RMXP keeps crashing!!!

RPG Maker XP crashes on start-up. No matter what happens, the result is still the same.

 

I have tried restarting, running as administrator, running under XP service pack 2, and the like. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled but still the same.

 

I am running Vista at 32-bit if that helps.

 

Any ideas?

Does your anti-virus have permission to load it? Sometimes, after system updates or scans, it an anti-virus software will lock certain software (happens to me and my Digimon RPG Exe lol).

 

Does it give any message when it crashes, or does it load up, freeze, shut down or just it open and then just shut off quickly?

OH noes D: I wish I could help man, that must be frustrating. Generally my blame would just be put on Vista, since microsoft did a worse job than usual with Vista. But that wouldn't be a useful answer. It would be helpful if the program at least spits some kind of error at you.

It doesn't even open. I double-click the icon and:

 

and if I open up the project's *.exe file, the same error happens but instead says "RGSS player has stopped working."

Have you checked your Firewall and Anti-virus?

 

It could be that you PC can no longer load and work the exe...

Dead graphics/video card, dirty PC, dirty vents and fans.

None of those are the cause because the vents are clean and all other programs work fine...anything else?

A lot of programs can work fine without graphics cards, so if its broken and some things work, that doesn't really mean its not problem. You can run a scan of your PC specs and see if its up to date or have problems. You may also want to update your cards, that could be a reason.

 

Or, completely uninstall from your PC. Delete all the old folders (except your game, of course), therefore making your PC "clean" of the software. Now reinstall it and make sure you put your RGSS folder with the Enterbrain folder. Depending on where you put your files, it could be causing problems.

 

It could also be Gameguard.

What's Gameguard? I've never heard of it.

If you have it installed, it could be causing problems. I highly doubt you have it installed, but just in the off chance it is, I felt I should mention it. To see if you have Gameguard, search your installed programs, your programs folders or do a search on your PC. Its basically a software that comes with a lot of games and softwares. :P

 

EDIT:

Oh...your install might be infected, or your PC could be. You should scan your Pc, files and softwares, just in case.

There could be another program interfering with the RPG Maker. Have you downloaded or installed anything recently? If so please uninstall any new programs, and then try XP.

Try what Rated said as well. You can tell what you recently installed by clicking the bottom left icon of the windows and then click "ALL PROGRAMS" and then scroll around. New programs will be highlighted in yellow/orange :D

Only demos for rmxp, pictures, text files, etc. But I reckon the PC is infected. Big Time. Heres why:

 

It occasionally crashes on boot.

It occasionally doesn't send VGA output.

It freezes too often.

Programs stop responding for a couple of minutes on a regular basis.

Etc. but, my most recent AVAST scan came up clean...

I suggest you run virus scan all night when you sleep. That's what I do. I wish you posted this information at first. It is clear the computer is either infected or your hardware is broken.

A lot of Anti-viruses will come up clean. Sometimes they don't even detect JAVA infections. Scan your Java or do a full scan (will sometimes time 5+ hours). I had AVAST, it didn't work for well for me (lost 3-4 PCs). Do you ever get a BLUE screen with white text after a freezeup or shut down? That is usually a virus or massive "I can't run this stuff! *cry cry*" from the PC (aka, the baby syndrome my PC suffers from).

 

Solution 1 (rather, something extremely helpful that could help determine whether its a virus or PC dump):

 

 

It definitely is something wrong with your PC. Can you see inside of your PC? Your video card might have a vent on the bottom you can't see. Dust could be clogging it, or there should be a gray-silver box behind one of the fans. Depending on your system it will either be on the bottom, top or side of the innards.

 

Whenever you can (preferably when you decide to turn your PC off), see if you can spot the silver-gray box and see if the |||| (those represent the lines/cuts on the box) are full of dust. Now, this isn't my PC and the places I circled could be someplace different on yours, but they generally look the same. You are looking for 1. A small, heavy, silve box with cuts/lines through them. 2. Vents/fans, graphics cards or anything that is super dust. A good way to check, is to put your hand far enough away from the vent/fan/card (DON'T TOUCH IT! LOL) and see if it is giving on heat. That usually indicates whether or not it needs to be cleaned. If you have never cleaned your PC, then it needs to be cleaned lol

 

Here are some images I found that could help you located possible places:

 

 

 

 

 

Do you see the big black fans? The silver box I'm talking about is usually behind that. So whenever you have your PC off, take a flashlight and try to see behind the fan. If its clogged or dusty, you can attempt to clean it (though I would suggest a professional if you don't want the chances of screwing up your PC fan). You should have your PC cleaned monthly...

 

This exact thing happens to me all the time. And each time I clean up my PC (both spec wise and dust wise) it stops for a few months.

 

 

Solution 2:

 

 

Uninstall your RPG maker completely.

 

Go to Admin > System > Performance Information and Tools > Open Disc Cleanup

 

And then delete all old system information. And then do this process once more but instead, click the "Clean up system files" in the Open Disc Cleanup window and then the second tab called "MORE OPTIONS". Once inside here, delete all the "SYSTEM RESTORE & SHADOW COPIES", press "OKAY" and then "DELETE" and then install your software once more.

 

And then run an assessment on your PC and see what it says. And then run a Full virus scan and check your PC speed/graphics.

I was actually able to give the "big silver box" a good clean because it can be separated from the motherboard. I have a Compaq Presario SR5440AN Desktop PC

From the sound of it I would do the following (if you haven't done so already:

 

1)Disk Defragmentation

2)Disk Cleanup

 

Both of which can be found in: Start >> Applications >> System Tools

 

Also you should probably check if any of your drivers are out of date: Driver Fetcher (free trial)

 

If the above fail I would then try one of the following:

 

1) System Restore
