Enigma 10 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 (edited) Yesterday, when I turned off my computer it seemed fine, but when I tried turning it on it didn't work. So I attempted to reinstall windows 7 Unfortunately it Formatted my Harddrive, So all my sprites, resources, games, scripts, etc. where wiped of the face of the earth. I do have some back ups but I have spent an entire year catching up and when I've finnaly reached notable progress on many of my projects this happens. So currently I am quitting Rpg Maker. If I can some how get my data back then I will resume work, but for now thats it, I've had it This week, I will not be very active on the site, albiet posting updates. When I comeback I will be available to help with projects or what not but for right now, dont expect much -Enigma Edited January 19, 2011 by Enigma
CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 I'm sorry to here that Enigma...that sucks, like really bad :( Well, sometimes a PC does that, you probably shouldn't have reinstalled and instead, ran the other option... :( I hope you come on soon to chat with everyone though :P
Bigace360 38 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 (edited) Well, sometimes a PC does that, you probably shouldn't have reinstalled and instead, ran the other option... :( Wait why did you restore your computer again. You only do that as a last resort when you've tried everything. And their is ways to extract info from your computer onto an external harddrive even when it can't turn on. My uncle was able to do it with my laptop when it couldn't turn on because of the power. Also, not to bringer of bad news but that stuff isn't coming back unless you backed it up somewhere. So your closes bet is to just start from the beginning. Sorry -- :( :jay: :o :shok: :nono4: Edited January 17, 2011 by bigace

clone1018 4 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 (edited) First off lets define formatting: Disk formatting is the process for preparing a hard disk drive or other storage medium for its use by an operating system (OS), usually including the setting up an empty file system. ~ Wikipedia This means that the whole drive is completely erased. You'll get this same result from dipping your hard drive in lava. This is not recoverable. You could pay people 10 million dollars and they could get about 2MB of data off of the hard drive. Also this is a prime example of why you keep backups. Edited January 17, 2011 by clone1018
rgangsta 43 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 I know how you feel, Enigma. This happened to me with my very first VX game. A virus attacked my computer and when I restored it, most of the game data was erased. At least this gives you a chance to start new and fresh. Speaking of backups. I have to make one right away. madanchi 18 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 That's extremely bad news Enigma, very soryr for what happened :( For future issues, always back up your data, usually around once a month. If this happens again, use a program called Knopix which allows you to transfer data from your comp to an external hard drive - you dont need to go into safe mode, bios or OS (desktop) its simply a case of disc insert, power on, starts running. Also, do regular virus scans, defragment and Ccleaner. Why it wouldn't turn on, hmm, maybe because the power cord came out of your graphics card (gpu)? maybe your psu is failing, hard driver (hdd) failure etc over heating of the processor (cpu) or possibly even ram issues (may want to run program that tests the gigaflops - i think once called MemTest) - and any noticeable issues/ faults, slow downs etc
Enigma 10 Report post Posted January 19, 2011 I've usually been real lax with back ups, like once every 4 months. Unfortunately, After having a little siesta from game developing I've decided to start back up again Why, you might ask would I come back after barely 48 hours you ask? Well, thats because I am an Idiot, at least I ignore rational sense to keep doing this despite my unfortunate luck (Im guessing a bad update f-ed up my computer since their were zero warning signs) Unfortuantely, this means my games like Azure Ocean and Limit will be on hold while I develop a fresh entirely new project. My new project will use an action battle system as does limit, but I'm not going to make custom resources for a while due to the immense loss of time from my computer failure. In other words for those of you with Notoriously short attention spans I am now UN-quiting.

I've been in your shoes before and it's not fun. Re-installing the stuff on just my laptop would take something like 6 or 7 hours. (Just for the RMXP stuff) Then a few hundred more for the games. 1 Knuckles reacted to this
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted January 19, 2011 Yeah, I back Free To Play. Not cool Clone. As said, I'm sorry to hear that Enigma. Hope you get back in the game same. I've been there before. But because of a family members stupidity.
Enigma 10 Report post Posted January 19, 2011 K, I wish I had uploaded the Limit Demo, but I do have an Azure Ocean Back up The azure Ocean demo is a 1-2 months behind but thier were no new resources made for it so it is savagable all my other games such as prince had barely little development anyway so I will bring those back at a later date unfortunately Limit, which is supposed to be my signature game can't be recovered due to the sheer ammount of resources I need for it, all of which where custom and lost

Free To Play 3 Report post Posted January 19, 2011 Does he even know what troll means? XD Anon asks a question he already knows the answer to, or states an extreme opinion, just for comedic effect, and contributes nothing to the topic. Clone is the troll. Polraudio 122 Report post Posted January 20, 2011 BACK ON TOPIC! If i have to tell everyone 1 more time im going to ban you all for a week im getting sick and tired of people starting shit. Now stay on topic or dont post at all. Now to help. Dont put to many applications and stuff on your computer yet. Dont want to over-wright the clusters/sectors. Use this and you might be able to recover most of your stuff http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download
Knuckles 1 Report post Posted January 24, 2011 This means that the whole drive is completely erased. You'll get this same result from dipping your hard drive in lava. Fortunately this is not always true. When "deleting" files, you are usually deleting entries from the table of contents and not the actual data. The actual data will still exist on a temporal basis until it's being overridden by replacement data. Formatting is usually no different. An undelete tool (don't have one of any recommendations, the tool Polraudio recommended will hopefully do the job) will scan the hard drive for any recoverable data and if you haven't written much data into your new operating system, or the operating system alone has not destroyed much of the files you want, you have some ray of hope for any recovery. CrimsonInferno 35 Report post Posted January 24, 2011 I don't know about you, but deleting and emptying the trash can still leaves shadow copies behind. You can always check that, Enigma :P
