Should the date for Independence day be changed?

Recommended Posts

July 4th 1776 the United States gain its' freedom from the British! However black people were not free. Indians did not get equal treatment. In the early to mid 1900s there was segregation against African Americans, Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, and Jews. We did not have complete freedom until the 60s.

Personally I do not celebrate Independence Day. My people and many other races were not free on July 4th. I refuse to celebrate a day that is only for one race of people(not saying all whites are racist). The date for Independence Day should be changed for all races of people because we are now all free. We all have equal rights and liberties in this country. We should have a day for all of us.

Dude, it has nothing to do with white people being free, it was the united states being free. That included African Americans; and you know what? They had it much better off in the US then everywhere else at that time anyways.

Independence Day is a day to celebrate the United States becoming a liberated country; you shouldn't turn it into a race thing.

The is that not all races were free in this country on that day. Only one group of people was free. This is not against white people. This is for all races to have one day to celebrate complete independence.

Thats true... not to sound like a secret non-white thing here, but do you guys realize that the only people who can truly be called "Americans" are Natives? -- Nearly every race was brought here or kicked out by force, except the whites (again no racist intended).

and when coming to "Independence Day", It should mean freedom of everyone... not just America -- for which they would say only "True Americans" (whites) represent America.

so RKO, I agree with you mate... and its not a race thing (for the last time lolz)

Really, its a holiday to represent the defeat of the British, and the establishment of America as an independent country, it has nothing to do with any people, or racism, or slaver, or even individual freedom. its about the freedom of an estate, a country, regardless of the state of individual freedom. I couldn't care less about it though, as America is a crap hole now anyways.

WKO, why do you think that it has to be celebrating African American's freedom? There's a time to celebrate that; the fourth of July is for celebrating our country's freedom as a whole. It's rather silly to not participate in the fun just because there isn't a special part of the 4th that recognizes African Americans. There isn't one for Caucasian Americans.

It's just celebrating our independence as a nation.

Besides you have your own time to celebrate your freedom like everyone does. So dont get all mad.

And its freedom for the country and not race specific. :)

The country was free, but not everyone in it. We need a day for every race of people to celebrate their Independence and freedoms. Not every person was free on this day.

The shortest month of the year. That's an insult. <_<

In matter of fact it should not be about black people in one month. We should have a month about all of our Nation's freedoms. That includes the whites, blacks, natives, asians, hispanics, etc.

Technically we didn't defeat the british. At the time we were British too, thats why in the poem paul revere it should say , " The Regulars are coming!" in stead of British. Regulars in the fashion of regular military, however because the poem is a childrens poem, people say British so the kids will understand it more. As for RATED-RKOFRANKLIN's opinion, I believe he has a point, but then you must think, Britan outlawed slavery in 1803, and the civil war started in 1861. If America would've lost the revolution, I believe that slavery would've been abolished in america much sooner.

The British did not outlaw slavery completely. They outlawed the slave trade.

you guys are starting to annoy me. like I stated above. Independence day has nothing to do with an individuals freedom. they couldn't care less about who, individual, was free. it was about the country. stop getting so caught up in slavery, its all gone and past, or the slavery America knew anyways. Its Independence day on the 4th. deal with it.

At least show us some respect. What you said is very disrespectful and borderline racist. You have a lot of guts to tell someone to deal with it. This is about an individual's freedom. A day that only ONE group of people was free in this country. This entire country was not free. How can you say it does not matter who was free, and it was about the country? That's a damn piss poor contradiction. All groups of people make this nation.

you want me to go racist? what I said was NOT borderline racist. Independence day was for the liberation FROM THE BRITISH!!!!! no slavery, it was specifically FROM THE BRITISH! freakin A. I don't get why you're so picky about this. It didn't matter who was free, and who was a slave, it was about being free FROM THE BRITISH! I can't stress that enough. I'm not saying that I don't care about slavery, as its one of my highest concerns when it comes to global issues, I'm saying that back then, when we won the revolutionary war, Independence day was when we became an independent country, not associated with Britain. It has nothing to do with slavery... good Lord.

Can I end this by saying it doesn't matter what nationality or race you are as long as your not green? This is becoming a fruitless argument.

Hey hey guys, do not turn this into a flame war. :nono4:

I don't think it would be right for me to lock this topic or anything like that since it's in Mature Discussion, but I can say this:

Be mature. Everyone gets to post their opinions. And that's all they are, opinions.

Though I only agree with one of you, I think both of you need to calm down. Okay? ^_^

Independence day is celebrated as the day that the 13 colonies became the United States of America, a separate country from the Brits. It has NOTHING to do with 'freedom', other than the colonies being freed from being part of England.

It has NOTHING to do with race, creed, sex, or bubblegum flavor. Get over the racist bullshit, all ready. Everyone bitches about black slaves? Sorry, but whites and jews were slaves long before hte blacks, jews were slaves longer than any other breed of human (and they DON'T bitch about it).

Further, RKO, you saying 'My People' and hten saying racism is a bad thing is hypocritical. Pick one side, racist or not, and stick to it. You stay on the fence long enough, and you're gonna get your ass impaled on it.

As for freedom as a whole, the country STILL isn't free. I don't know where you get your info from, but even since the 60's, there is no true freedom. Gays cannot be free without persecution. Nor can cultists, Though their religion is bonafied.

I don't see the point of this debate, other than to make it a thing against all the 'white people' from the past. It is bullshit to bring it up. Let dead dogs lie, and give it up already.

One last note, the meaning of 'Independence Day':

An Independence Day is an annual celebration commemorating the anniversary of a
nation's assumption of independent statehood, usually after ceasing to be a
colony or part of another state, more rarely after the end of a military
occupation.

In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July,
is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence
on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Crack a damn book sometime, and maybe you'll find the TRUE meaning of something.

Independence and Freedom is the same thing. Not everyone in this country had independence. Women had no rights. Blacks were slaves. Jews and Irishmen were segregated.

This topic is not against white people of any time. How about you read the first post to understand the message? Let me make it simple for you. We should have a day when all groups of people in this country had independence.

First, Independence vs. Freedom:

The meaning of independence for Independence Day is as stated: for the country against England.

Second:

The sentence is from an old adage. Read more.

Third:

You can't debate if you haven't a leg to stand on. You want a day for 'your' people? You have Black History Month, BET, and a number of other things exclusive to 'your' race. You claim it is a 'white man' holiday? Even if it WAS true (and I don't htink it is), that is ONE day vs. the month AND television channel, not to mention countless other things, such as the NAACP, that 'your' people have. I wasn't intending to insult your intelligence. I am just sick of 'your' racism on this site.

P.S. I am only being racist in the sarcastic sense, hence the quote marks and italics.

RKO, this is the mature discussion section. When someone says something mean, they are unleashing their opinion, not flaming you. There was not threat either, that was an old saying. There have been rude comments, but I'm afraid you're going to have to put up with that here.

Please continue the conversation only if it is going to be about Independence Day.

On topic:

Yes, independence and freedom are very similar words, but independence day is NOT ABOUT A GROUP OF PEOPLE's freedom. It's not about black people being free. It's not about Jews being free. It is not about white people being free. It's about our country, being INDEPENDENT of other countries, or in other words, the Brits.

Doesn't that make sense? It's not the people's freedom we celebrate, it's our country's freedom.

My racism? First off I have not brought any racism to this site. You're lying and flaming again. Secondly this topic is not only about blacks. My statement about freedom in the 60s was about race.

This has nothing to do with anything against white people. This is about all races of people having a day for one another.

I'm not a big fan Black History Month. Why? Because it is so biased. We rarely hear about the white people who were civil right activist. I have respect for MLK, but a lot people see him as the only one. There were plenty of people before him and without then he would not been successful. We don't need Black History Month. We need a month for all races of people to celebrate with one another. Let's not give one race a month and forget about the others. We all need a day for all races independence and a month.

You intended to insult me and threaten. You said you what said. You should have thought about it before you posted it.

The phrase 'my people' segregrates your race from every other race. And you cannot say it doesn't, because of what was said thereafter. Ergo, logically, a racist statement. Since it is the truth, it cannot be considered flaming.

Okay, this topic is getting out of hand. Independence Day is a day to celebrate the freedom that you have as an American Citizen of the United States of America, not because of your race or what happened 200 years ago. British abolished slavery in 1801, and it was ILLEGAL for any person in British lands to buy, own, or trade slaves. Most slaves who lived in America fled to Britain as they new that they would be freed under British law. Please do not use your ancestors suffering as an excuse to slander a holiday which to Americans is a day to celebrate freedom and equality, no matter your race, religion, gender, sexuality or creed. I am going to lock this topic to prevent any more arguments from arising as I do not want RMXPUnlimited to become a place where people argue over things which do not need to be argued over in the first place. If you have a problem with my decision, by all means, PM me and I will talk with you in private to sort things out.

Have a nice day,

Isaac

I have one thing to add.

The Debate and Mature Discussion section is a place for everyone to share their opinions, and to gain insight on a particular subject. This site as a whole is a place where we all have a common interest: creativity.

This site is our portal to envision, create share. We can't discuss and share our common interest unless we do so with a kind attitude; that's what makes this site so special. This is something we need to preserve on this site, and therefore I ask that everyone keeps everything in this section of the forum where it is.

Otherwise, our site is worthless.

*hugs everyone* ^~^
