Making a game adaptation of a book.

So I'm making an RPG adaptation of a book (it's listed as my current project). Now, what should I focus on first? Adapting the story for what RPGmaker can do, or what the gameplay will be like?

I have a good idea of what the gameplay will be like. It'll mostly be a normal RPG, but often going into stealth missions or driving portions that will either be like a shoot-em-up or one of those drive down a road and dodge traffic games. I'll give details on those if asked.

I can kinda see how you'd event the driving, but how would you get the player to automatically go forward while still letting them maneuver?

Well for that, there is a script that allows for it, the only part I would find annoying was the mapping since you wouldn't want it to be too short or too long.
