Installing on more than one computer?

Question

So I haven't visited here in... well, a LONG time anyway. I joined in 2008, but I don't remember if I ever even posted. Basically, some time after that, I stopped working seriously with RMXP, due to a combination of feeling like my projects weren't going anywhere, and other things taking up my time and attention.

Recently, though, I started thinking about it again, and thought it'd be fun to at least play around with it some more... stumbled on this place (again) and dug up my barely used account.

So I did have a couple of technical questions... in addition to my desktop, which is what I've always run RMXP on, I now have a netbook (that I didn't have the last time I used RMXP). I was thinking, it would be neat to be able to play with it on the go, but I haven't been able to find ANYTHING online about whether or not one can install the program to multiple computers. I did pay for the full, legit version at the time (it was back in 2007 if memory serves), so is it possible to install it on a second computer without buying it again?

Also, assuming that I can get the program onto the netbook, has anyone done something like this, using two computers to work on one project? Obviously you'd have to keep moving it back and forth... if you knew, for example, that in a given session you had only modified the actual game data, could you copy just the "Data" folder back to the other computer in order to keep them in sync (without having to copy the entire project folder back and forth every time you switched machines)?

Beyond that, I dunno yet if I'm going to REALLY get back into it and try to make something, or just kind of goof around with it, but either way, I know where to come if I need more help... I've lurked a bit these last few days, and I've noticed that there's a much more friendly atmosphere here than some of the other RPGM sites I frequented a few years ago. :)

Nope you will have to buy a copy for each computer.

Yup. If your on the same network you can share the folder and access it on any computer on your network.

You can also buy a flashdrive and do it that way. I use to keep my games on my flashdrive all the time and go back and forth from home to school.

Drats!

I was afraid that might be the case... ah well. As neat as it would be to be able to work on stuff on my netbook, I'm not sure it's worth spending another $60. At the very least, not until/unless I determined that my project will actually go somewhere this time. :sweatdrop:

Hmm... I suppose I could just try and remember to save it onto the flash drive every night, after saving it to the hard drive. Moot point, though, unless I did decide to pay for the second copy.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks. :P And yeah, I probably joined at the time to get access to some resources or something... I didn't actually get around to posting before my interest in RMXP diminished, haha. I've been playing around with the program again the last couple of days, trying to re-familiarize myself with everything. Still not sure if I really want to sink in the time required to actually create a full game... I think I can spin a good story, and I have a decent grasp of mapping and eventing, but for everything else (scripting, graphics, etc) I'm dependant on what I can find online. We'll see how it goes.

Okaaaaaayyyy...

So, deciding that I might as well at least TRY it on my netbook to see how well it runs, I downloaded the trail of RMXP off of Enterbrain's English site. Had to screw around with the screen resolution to get it to run, but other than that, it seems to work fine.

I took my project from my desktop computer, which has had RMXP on it for years (and this project has been around for years). The project opens fine on the desktop. I transferred it to the netbook and opened it with the trial RMXP I had just loaded, and that was fine as well. However, I made a few changes, saved, and sent it back to the desktop, and NOW it won't open. Specifically, it throws up an error message saying "This project is from an old version of RPG Maker and cannot be loaded."

Any project moved FROM the desktop TO the netbook will open on the netbook (and if it originated on the desktop, it will open there). But the reverse does not work: projects that originated on the netbook will not open on the desktop.

I did notice one other thing. On the desktop, the program is "RPGXP version 1.02a". On the netbook, the (just downloaded) program is "RPGXP version 1.04."

This discrepancy could have something to do with it, I would think, though it's weird that the desktop returns that error message even though it IS the "older version."

Searched the net for anything about upgrading RPGXP to the latest version and found nothing. I could really use some help figuring out what to do here.

While I'm at it, one other question. My old project has ccoa's UMS script in it (I'm sure SOMEONE here is familiar with it). When I create a regular ol' "show text" event, the text box just keeps repeating forever during test play. I'm betting this has something to do with something in that script, but I have no idea what, since I haven't worked on this thing in like two years. :sweatdrop:

Any help is appreciated!

Just update your desktop to 1.04. The error message should read "...different version...", or "...newer version..."

Uh... how?? I specified in my previous post that I searched online for a way to "update" the program, and couldn't find anything. If there is an "update" option somewhere WITHIN the program itself, I missed it. If it's something glaringly obvious that I overlooked, then fine, I will feel appropriately stupid after it's pointed out to me, but by all means, point it out!

I would just poke around more (I didn't spend a LOT of time in the program last night, since it was getting very late even by the time I found the problem and made my last post), but I'm at work right now, so I have no access to RMXP.

As for the error message, I dunno what to tell ya. It says "old version" as the reason for its inability to load the project, despite the fact that the program throwing up the error message IS the older version.

WAIT! Do NOT buy a new copy just yet. Do you still have your activation and purchase codes? If you do then please contact Enterbrain. They maybe able to give your new codes.

I brought VX one or two years ago. I have installed the same purchase on more than one computer because two of my computers died.

Well, I appreciate the tip... not having to pay would be nice (though at least it's down to 30), but before I deal with that, I need to figure out how to get the two versions in sync so that I can pass the same project back and forth between both computers. If I can't do that, having RMXP on the netbook is worthless, whether I pay for it or not. In any case, I certainly won't be buying a second copy until this issue is solved; once that's taken care of, I'll see about contacting Enterbrain and seeing what they can do for me.

So as to HOW to update my desktop RMXP to 1.04... I poked around the program some more and found nothing. brewmeister's post makes me think that he thinks it should be easy to do, but I can't find a thing anywhere about how to do it.

Anyone have any ideas on that?

You should only use one computer and stick with it. Just get a flashdrive to make a copy. It would be easy to stick with one computer to save time.

Had to do this many times. Open the project file up in notepad and change the number to your version hit save. I suggest making 2 project files. One for each version. The project file should be able to have any name.

I don't want to update because I don't know if my key will work or if I will have to buy another one for a program that had nothing changed in 1.4.
