Researchers Zero in on Protein That Destroys HIV

The finding could lead to new TRIM5a-based treatments that would knock out HIV in humans, said senior researcher Edward M. Campbell, PhD, of Loyola University Health System.

 

Campbell and colleagues report their findings in an article featured on the cover of the Sept. 15, 2010 issue of the journal Virology, now available online.

 

In 2004, other researchers reported that TRIM5a protects rhesus monkeys from HIV. The TRIM5a protein first latches on to a HIV virus, then other TRIM5a proteins gang up and destroy the virus.

This is great news for HIV carriers. Hopefully they have truly found the cure they've been looking for. To be honest I do not feel sorry for any HIV carrier who gotten the virus by sleeping around with many different people without protection. There are many risks out there. No one should give themselves the ultimate risk.

This would be a huge step for medical science. HIV being stamped out would be great. Granted, odds are, those with the full blown AIDS would have little luck from this, but at least this would save a huge number of lives.

its a great find for science :) but eventually, it will become immune to the TRIM5a, like all viruses do with cures - or is that diseases lol?

your right viruses do change and like it wasn't bad enough waht one cell(or waht ever its called) changes they can give the change to any other virus cell(?) witch comes near the changed one (hope this makes sense :sweatdrop:

Wow, I hadn't heard of this yet. It makes me really excited. It seems like our generation is on the verge of breaking through so many diseases, like MS and now possibly HIV. It really gives me hope for the future.

All diseases, virus, bacteria can change and mutate, so can we, unfortunately there are lives lost while we wait to adapt. But there is hope, maybe we can do away with HIV from ever being spread again.

Rated you are right in that people should be a lot more careful regarding this issue then they have been. But I don't think they realize that the consequence could be a long painful death.

 

There was this one guy in my city charged with a whole bunch of murder charges because he had knowingly slept with a bunch of people without protection just to get back at them for something. Now that's just wrong.

 

I feel terrible for the victims though and for all the victims of rape who have to deal with this as a consequence.
