Ecowolfsteen, You do realize that its going to take a lot of your resources and time to start up a forum

Your going to have to abandon or postpone your prior engagements

I'm still waiting on my sprites u know

Your gonna need to dedicate most of your time into it

Also, not everybody can dedicate their time to more than one forum, like myself

therefore, you are competition with every other rmxp/ game making forum available

Its like if you are trying to make a game console to compete with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo right now

Its very unlikely but possible

In other words

Your going to need to advertise using a $hitload of money to get your name out

your going to need to collect a Mother load of Resources that people are looking for

and your going to need a ton of features other rmxp sites and forums don't have

Estimate Cost and Time

approximately 5 years

$650,000 advertising

$120-$1000 Hosting

This is mainly because there is already full fledged competition

Not necessarily. It does depend on your goals... If you want to be competitive and have the majority of activity on your site then perhaps. But I've seen websites start up and thrive on nothing more than just a great community. An example is Rpgm.org which became very popular in a short amount of time and only closed down in the end because the admin thought it was time.

And stop scaring him  The more people starting up their sites the more people benefit. Competition benefits all :)

A wee bit early for google adsense I think. Those guys tried scamming me, actually. I got a letter from google offering me $50 free adwords, but once the $50 was used it, it would start charging from by bank or whatever. Therefore I'm boycotting adwords. Its not like us students can afford such things anyways.

Thanks for that Chief. I know what I have right now won't do anything but I am still trying to find a good place to host my website. I found 2 that use PHB, Yay! Right now Lefora is just a measly little thing that is taking care of me now. I can't do paid hosting because I'm broke  So, free hosting will be what I'm going to do for now. I really liked your list that you typed up for me and I WILL be keeping all of that stuff in mind. Thanks guys.

Eco, instead of finding a place to sign up for a free forum, just get free web hosting, and install the forum onto it. it will run better that way, and most of the time, that means no ads.

Sounds like a pretty good deal. You just have to commit to their forum and you can host your own, and even buy your own domain name with virtual money. Cool. I'll look into it more. Also looking at the old site to see what possibilities there are.

eco, forumer isnt good at all. like I said you should do, multiple times ive stated this, go find just regular web hosting, free or paid, and install a forum onto it. it will work way better, faster, and most of the time, it means no ads.

Forumer is good Cheif. I've been toying with it for a day now and have had no problems.

Site is up. It is very limited right now. You can sign up and post a little. Broken is making me a logo. Have Fun!

/facepalm... Eco, you may like forumer, but the option I told you of, installing a forum on a webhost, is much better... really.

Eco, you double posted for no good reason. (I'm not talking about the duplicate, that was obviously an accident.) Please try to use the edit post next time. There wasn't even an hour between those posts. >.< I've told you this before.

The forum index looks really cool. The blue skin just works. I recommend moving the register button over next to the login button.

Also, just a bit of advice, Chief knows a lot about making websites. You should listen to him if you want to learn more yourself. ^_^

Yeah, using a host specifically designed for forums is a bad idea as you will not be given the ability to perform backups of your data, unless you pay the piker of course. Try Byethost. No there is no previous experience of the service from me but it does look promising on paper. At least you can download everything and transfer it to another host if you are not sold on the provider any longer.

Can someone explain how to install forum software?

Are you doing it for him? What forum software?

Most software will come with instructions.

In general, the basic procedure is to upload all the files. Next there will be an installer which is run through the browser (ex: forums/install/index.php). Or there will be a configuration file you have to edit. You will need to setup a database and have the username, password and host (usually 'localhost') ready as well. That's pretty much it.
