megatron0000 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2010 Ok a friend of mine and i were recently talkin about how Final Fantasy has evolved for better or worse from a strong turn based strategy RPG to a shiny, pretty repetitive, turn based spam-bot. I used to enjoy FF a lot more when you, idk, controled everyone on your team, had to choose your abilities instead of just constantls "auto_____"ing or using "Gambits" aka im lazy and want every other member of my party to act as programmed. Don't get me wrong, i like FFXII and XIII but they just dont feel like the FF games i used to LOVE. Said friend said that he would not be surprised to see this series turn into a GoW'ish series before too long. I guess i just like the old ways too much to fully accept the current state of the series. Call me old fashioned but i say if ain't broke dont fix it. It doesnt have to be the same but it doesnt need to be a completely different game all together either. Its not just the FF series that does this either. Look at Castlevania. Insanely hard sidescroller turned into an insanely easy hack and slash. I will play the new one but dont think it will stand out like SotN did. I am curious as to what you guys think. Am i wrong or does the FF series seem to be heading in a bad direction?
FranklinX 37 Report post Posted March 16, 2010 Final Fantasy one through six and twelve are good games. I like the battler system in 12 because it is more realistic. Who stands still to get hit? 7,8, 9, 10, and 11 are awful. 8 is indeed the worst with a joke of a difficulty and a terrible story. This was the time Final Fantasy went downhill. 12 got it out of the hole and 13 just put it straight back down in the hole. 1 megatron0000 reacted to this
Derseren 6 Report post Posted March 16, 2010 Honestly, I haven't been impressed with final fantasy lately. I played through most of 12, but that's about it besides beating 7 and 8.
valkill100 1 Report post Posted March 16, 2010 I actually liked part 9 other than the super deformity. It felt more like the classic nes/snes era. As for the way the series as a whole seems to be going in a radically whole new direction, I remember it was mentioned a few times how each Final Fantasy in the series were going to be different from the rest. Although, it will be a sad day indeed if they continue to follow this trend of alienating the die hard fans in exchange for a more mass market approach. I prefer my RPG to be classic, such as it is, standard leveling hasn't been present since 12( not counting 11 or the inevitable 14). Rpgs in general have always been story driven for example, but with the increasing number of mainstream MMOs and western thinking RPG elements( although good in their own right) seems to be saturating among younger generation which has companies like Square-Enix scrambling to appease to them all. I hope that all made sense.
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted March 17, 2010 Anything after VI is garbage (good games, I don't consider them as "Final Fantasy"). VII is good, but I don't see it as FF, nor anything else. Although, I was extremely impressed with IX and XII. They brought back so much of the past FF tiles, I was shocked. Plus, IX/XII music is amazing! :)
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted March 17, 2010 Yes final fantasy is heading downhill. I liked all the ff's before x-2. X-2and above all suck. 12was alright but still let me down. I miss the world map that was in 9 and below.itmakes the game feel like it's actually getting somewhere and has more freedom. Ff's now days are so limited and don't have as much freedom and they lack quests.
Agckuu_Coceg 5 Report post Posted March 17, 2010 Frankly, I was not delighted with all the Final Fantasy X-2 after. They became terribly since they came out of the normal canons of JRPG in favor. Hopefully in the FF 14, which, unlike its predecessors, has finally come to the PC (AS I waited for it ...) and the remake FF 7 (I wonder what Square Enix is looking for people to create a modern engine, which can be applied this remake itself and further games) Although it is still worse - Square Enix is going to make FF 13-2. Although, judging by the words, it might be interesting.
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 Definitely going down the shoot. Despite what other users say, I feel that up to 10, Square did a good job. Even though Squall was kind of a super-pussy. That said, I'd even go as far as say 10-2 was a good game: A well rounded battle system, fun job system since FFT, and the plot wasn't bad as well. An online FF was a bad idea. And it just got worse from there with all those silly FF7 Spin-offs that over killed the series and destroyed Cloud's personality... Not to mention the the crappy Dissidia plot I was force fed. Luckily Versus XIII seems to be heading in the right direction, it will have a world map and an airship. One can assume it will also have a town with people you can talk too as well. ...Then they'll go downhill with 14 and make another FF Online game and give it a numeric instead of calling it Final Fantasy Online. Edit: On a side note however, I just read a quote that PSU pulled from Motomu Toriyama, one of the Lead Designers/Writers of Final Fantasy XIII. Commenting on what FF game he'd like to remake... “If we had the manpower and the time to work on a project,” he continued, adding, “if we were to remake Final Fantasy VII with the quality of Final Fantasy XIII it would become a tremendous project 0.o But that game sucked... FranklinX 37 Report post Posted March 20, 2010 Atleast they have not decided for a Mystic Quest 2! They really should make a squeal for Final Fantasy 6. This game is widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever made. It would make more sense than making 13-2.
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted March 20, 2010 I concur, however I have not beat that one yet. XIII-2 is a bad idea.
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted March 21, 2010 Atleast they have not decided for a Mystic Quest 2! They really should make a squeal for Final Fantasy 6. This game is widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever made. It would make more sense than making 13-2. We'll see three more spin-offs of FFVII and then a remake of that before we ever see anything related to FFVI or FFV :(
FranklinX 37 Report post Posted March 21, 2010 It's just bad business. Has anyone has noticed with certain video game companies is that "supply and demand" is ignored? Who asked for 13-2? It took Capcom years to make MegaMan 9 with allot of people ignored for many years. People has been begging Sega to make a good quality Sonic game instead of them making tons of sucky games at once. Enter Animations 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2010 Final Fantasy died after 10. I mean 9 sucked, but 11 was HORRIBLE. 12 had the most retarded plot in the world and 13 is just pathetic. (Okay, I'll admit I miss the card-captor-sakura thing from 8... ) I dunno, I used to play 1 on my GameBoy for hours while in-between breaks at work. (lol) Hahahaha, and then they made a sequel to 10 and I just gave up on the series all together. I almost cried when they said they were remaking 7. I know it wasn't the best game but it was the only one with 3-d graphics... But still, it deserves more respect than the shitty little PSP.
FranklinX 37 Report post Posted March 22, 2010 I don't see how 12 was retarded. Another nation is trying to take over the world. The story is pretty understand and is very cliche.
Vidian 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2010 I think it all depends on how you define 'sucked' Just because you didn't like it, doesnt mean it sucks :P the fact that you played a very different final fantasy game first could contribute to why you didnt like another. My first FF game was FF9 believe it or not, My least favourite games were FF6 & FF7, two of the most popular... I think if you wanted to know which one 'sucked' you would look at the net income from each game, Information I can't find anywhere :\
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted March 23, 2010 Final Fantasy XIII sucked.

megatron0000 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2010 Personally i didn't like 8 but only because of the Junction system and the way you have to "Draw" you magic from enemies. I didn't really like 10 because of the ending. Don't even get me started on 10-2. I hated 11. 12 was OK but not good. 13 takes too frikin long to get anything done. I mean 25 hours in and I can finally pick my party members and they can learn any job. I like a game that takes a long time and is in depth but this one is so linear it isn't even fun to play. FranklinX 37 Report post Posted March 24, 2010 It was stupid in 8 that you had to buy magic and had a limited amount of magic as items. Magic should never only be an item.
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted April 13, 2010 I play RPGs for their story not the graphics or game play. So their is nothing wrong with past or present FF games.
Enter Animations 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2010 i liked it I loved it. OBVIOUSLY. <----
Yuki_Hikaru 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2010 megatron0000 is right, the Junction system from FF8 actually really bad, Sometimes we still need to reload the junction for each character. For the best storyline I vote for FF6 :alright:
Joko 1 Report post Posted May 22, 2010 I really enjoyed final fantasy 5 for SNES it was the first final fantasy for me too beat. I think i liked 7? not sure if thats the actual one but i liked the one with blitzball or something like that. but other then final fantasy 1,3,5,and i think 7 i didn't really enjoy them. Plus i only have a xbox360 and orginal modded xbox to play final fantasy games. I think it is going down but up in other ways at the same time. graphics are sexy but i still love the original snes grahics and story :)
Random_Guy5507 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 Yes, Final Fantasy is going downhill but their New titles are fun anyway, So sick with your favorite one(s) and wait for a remake if you don't like this changes BTW my favs are: II (no levels ;D) III (Never played the nes one) V (Butz kick ass and best job system in my opinion) VI (best battle system and cool storyline) VII (one day I'll finish that awesome game)
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 I've only played the older ones. One of these days I'll play through em all. To be honest, it seems to me like the FF series is starting to focus entirely on graphics. :\
Random_Guy5507 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 Square-Enix decided that Graphics are better since FF VII and lately the craze for HD graphics; only time will tell if the change is for the good
Joko 1 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 Square-Enix decided that Graphics are better since FF VII and lately the craze for HD graphics; only time will tell if the change is for the good Yeah i agree. Also with FFIV with Butz. That was a amazing game i loved being able to choose between all the jobs and combine them in someways. also i think i'l stick with Star Ocean over Final Fantasy.. i like it better :)
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 Square-Enix decided that Graphics are better since FF VII and lately the craze for HD graphics; only time will tell if the change is for the good This statement it totally untrue. Just because the stories for XII and XIII sucked does not mean they put more focus on the graphics. If you remember correctly, XII's storyline was narrated out of a book they did a good job of explaining things, it was just generic. And XIII had an entire primer and encyclopedia detailing the geography and backgrounds of both Pulse and Cocoon. Plus character backgrounds, although the storyline wasn't strong, that does not mean they put more focus into graphics, just means that the graphic designers abilities exceeded the Lead Designers storyline abilities. :biggrin_002: Star Ocean is fun, except 3's giant ass difficulty gap.
