Knuckles 1 Report post Posted August 29, 2010 Actually no. He never asked and I dont have the software. I was just wondering. Could software be loaded into forumer? Forumer from my last visit, which is dated back at least 2 years, is just like the current host servicing RM For You. It's dedicated only to the forum software they provide and thus you have no access to the file system (like FTP or a web-based file manager). In this case they most likely disable downloadable backups as well.

Which is really really bad if something happens or you want to move to a different host >.< Byethost is pretty good actually, I've used them before (am now with Blackbound actually) and haven't had any problems, plus several SMF (Simple Machine Forum) installations on there. Quite happy so far.

Quite happy so far. Byethost is indeed a very very good free host. However we are not with them right now thanks to a rather generous donation by our current host. Our current host gave us a prepaid Priemium plan. SMF is also a very good piece of forum software. Power wise its very very close to IPB. (its really only mebby a year or two behind) It is the forum software I have been using on all of my current sites. (count- 4)
Chief 30 Report post Posted September 2, 2010 (edited) SMF < phpBB ... My opinion anyways, and Ive used every major forum software to date. Maybe I'm a fanboy, I dunno, but Ive used phpBB since one of its earliest releases. I love it. SMF seems a bit too dull. Blackbound 4 Report post Posted September 2, 2010 Ive used PHPBB2 and PHPBB3. I was introduced into SMF while I tried working with the excessively complex PHPBB3 SMF 2.0 RC3 I was able to dive into in a matter of seconds. You dont need to know any PHP/HTML/Javascript/CSS code to work with it, and regardless of whether you know it or not, you can add a spoiler tag to the forum in about 3 clicks. SMF admin panel -> Packages -> Download Packages -> [browse] -> (ctrl F - Spoiler) - Download next to Spoiler Tag -> Install Mod -> install No PHP to work with, just a few (ok mebby a lil over a half dozen) clicks. Also... ya dont like the mod? Uninstall is even faster Admin Panel -> Packages -> Uninstall Mod -> Uninstall (next to the mod you want to remove) Ive never got PHPBB3 to do that >.<' However there is one thing I would like to note about SMF - There is a line you need to change to get rid of the "Ugly avatar Scrollbars" You have to change the line from Auto to Hidden. This gets rid of the scrollbars. SMF has its own built in Debugger so if you are gonna install something and you are not sure if it will work with your current mods, download and hit install mod... but dont hit install yet. SMF will either give you a green go ahead saying the mod itself is safe to install, or a red "Holdup" I have seen alot of things you can do in a SMF forum without the aid of php knowlege. If you actually do have PHP knowhow then you can do alot more with SMF.
Chief 30 Report post Posted September 2, 2010 phpBB is in no way complex, lol. I suppose its a matter of the time and resources youre willing to put into it, but since ive always psent a lot of time on forums and the like, I know phpBB like the back of my hand. the permissions are the only thing that get me every time, but I soon relearn it after the install. wyatt 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2010 From past experience, use "RMXP" in your domain name and it will boost your Google ranking massively (RMXPUnlimited is tiny compared to other sites and yet it is the top non-enterbrain site on Google!)

Marked 197 Report post Posted September 23, 2010 From past experience, use "RMXP" in your domain name and it will boost your Google ranking massively (RMXPUnlimited is tiny compared to other sites and yet it is the top non-enterbrain site on Google!) Tiny in terms of activity? I think in terms of pageviews and visitors we're ok. We do struggle with keeping members however. I'm really not a fan of the ads. Are they there on purpose, or did the host place them there? By the donation page I assume its on purpose. You're never going to make any money off them, not till you're REALLY active. At the moment, if you have ads like that, its way more harmful because they're just going to annoy members. If the site is moving like Kage said, the current board should be turned offline (the current forum announcement thing is pretty unnoticeable, I wouldnt have noticed if I didnt read Kage's post). I bookmarked it and all :sam:
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted September 23, 2010 But what about advertising on other sites for publicity as opposed to having ads on this site for the sites income.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted September 23, 2010 But what about advertising on other sites for publicity as opposed to having ads on this site for the sites income. At first its a good idea to have no ads to attract members. As you get more popular it will make it easier to have ads because you will get way more views on them ads and get more money. When there are more members they will realize it will help out such a big site pay for hosting and they wont care as much.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted September 23, 2010 So... ads are good. xD Don't we have ads for non members?
Ecowolfsteen 14 Report post Posted September 23, 2010 Heres the deal: The site just moved to paid hosting thanks to Kage_Kazumi. (So awesome...) The first post will be updated rather soon to specify all of the nifty details.
Marked 197 Report post Posted September 24, 2010 But what about advertising on other sites for publicity as opposed to having ads on this site for the sites income. I think you're confused with what I meant by 'ads'. Ads are random advertisements (usually google adsense) that are used to make money. Heres the deal: The site just moved to paid hosting thanks to Kage_Kazumi. (So awesome...) The first post will be updated rather soon to specify all of the nifty details. I knew Kage would be behind this :P I like the sites name actually. EDIT: I get an error from this link: http://community.vgsarchive.net/ Perhaps you're redirecting to the same page? I've done that and got the same error before.
Broken Messiah 20 Report post Posted September 24, 2010 Same error for me too. At first i thought it was because the site is temporarlty unavailable, but Kagezumi told me I was a Admin there so that shouldnt be, Marked's idea makes for sense.
Ecowolfsteen 14 Report post Posted September 24, 2010 Yes, Broken you are an Admin there because you were a MOD on RMDB. We don't want to start making people MODs yet. The site had some recent downtime, Kage was working on it, It is fixed now.
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted September 24, 2010 I knew Kage would be behind this :P I like the sites name actually. Actually I decided to help Eco and Combine my idea I have been meaning to do. Having someone their to ask questions about the site motivates me to work on it and get it up ASAP. As for the name I just thought of Game Developer for obvious reasons and the Underground part to signify hobby game makers. EDIT: I get an error from this link: http://community.vgsarchive.net/ Perhaps you're redirecting to the same page? I've done that and got the same error before. Actually I meant to edit the index.php for the main URL, but someone how I ended up in the forum folder and did not realize what I had done. And yes that's what I did had it redirecting to the same page.

Marked 197 Report post Posted October 2, 2010 Who's website is this? Eco started the topic, but you and him are managers and Broken Messiah is the only admin?
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted October 6, 2010 Who's website is this? Eco started the topic, but you and him are managers and Broken Messiah is the only admin? Eco's and Mine. I always assign Root Admin as Managers and then have Admins. Comes in handy when the Managers (or root admins) can't be around. MINOR UPDATE The forum is down due to an error. Should be up later tonight. Also the site and forum will also be intagrated.
Marked 197 Report post Posted October 6, 2010 Oh I see. I assumed managers well below admins, I really should have figured that one out. What site software are you going to use? Joomla or perhaps IPB's own content system? If its joomla I'm curious as to how you're going to do it since we have our own semi-unique system here :P

And I was going to have someone custom integrate it. Of course if you could use some extra cash I would pay for any help you may offer me...perhaps save me a few hundred $$$$
Marked 197 Report post Posted October 7, 2010 Since we've known each so long I don't think it would be appropriate to accept payment for it. The only circumstance where I would find it appropriate is if the payment went directly to isaacsol to help with hosting. I would also give you a full overview of it so you know what you're getting, but at the least it is complete user integration and also has a global variable which you can use in any joomla component to access any field of the ibf_members table. Very useful when writing member orientated components in joomla. Send me a PM if you're interested and we'll talk about it some more.
