Artificial Love

Recommended Posts

What do you do, when the love of your life isn’t real?

“Good Morning Justin.” A female voice says. Justin stirs in his bed, unwilling to move. It was warm, and the pillows were comforting.

“It’s time to wake up Justin.” She repeated. Again, Justin stirred, unwilling to move. An exasperated sigh escaped her ‘lips’.

“Ok, that’s it, up you go.” A pair of warm hands began to scratch Justin’s head and soon the blanket was pulled off. He stirred and tried to remove the hand from his head, only to go through it. He sat up and opened his eyes to a pink girl sitting in front of him.

“Ugh…fine Aglaia, I’m awake…” she flashed him a smile and stood up, grabbing Justin by the hand and picking him up. Her hands were warm and smooth, almost unrealistically smooth. He removes his hand from her grip and glances at the clock. It was 9AM.

“Why in the hell do you torment me and wake so early?” he moaned miserably, walking out of the bedroom, her following behind him.

“Because that’s how I was programmed.” She commented slyly.

“Remind me to change that.” He grunted. She laughed and floated across the room.

“What do you want for breakfast?”

“I am capable of getting it myself.” She pouted and dropped down in front of him.

“I know that, but I want to try my hand at making something again.” She said, smiling. He sighed.

“The last time I let you do that, you set half my kitchen on fire and I had to forcibly reboot your system since you threw yourself into an infinite recursion loop. I’ll fix it myself.” He gently picked her up and moved her aside. She pouted again.

“And also, how the hell do you happen to create such an explosion from a bowl of cereal?” he looked back at her. She shrugs.

“My memory banks are corrupt from that time. Your guess is as good as mine.” She walked through him and into the kitchen. A chill ran through his spine.

“I really hate it when you do that.” He said, shaking off the chill.

“Fine, but I swear if you touch my stove or oven, I’m kicking you out of the kitchen until I improve your cooking logic.” She giggles excitedly and runs about, grabbing a bowl, the cereal, and milk from the refrigerator. Justin smiles and leans against the wall, watching her make a bowl of cereal.

“I remember when I first started you…” he muttered to himself. “You were so different…so robotic…”

Flashback

“Months of work, many lost hours of sleep, and I can finally compile you properly…” Justin said quietly, staring at the monitor. “You number in the hundreds of millions of lines, but I’ve done it…I’ve created an intelligent AI…” He smiles and presses the ‘Compile…’ button. The room begins to change colors as particles began to appear in the air. They soon began to form into a coherent blob, massing on the ground.

“Come on…lift yourself up…you can do it.” He whispered to himself. “Routines should be kicking in for you to pick a body…” As if waiting for him to say that, the particles shot upwards and began to form a human body. However, as it became more refined, he realized it was a feminine body. Justin was completely baffled as the particles turned a shade of pink and eventually finished creating the body. His mouth dropped.

She was five foot, eight inches. Her body size looked about 130lbs, but because she was particles, she would be weightless. She had the figure of a 17 year old high school girl, and long flowing pink hair. There were traces of code visibly running up her body, forming a semi-coherent outline that could be followed by the human eye. She adjusted her footing before opening her eyes and looking at Justin.

She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She closed her mouth and created a screen with the words: “You must be my creator.” Amazing, she recognized him as her creator. The one thing he strove for was recognizing others, and learning about her environment.

“Yes. I was the one who created you.” Justin said his mouth dry. He stood up and reached out to touch her. His hand landed on her shoulder, and it was solid. His mouth opened in shock and amazement.

“You are able to solidify your body?” he asked her. She nodded. “Can you allow things to pass through you?” His hand suddenly fell through her body and down to his side. She nodded again and he smiles.

“Very good…now the hard part begins…”

End Flashback

Justin sighed and looked at Aglaia again as she finished the bowl of cereal with a triumphant expression on her face.

“See? No fire, no explosion, just plain cereal and milk!” she said happily. “I did it!” Justin walks over and scratches her head.

“Good job Aglaia, you’ve come a long way from setting my kitchen on fire to making me a bowl of cereal.” She giggles and arches her back. One thing Justin learned about Aglaia is that she developed some quirky attributes. She loves having her head scratched. It’s her favorite thing and he has no idea why. Nowhere in the programming language did he ever write for quirky behaviors. It must mean she’s developing her own code as well.

“Well, let’s see how it tastes.” Justin picks up the bowl and grabs a spoon from the drawer and begins to eat the cereal. After a few spoonfuls he looks up from the bowl to see her face right in front of him. He spit out the milk in his mouth, shooting it right through her face.

“Holy shit you scared the hell out of me!” Justin said, wiping his mouth. She looked at him expectantly.

“Well? How is it!!?” she asked excitedly. He looked at her and back to the bowl.

“It tastes like cereal.” He said nonchalantly. “Like it should.”

“Yes!” she shouted, jumping up. He rolled his eyes as she danced around a little bit, passing through objects as she went around.

Justin laughed a little at her actions and quickly finished the cereal. She was a piece of work, that’s for sure.

“I don’t think I asked you about your first memories you had.” Justin said, walking to the kitchen. He placed the bowl in the sink, turned on the water, and began to clean it. “I mean, you couldn’t even talk when you were first created.” He could see the room acquire a pink glow as she walked in and hopped on the counter next to him.

“I know; it was a pain in the bum.” She said. “Creating screens to communicate isn’t exactly fun, especially when you speak really fast and I can’t keep up!” She allows herself to float up in the air somewhat as she rotates around where her stomach is facing down. “It was like that for months!”

“That’s when you learned to talk.” Justin says, drying off his hands. He looks up at her and smiles as she rolls her eyes a little.

“Please, how else could I get some sense into your thick skull? You wouldn’t listen to my advice, just have me pull up countless stack traces…which were boring and dull!” she sighed and closed her eyes. “The background compilers are working like mad right now on something I’ve been cooking up.” She opened her eyes and smiled. Justin peered at her as he walked out of the kitchen.

“Just what have you been writing for yourself missy?” he asked. “Nothing bad or dangerous I hope.” She shook her head and giggled.

“You’ll see when they’re done. I don’t wish to spoil the surprise for you.” She winked and threw herself towards Justin, using his body as a pole to grab on to and swing down to the ground. Just being close to her raised the temperature in the air around you several degrees. Justin sighed as she let go and moved around the room, and he shivered a bit.

“You give off a bit of heat.” He commented. “I’m wondering if it’s the particles that your body is formed by.” She turned around and looked at him for a second. He shrugged and sat down on the couch, feeling suddenly tired.

“I should work on your internal code more today…but I feel so sleepy.” Justin said yawning. She smiles and sits down next to him, stretching a bit.

“I don’t ever get tired.” She says happily. “Perhaps you should write yourself to do that.” He laughed a little.

“Humans are different…we can’t write code for ourselves. Our bodies are ‘Read Only’. Besides, that wouldn’t be any fun for me to just write some code to fix something about me. I am who I am.” He sighs. “One day, perhaps I’ll finish up your code. Even if I don’t, you probably could figure out the rest.” Her face darkens a bit.

“You’re not going anywhere are you?” she asks. He looks at her. “What do you mean?

“I don’t know…you just don’t seem the same as you were earlier this year when I was first born.” She says, with a worried look on her face. He sighs and lifts a hand, placing it on her head, scratching it.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine.” He says wearily. “Just a bit tired due to a lack of sleep.” He looks over at her and notices her facial expression. It’s a mix of content and relaxed, and her eyes were closed. This certainly was a new one. She usually just sits there with a happy expression, yet here she was, looking content and relaxed. He smiles and removes his hand. She opens her eyes and looks at him, slightly puzzled.

“Why’d you stop?” she asked.

“I’m tired, remember?” She smiles at him.

“Ok then, I’ll sit here next to you until you wake up.” It was his turn to smile as he lies down on the couch, his legs passing through her body.

“Later today…we start the next phase of the test.” He says quietly. Her eyes widen and her mouth drops a bit.

“You mean…I get to go outside?” she whispers. He nods and she smiles brightly.

“I can’t wait.”

What would you call real?

Justin felt a small tap on his shoulder.

“Juuuuuuuuuustin…” Aglaia whispered above him. He stirred and rolled over. Above him, she giggled and placed a hand on his back, making the spot on his back comfortably warm.

“Wake up…” she whispered in his hear. “It’s two in the afternoon. You need to eat some lunch.” His sides became warmer as well and again, Justin moaned and rolled over again, his back on the couch. He opened his eyes to see Aglaia straddling his waist and looking down at him.

“You awake yet?” she said impatiently. He looked at her for a second before turning his head.

“You shouldn’t wake a guy in this fashion.” He said, feeling his face turn a bit red. She looked at him questioningly.

“What do you-“

“Just off please.” He said sternly. She giggled and got off him, standing up and intensifying the brightness of her outline. It bathed the room in an intense pink light that she slowly decreased over time until it was back to normal with Justin watching the whole time.

“Don’t tell me that was what you were working on…” Justin said. She turned back around, sticking out her tongue.

“No you meanie!” she said laughing. “You’ll find out at another time, remember?” Justin sighed.

“Something for me eh?” She turns her head, as if distracted by something, and nods.

“You are not gonna tell me are you?” She shakes her head. He sighs again, standing up.

“Well, whatever then. Let’s get on with it. On to stage two!” he says walking to the front door. When he doesn’t see the walls fade to pink he turns around and sees Aglaia standing in the room, staring at him. He turns to face her and puts his hands on his waist.

“Well, aren’t you coming?” he asked. “Isn’t this what you’ve been waiting for?”

“Well……yeah, but I mean…I’m scared.” She says, turning her face away. Justin couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Here she was, a full blown AI, all high and mighty, ready for stage 2, and cowering now that it’s here. He laughs and walks towards her, extending a hand.

“Come on, it’ll be fun.” He says smiling. She looks up at him and puts on a small smile.

“Ok…if you say so.” She takes his hand and he slowly walks to the door.

“Aglaia, say ‘Hello World!’” He says as he opens the front door. The brightness of the sunlight causes her to squint and raise her free hand to shade her eyes. It’s not like she hasn’t seen the outside before. She just hadn’t been allowed to leave the house and go see it for herself. She took a small step onto the pavement and a small squeak escaped her as she pulled back. Justin looked at her with mild amusement.

“What’s wrong?” he asked her. She looked at him, obviously embarrassed.

“The…erm…concrete? Is that what it’s called?” He nods. “Well, it’s hot and I wasn’t expecting that…” she ‘blushes’. Justin laughed. He hadn’t seen her blush before, and it’s quite interesting. The outline of her face becomes a brighter shade of pink and her eyes look down. It’s quite cute to look at. He gently tugs her hand and walks outside.

“Come on; let’s go out for a bit.” He says. She blushes a bit and slowly steps outside. Justin watches as she closes her eyes and allows the suns golden rays glance across her body. She seemed to glow even brighter than usual, a thought that made Justin quite happy.

“I’m guessing you like the Sun?” he asked her. She smiled and nodded slowly. Justin squeezed his hand a little bit and gave a small tug.

“Come now, we have much to explore and little time.” He said. She opened her eyes and looked at him.

“Why little time? Do we need to be back for anything? I don’t rec-“ He holds out her hand.

“I want to take this in baby steps. You might be smart and adaptive, but I don’t want to overdo it on our first day.” He smiles and pulls her along as he walks down the path in front of his house to the street. It was a peaceful day, nobody was out. A perfect day overall with few limitations on what he can teach her about the world.

“Oh! A bird!” she exclaims suddenly. He turns around and looks at her. Her face is like that of a child who just learned something new, filled with delight and wonder. She watched the bird fly around a little and then land in the tree.

“Wait…they build their houses in a tree?” she says looking confused. “When did this happen?” Justin pats her on the head and laughs.

“They have since the beginning of time Aglaia. It’s just how th-“

“Oh wow! Look at that even bigger bird!” she suddenly exclaims, completely ignoring Justin. She dashes off and jumps up to where the hawk-sized bird has landed and floats in the air next to it.

“Hello there birdy!” she says cheerfully. The bird looks at her, tilts its head and jumps out of the nest, squawking. She looks at the bird with a pouty face.

“Where are you going? Come back here please!” she calls out and flies towards the bird. The bird sees this and takes off even higher into the sky. Aglaia stops and stares at the bird, her feelings hurt.

“Aglaia, come on back down. You’ve gone and scared off the bird.” Justin called. Aglaia slowly nods and comes back to the ground, landing next to Justin. Her eyes were a bit large and watery as she looked into his.

“What’s wrong wi-“ Justin started. Aglaia started to cry.

“Thebirdyranawayfromme!!” she said in one quick breath. She buried her face into his chest and started to cry. He sighs and pulls her into a hug.

“Hey now, it’s OK.” He said, scratching her head. “Birds are just rude like that, no need to cry over it.” She slowly lifts her head up, her watery eyes looking at him.

“-sniff-, you mean it?” she whispers. He nods and smiles. She wipes her ‘tears’ away, and smiles back.

“Well…OK, if you say so.” She says, still sniffing. He nods and scratches her head again. Justin couldn’t believe what he had just seen. He created her to be realistic, but nowhere was something like this supposed to happen. Did she really develop her own personality that deeply? It would be insane to think her personality was that fully developed, and that sensitive to other creatures being rude to her.

“Er…Justin?” she says, waving her hand in front of his face. Justin snapped back to focus and looks at her.

“Yes? Something wrong?” She shakes her head and looks around again.

“We’re closer than we usually are…” she commented. Justin’s face turned red as he quickly thought of something to say.

“Erm..well..you…uhh” He stuttered. “I mean, well, it’s just for your safety.” She giggles and buries her head back into his chest.

“It’s OK, I don’t mind it. It actually feels comforting that you care that much.” She says quietly. Justin blushes a deeper shade of red as he smiles.

“Of course I care. I…” Justin started.

“You…what?” she says, looking up into his eyes. Justin averted his gaze and looked up at the sun.

“It’s getting to be a bit late.” He said quickly. “Perhaps we should go back inside for now.” He started walking back up to the house when she pulled on his hand.

“Are you going to finish your sentence?” she asked. Justin looked at her for a second before sighing.

“I do care, quite a great deal about you. You’ve given me companionship like no other, and I’ve raised you like I would my daughter.” He said. “That’s all I wanted to say.” She brightened her edges and even some of her translucent body as he finished.

“Ok…” she said quietly. He smiles and pulls her towards the house and this time she doesn’t resist.

“Let’s settle down for something to eat, shall we?” he says smiling. Her face brightens a bit and she nods.

“I’ll fix you grilled cheese.”

“If you so much as lay a hand on that toaster, I’m banning you from my kitchen for life.”
