OverlordMao 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 I'm using a somewhat-old Toshiba computer (maybe 2, 3, or 4 years old. Not sure on exact age) and it seems to be getting hotter and hotter to the touch each day. First, everything I can understand about my computer. The system is a Microsoft Windows XP, Home edition, version 2002, Service Pack 3 (As far as I can tell, that's everything system-wise). The Max GB my computer has is 37.2, but it is currently at 7.94 GBs. That's all I understand about my computer. Now, the actually problem. I've started to notice that my computer has taken slightly longer to load programs, and even turn on. Now it takes almost 30 minutes for my computer to load. By the time it has loaded, however, it's almost to hot to touch (slightly anyway, I can use it, but often only after I get a small bag of ice covered in a towel). Anyone know whats wrong with my computer and what I can do to help it?
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 What type of surface is your laptop on?
OverlordMao 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 What type of surface is your laptop on? I keep my laptop on my laptop's case. Why do you ask?
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 Thats probably why its heating up then. Its harder for hot air to escape when the surface is soft. Try putting it on a hard surface like a table and see how hot it is. It should be better for it. Make sure the vents are not blocked. I would try to blow into the vents to clean any dust out of it. 1 FranklinX reacted to this
clone1018 4 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 OK. (This is only if your fan is easily accessible) Remove any panels from the back of your laptop. You will see a fan. Remove the screws that attach it. Clean everywhere around it. Fix and turn on. I did this on my laptop and I found a 1CM thick heap of dust (1cm thick 10 wide)that was in between my fan and its external ventage. 1 FranklinX reacted to this
FranklinX 37 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 You only have 37 GB! Damn that's not much.
OverlordMao 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 You only have 37 GB! Damn that's not much. Your telling me. :( On an important note, Changing the surface seems to have helps the computer slightly and I'm not sure where the Fan is located. However, now it seems to be lagging a lot more than before, and even took longer to turn on! I'm about to start a Virus Scan just to be on the safe side, so we'll see what happens after it. rgangsta 43 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 This might be stupid but my friend used to put his school books in his freezer then put them under his laptop. I wouldn't recommend this because it might ruin your books but if you've got a book you don't want, then give it a shot. :P
madanchi 18 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 the book will just heat with very fast and be allw et and not cool the laptop down much - in theory anyway :P and if its 3-4 years old, it might be just the age, or it might be hot weather recently, get a laptop pad (that has fans in) it whould help a lot, but like said above, clean your fan it will be thick with dust. sometimes the only way to get to the fan is to literally unscrew everything and open your entire laptop case (i ahd to). I suggest not to do that if you dont know what your doing. so i suggest you get some canned air to blow out all the dust (and its far easier this way) :)
clone1018 4 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 God no. Just do what I said. Ready what I said. How do you not know were your fan is. It basically breathes out lava air.
Ecowolfsteen 14 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 I don't have any useful tips for you except the ones above, but I used to have an old HP and it would get so hot it burned my skin. It eventually blew up....:(
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 Be careful with the can of air. Sometimes moisture comes out of it like water. Before you do it unplug your laptop and take battery out. Let it sit for a bit before using. I made this mistake with a desktop and lets just say it looked like the 4th of July(exaggerating). Yea it could be because of age and the fan is usually in the back. Hint: Blows out air.
OverlordMao 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 I cleared out all the dust in the fan, and it's starting to work faster. I found where the heat seems to be generated, though. I think its the Motherboard. I found dust there, cleaned it out by blowing at it (I don't have a Can of Air), and tried to turn it on. First attempt at turning it on, it said that a file was missing or corrupt and couldn't work without it, but then started to work "Ok" at the second attepmt to turn it on. It still lags at times, but this is the current status.
madanchi 18 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 nice:) so its working faster and is it cooler? and did you open your case up? and it wouldnt be your motherboard, its more likely to be your cpu
OverlordMao 0 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 Its working slightly faster, but it doesn't seem to be getting significantly cooler. And, while I'm not sure what it was, I can tell you it was big, square-shaped, green with several smaller boxes on it, and located the the center of my computer's thingy (technical term).
rgangsta 43 Report post Posted July 19, 2010 It's good news that it's working fast. As for that box, I don't know what it is.
madanchi 18 Report post Posted July 20, 2010 a big green square with other smaller squares on that O.o erm, might be your cpu or gpu, but no componants has extra squares on top of it XD and the 'thingy' is your motherboard ;)
