ThousandFold 2 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 June 10 2010 Initial post I'm making a new ancient ruin style tile set for XP (I may release it for VX as well later after I finish it.) and as of now it looks quite bare. I am having trouble coming up with ideas for what to do in the way of details, so I'd like your guys input as for what I should do. Update - June 11 2010 3:38 AM Central Time - Added an ice auto-tile and added cracked and chipped tile variations. Screenshot - I still can use some more suggestions for stuff to do/edit/add. @Kiriashi - I took your advice and made chipped/cracked pieces. I'll keep working on more as I go. Also, I'm working on the "illegible language" to make the writings/carvings. @Madanchi - I took a look at the images and I like the last two. I've begun to play around with some ideas, hopefully I'll have something to show for it in my next update. June 13 2010 3:03 PM Central time New Screen-shots! Keep up the suggestions/advice! 2 Joko and Kiriashi reacted to this
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 Well for one, the walls look too perfect to be ancient. There should be more texture, and cracks and holes. Maybe some light tiles from where the ceiling caved in. And if it's supposed to be in an icy waste land, consider making.... I dunno.. ice tiles? xD Basically, you need to do a little more work before I can critique, but you already done better than anything I could do. :biggrin_002: I can't wait to see further development. madanchi 18 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 well atm as they are quite plain, its a good canvas to work with but for starters, the wall height is too small, your character is taller :P and have a look at these, then just draw them in a 2d style. Ive posted them to give you inspiration and to see a varied amount of ancient walls :) some ineteresting and maybe crazy wall designs there lol http://historyhotspot.com/Keromikos/part%20of%20athens%20ancient%20wall.jpg http://www.filterforge.com/filters/8021-small.jpg http://www.xolo.nl/textures/wall.jpg http://www.greeklandscapes.com/images/destinations/sifnos/kastro016.jpg http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a177/SilgradTower/TES3/DwemerInteriorTilesetHuge_scr13.jpg http://www.sacred-destinations.com/mexico/images/mexico-city/museum/carved-wall-cc-detritus.jpg 2 Joko and Kiriashi reacted to this

madanchi 18 Report post Posted June 11, 2010 nice :) here, I quickly did this to help you, this was out of my mind, its very basic, no shading or anything, just some bricks placed in different positions - thought it'd give you a betterb idea - oh and btw, you can take this and edit it and make into tiles if you want, afterall i only did this in lesss than 5 mins
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted June 11, 2010 Yeah, the tiles should look a little more like what madanchi posted As for the ice, try to make it little less bland. And add a some tiles that can transition better from ice to stone; because the ice is on top of the stone, right? ;) You should be able to make it where there are spots in the ground where you can see some stone. It would also be useful for puzzles.
ThousandFold 2 Report post Posted June 11, 2010 @kiriashi yeah I've thought about that. but what I was thinking was the ice is where water had seeped into a lowered area and had frozen,im going to play around with making the step be slightly visible but fade out to make it look like the top is slightly translucent. i do think as for the chipping would go there would be a limited amount too because in my game its a drastic climate change that froze everything at once so chipping from frost wedging would be very limited, it would just have a lot of cracks and maybe wind related erosion. @Madanchi I also realize that the whole tile set does look too flat, I'm just having the hardest time trying to figure out how to make it look more like it has texture like the RTP tiles and not just perfectly smooth , any ideas to solve this would be helpful. but I'm also thinking about the whole stone thing but I don't really like the look of stone bricks much, and I was thinking that there was a top layer of concrete over bricks to make it look smoother. Also here's a quick peek at the " illegible language" its just a rough digital sketch (I'll likely just scan the sheet that I'm using to make the language to get a more accurate version.) I won,t give any other letters out because then it would make it more possible to decipher.
Dark Den 4 Report post Posted June 12, 2010 maybe you should also make some cracks in the ice ?
Joko 1 Report post Posted June 12, 2010 also the flooring should probably have cracks too..
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted June 12, 2010 Yes, the flooring needs some shading, maybe light blue on it, to show it is ice. Maybe some cracks, or darker/lighter spots? You can always look at the RTP's snow town to get ideas for the icy floor, or maybe use the Ice cave tileset? Other than that, I'm really like it. But maybe making the blocks in this image: A little more block-y shaped? Straight edges and stuff...? Also, shading will defiantly help the walls look even better. With some touch ups, it'll look really, really good! :) I hope to see more, because I know I would love to use a ruin-like tileset like this in my game C:
