Kadyaknight 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) (Not sure if this is in the right place but here goes.) I know it's possible to publish a game made with RPG Maker programs, bigfishgames has a few of them, Mostly I was wondering if and what type of scripts, sprites and other resources, made by people other than myself, would be, or are, legally applicable for use within a project that is planned to be published and sold for money. I am really wondering if this is true for certain scripts that I already have: Ccoa's UMS Slanted bars by SephirothSpawn Blizzard's Gradient bars I was also wondering if they'res a side view or active battle system that is legal for use in a publication. Any and all input and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Edited September 16, 2010 by Kadyaknight
rgangsta 43 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 Sadly, I think that all resource creators would want compensation for their work. I may be wrong, though. I'll do a bit of searching.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 You would have to sort that out with the creators of the resources. By publishing do you mean like making money off of it or completely free to the public?
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 To use all those scripts for commercial reasons, you must pay a 20$ fee for each title (game) you plan to use the script with. I asked Ccoa and some people about it as well.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 If you are releasing a game that's free, then you just have to credit them unless they say otherwise. If you are selling your game, then you should ask the authors of the scripts/graphics about payment if you aren't sure they won't mind just being credited, which usually is the case. All they ask for in the first place is that you credit them. Some authors don't even care about being credited.

By publishing do you mean like making money off of it or completely free to the public? The idea would be to sell it for money, but only if I got enough positive feedback for it.(Side note, not even close to being done.) To use all those scripts for commercial reasons, you must pay a 20$ fee for each title (game) you plan to use the script with. I asked Ccoa and some people about it as well. Thanks for the info Crimson. And that would be 20$ to the owner of each script for each game I publish, yes? I wouldn't even think about making a game, be it free or to sell without crediting anyone and everyone who's resources were used in it's production. Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 I wasn't accusing you of anything, silly. And that thing about 20 dollars is not true. It all depends on the author.

CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 Thanks for the info Crimson. And that would be 20$ to the owner of each script for each game I publish, yes? Let's say you wanted to use Ccoa's Message script for a game you planned on selling to people. You'd contact her and pay her 20$ for that one title. If you ended up making another title with the same script, you'd pay another 20$ I was in a discussion with her and the other scriptors. Commercial use is charged. Free distribution doesn't cost anything though.
Zeriab 9 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 That may be the case for that particular script CrimsonInferno, but you cannot generalize. There are scripts which the authors give permission to use commercial free of charge. Some require credits Some require a free copy of the commercial game Some require payment (can both be single payment and royaltees) The author does not have to give you permission. (I dunno if this is any real danger though) Some scripts comes with a clear license description. If it states that you can use it for commercial use, then great unless you don't like any possible conditionals. If nothing is stated about commercial use or no license is described then you really should contact the author. Either way you are free to contact the author and see if you can negotiate a (different) license for commercial use. *hugs*

Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) Unless you can get the PERSONS real name I say don't do it. I would not buy a game if someone was credited as BigSmiles23 from rmxpunlimited.net!! Edited September 16, 2010 by Kage Kazumi
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted September 16, 2010 That may be the case for that particular script CrimsonInferno, but you cannot generalize. Oh, I didn't mean to generalize them all, but two of the above I talked to the makers and read their threads, and it said 20$ :
