Is it illegal to earn money with RMXP?

Short answer, no. RPG Maker XP is a game creating engine, and as such I shouldn't be.

 

But, it's really iffy if you should. I have seen a game for sale using RMXP, namely Aveyond.

I just don't think games made using RMXP should be sold for profit, though I understand why someone would.

I mean if you use straight RTP, then nothing is really original, but if you use your own custom sprites/scripts and RTP then it'd be wise to release a demo for people to try to see if they would want to buy your game.

 

Personally for me, RMXP is more like a hobby so I won't try to sell a game I make for profit, but like I said, I've looked around, and it doesn't appear to be illegal to sell games using RMXP. <you just can't try to sell RMXP itself>

To add to WhiteRabbit...

 

You can sell a game made with any Enterbrain product RPG Maker XP, RPG Maker VX, and IG Maker even if you use the Graphics and Sounds that come with the programs. However I must disagree with the idea that RMXP (and its predecessors) are nothing more then for Hobby Game Makers and should not be sold. You have to be pretty closed minded to think such a thing as even large companies use products like RMXP (they don't use it in general, just software like it). These software ranges in the prices that we can afford ($400+) and can not afford ($15,000). I have seen many games made in RMXP that have and are still being sold by a single person or a small online business ( http://www.amaranthia.com/ ). I believe that if you truly think you got what it takes to make a game in RMXP and sell it than go for it, but just remember this one thing, you should use all ORIGINAL GRAPHICS, SOUNDS, SCRIPTS, etc.

There are both legal and illegal ways to earn money with RMXP. I will focus on legal ways. (Non-exhaustive)

You can earn money buy selling games made in RMXP if you have bought a license. (I am not sure whether you can legally sell a game made in RMXP if you have made it in the trial period and not bought a license. You cannot use the RTP though)

You can use the RTP in commercial games only if you have bought a license.

If you use other resources then you'll have to acquire the necessary permissions to use them.

 

You can earn money by doing commissioned jobs such as spriting for other RMXP games. (Some creaters will pay to get work done)

 

You can create resources and sell them. It could for example be selling licenses to a script at say $10 for use in a commercial game. ($10 per title)
