Ecowolfsteen 14 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 I'm getting really serious about what I want to do with my life, that is: Being a game developer/programmer. If you've seen the topic, I know Python. But, I want to start getting real, and making my own games with the big programming languages like C++, C#, etc.. But, I'm not sure where to start.. Suggestions.. ?
Chief 30 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 actually, the best you could learn is just C, not C++ or C#... just saying, lol. I've been told to start wherever you wanted, as long as youre dedicated.
formlesstree4 18 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 C# has the XNA Game Studio that you can utilize if you want. There's plenty of tutorials out there. If you want to get your hands dirty then go with something like C or C++ where you need to manage a heck of a lot more. However, if you're just starting then I'd go with C#; managed language, object oriented and does a great deal of stuff for you behind the scenes. A great way to step into programming. Ecowolfsteen 14 Report post Posted October 30, 2010 I have XNA Game Studio, and have thought about using it. Now that you mention it, I might start there. Thanks!

Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted November 1, 2010 Hell, look at minecraft. I'd say Java makes billions right about now. :P
formlesstree4 18 Report post Posted November 1, 2010 Learn C# first, then you can learn Java. They have such similar syntaxes that it's insane. One of the reasons I say learn C# first is because of the Integrated Development Environment that C# has. It might not be perfect, but it's better then most Java IDE's. Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted November 24, 2010 (edited) If you look at colleges their programing is based on C++ because it is the standard language to program in when creating serious games. If you truly are serious I suggest checking these sites out: http://www.gameinstitute.com/ --- Offer a variety of online courses. Price ranging from about $150-$550+ (see site for accurate prices). http://www.gameproducer.net/ --- The forum offers advice from people who have been there and done it. http://www.gdmag.com/homepage.htm --- Official Game Developer magazine. Find who is hiring, ads for colleges, read issues or problems big companies had when making a game (like FF13), read the latest game software, etc (paid subscription; online version and physical). http://www.gamasutra.com/ --- Find job listing and get advice. http://gamecareerguide.com/ --- College information, job listings, advice, free eMagazine, etc. http://www.gamedev.net/ --- The largest Indie Game site/community, advice, tutorials, forums, etc. Edited November 24, 2010 by Kage Kazumi
