian society seems to have a heavy addiction to these things.

(Not trying to derail the topic, just asking.)

Not entirely true. From a biological perspective, at one point in a males life or another they might crave the idea of sex for means of reproduction.

Arkbennet is correct. What if a person is in a position to not have willing sexual partners? Someone could be born with a deformity or disability which most people find unattractive. Why should he or she live without experiencing sex? There are some things in this world we cannot control.

I see no one has posted in this topic for a while, but me being gone like I was, was just reading around. I personally think it should be made legal. Then again I think marijuana should be made legal too. Has Ark pointed out earlier, both of these could be made legal with really no negative effects.

Me I'm a atheist so I see nothing on the religion part. But like someone else pointed the country was basically founded on wanting everyone to be free. How are we free if we incorporate religion into all of our laws?

I vote that it should be made legal in the U.S.

Prostitution is legal in Nevada. And it's a lot safer to be a navada-whore than, say, a chicago whore. If you really think about it, a question like this in a forum made up of a majority of men or sexually active teens (I use the phrase, "sexually active" in a very literal way... *fwap fwap*), any answers to this particular question will be incredibly biased. Of course, a majority of us have already realized that.

My answer:

Yus. I do think it should be legal, but in the same way its legal in nevada. They have to have a house ruin by a housemother or whatever and they have to have benifits. The men have to be forced to use protection or be asked to leave and the girls should all have protection from more violent patrons.

etc etc...

First off, I would like to point out that this is not a personal attack on anyone in any way, shape or form.

However, being a discussion about prostitution, a profession dating back millenia, this topic has moral underlyings that can and probably will

offend someone. It is not my intent to offend, only to open eyes.

Well, being a Nevada resident, and having actually been to one of the establishments for a bachelor party, I would have to say that legalization of prostitution would overall not be a bad idea. The health precautions taken by some of the more reputable establishments are nigh-impossible to

way-side. If a woman doesnt get her bi-weekly check-up with the doctor who comes to the establishment for examinations, she is barred from working

until she has been cleared by a certified practitioner. Also, the women who work in these sort of places are independent contractors, not slaves. One woman made over $100k a year, and with renting her accommodations, she still made out with over 75k in pocket, before taxes. Prostitute/whore, whatever you want to call it, they may fit the bill by profession, but are certainly more professional, and by and large, treated better than your common street-walker. So, you may be morally against the idea, but on the larger whole, for the greater good of those people who are forced into

such situations, I think it's a pretty fair deal.

Mother of 3 cant work for some reason or other, and has limited options. Without the legalization, if she were to resort to selling her body for

money, there's a greater chance of her contracting an STD, becoming addicted to some sort of drug, assault, and a slew of other dangers associated

with walking in the streets at night looking for lonely johns. Whereas, the woman who decides to take the same route in a legalized state, has less of a chance for any of those things to happen. Also, taking a look at the economical side of things, the women who do not work in a legalized state are subject to jailtime for doing what they do, make much less money and also do not have taxes filed on their income. Women who do work in a legalized state, have larger incomes, mostly over $50k a year, and have to file taxes on their income. Sure, it can damage relationships in situations where a married man sleeps with a woman who is not his wife, but that's a common problem throughout society, not just in relation to prostitution.

So, from an economical and health/safety standpoint, the motion to pass legalization is logical. From a moral standpoint, it's your choice. But like I say to everyone, how you feel about it is your own opinion, but to deny the women who are mostly forced into non-legal prostitution, the opportunity to make more money, in a cleaner, safer manner, because someone is uncomfortable with it is just selfish.

Unless your in the Military. If they legalized weed, the military would still hold true to its rule. Not that I care because weed makes me tired any way and I hate that feeling.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/denmark/1499735/Taxpayers-foot-bill-for-disabled-Danes-visits-to-prostitutes.html

Disabled Danes are being encouraged to make monthly visits to prostitutes and reclaim the cost from the taxpayer, under laws intended to guarantee them equal rights.

In a move that has provoked angry protests but has delighted the country's legalised sex industry, the Danish government has launched an information campaign advising the disabled how best to go about obtaining erotic services.

The read rest in the link above.

What do you guys think about this law? I actually think it is a good law. People will disabilities will have less opportunities to have sex. I do not know if this only includes physical disabilities. There is also a such thing as social disabilities such as having a deformity that does not cause you being physically disabled such as my ears and Megan Fox's thumb. Back to the main point, sex is a psychological need. I doubt many of these disabled people were getting this need.

Yeah I agree. I saw a documentary on this subject.

A main about it is that prostitution is dangerous. One of the reasons it is illegal in some countries. The are usually woman so have a physical disadvantage if things go sour, and with some of the men picking up prostitutes, that may not be uncommon.

So the with the men with disabilities, they go to a controlled environment, get what the want, and its a safe and mutual transaction.

EDIT: Oh, the government is encouraging it? No I don't think that's good. It's almost like a (UN?) country saying 'no, climate change is fictional': it may be beneficial or the right thing, but its not a socially undesirable thing to say.

I don't see anything wrong with the government to encourage this situation. The disabled people are not being forced to go meet prostitutes. They are simply encourage to boost their happiness in life.
