BOSS QUEST

INTRODUCTION DEMO RELEASED:

I threw together a demo of the first 40-60 minutes of the game.

The demo focuses mostly on story, because the battle system for the game is completely unfinished, so the battles are essentially placeholders at the moment.

This will just serve as a proof of concept, and let anybody who's interested get a feel for the characters of Boss Quest.

Anyway, let me know if you find any glitches, and tell me what you think! ;D <3

>WHAT THE HELL IS BOSS QUEST?

Boss Quest is an RPG where the only fights are BOSS FIGHTS!

>THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT. WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Boss Quest follows four heroes as they travel through space & time to find/fight the most epic bosses that space & time can provide (which is coincidentally, very epic).

...

Boss Quest is:

  • Facing countless, inexplicable boss encounters
  • Getting EXP/Leveling up
  • Befriending shirtless guys
  • Suppressing your misogyny
  • Losing your mind

>I LOVE ALL OF THOSE THINGS YOU JUST SAID!

Tired of drowning in Japanese culture/shitty writing/45 minute cutscenes? Me too.

The writing in Boss Quest has an emphasis on comedy, and mature content that isn't normally featured in (J)RPG games.

At times, ostensibly tasteless, Boss Quest is a refreshing take on the RPG genre.

>NOW I HAVE AN BONER! QUICK! TELL ME ABOUT THESE HEROES!

You got it...!

"Barry represents the impatience of the player"

Barry is a malnourished, recklessly impulsive 18 year-old boy with poor personal hygiene, very little grasp on social norms, and a personality that weighs 1,000 lbs. He's loud, in your face, and has wits that would take a private detective to track down.

Having a conversation with him is an unwinnable battle where, by the end, you feel like you've been verbally molested. There are only two people in the world as obnoxious/idiotic as Barry, and he's both of them.

Barry's only passion in life is fighting bosses, and he will sacrifice anything, especially his companions' well being, to fight the most epic boss in existence.

"Shane is just the funnest black dude ever"

Shane is a notoriously feared, yet, somewhat apprehensive 17 year-old. When he's not popping hymens, or failing to meet his parents' expectations, he spends his time trimming his facial hair and selling used lottery tickets to his classmates.

His influence is so extensive that he would be instated as President of Earth, even if his inaugural address was him burping the Egyptian alphabet.

Fortunately for Earth, he's not ambitious enough to try.

In short, he's a really tall 3 year-old.

MELODY

"Melody isn't the voice of reason, she's just a girl"

Melody is an 18 year-old social dynamo. She's got composure, manners, and looks that stay the fuck out of her way. Her patience with others is stupendous, but she won't hesitate to point out their shortcomings.

She's the only rational voice in a party of morons.

WARWICK

"He's the smart one, presumably"

Warwick is an 11 year-old child prodigy who skipped both junior, and senior kindergarten due to his acute understanding of colouring, and taking naps.

They say he can even write in cursive.

Unlike every 11 year-old ever, Warwick doesn't speak. He doesn't utter a word under any circumstances. As a result, his past, his personality, and his secrets to dressing like a bad-ass are all a mystery.

>HOW DOES THIS GAME WORK?

  1.
  2. I've yet to finalize which scripts I will be using for the final project.
  3. There will be no minor encounters, only boss fights.
  4. Each of the main characters have "Boss Breaker" forms, which are more powerful versions of themselves that can be activated in combat. Their exact variables are undetermined.
  5. The game's script is nearly complete.

>SO WAIT, WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?

I'm Kyle, I'm 19 years old, I love to write, and I'm currently attending comedy school.

I've been using RPG Maker since I can remember, and Boss Quest has become my baby.

I made all the sprites, and battlers/art for the game (using sketches drawn by my friend).

Unfortunately, I've become so busy in the last year that I haven't been able to make any progress on it.

I'm going to be reaching out to the internet to lend me a hand <3

Further information will follow. Now I need to go post in Project Recruitment, right...?

I don't understand Barry's character profile. How can he weight 1,000lbs and be malnourished?

What is this game about? The other characters have nice interesting profiles.

"...a personality that weighs 1,000 lbs."

I guess it's just a silly way of saying his character is unrealistically strong (personality wise).

I'll give a synopsis soon :alright:

I like the concept; and I enjoy your spriting style :)

I would like to point out that a lot of JRPGs are actually quite obscene in nature...we just got their clean north american censored versions. (but you are right, normally mature content is not involved)

It's been a while since I have played a funny game so I think this could be pretty cool :)

@LaMasquerade

I'm gunna try and bang out a really short demo of the first few minutes of the game!

It'll be dialogue, mostly, since the battle system is a fucking skeleton right now; but it'll be something, right? :alright:

@Zadeon

lol Yo! Thanks a lot dude! :king:

@kellessdee

Yeah for sure man, I just tried to make the characters in Boss Quest the antithesis of RPG characters. They're actually really terrible people! (BOSS FIGHTS!!)

@Kiriashi

I'm glad you think that!

lol if Mel didn't shoot Barry in the face every so often they'd get nothing done!

THANKS EVERYBODY!!

@Broken Messiah

That's interesting, I use it more as a story concept than a gameplay mechanic, though.

Only fighting bosses, huh? Sounds like Shadow of the Colossus. Great game, btw. If you ever need inspiration, I suggest playing that game.

Well, I'm downloading the demo now and the game looks really promising.

.:EDIT:.

Playing it now.

You used Samurai Champloo songs?! :o Awesome choice of music. :alright:

LMFAO @ this screenshot.

.:EDIT2:.

Funniest game I've ever played. I was laughing all over the place. The scenes are funny, soundtrack is nice and smooth, and the mapping is awesome. It was fun playing even though I didn't know where to go half the time...I didn't finish the game, though (I will later). Great job on this. I give this game a 4/5.

When it comes to me I test all games on many aspects and one of those aspects is:

1) Usability for people who don't have or use RMXP.

This failed that test first and has harsh as it sounds, it not worth my time to download to my computer which can play it.

@Noob Saibot

Yeah! I tried to export it so people without RMXP could play it, I'm not sure what I did wrong, do you know?

The maker would have to do it. Plus having the RTP is not enough as it still fails to run.

@Noob Saibot

That's weird, rgangsta from a couple posts was able to run it. Did you put the "Audio" folder into the Boss Quest folder?

I tried to export it with the right resources so even people without RMXP could run it, but I don't know what I did wrong (any help?)

I guess I'll work on it.

Did you include the rgss10x.dll? That would be something only rmxp users would have and required to run it.

I need to play this once i have more time on my hands XD

Is that all I need to do to fix it? (Admittedly I'm not resourceful enough to find rgss10x.dll, where is that exactly?)

I'll re-release the demo once I figure out how to make it playable by anyone.

It should be, I am *pretty* sure (i haven't really tried, but as far as I know it should work) that all you need to distribute rmxp games for users that do not have rmxp are: the rgss dll and any rtp files that is used in the game (you do not have to include the rtp if it isn't used)

The location of the rgss102e.dll (this is the latest version i think) is

C:\Windows\System32\ (32-bit windows)

or

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ (if you use a 64-bit windows)

I could be wrong about the 32 bit part (i only have 64 bit) if you cannot find it go to C:\Windows\ and just search for rgss102e.dll or even just rgss.

Also, there is a script that helps create a log of any missing files in your game.

http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php?topic=2949.0

I am not sure if it will tell you which files are used in your game, so if that is the case this script will make a list of what resources are used in the game:

Okay thanks I found it.

So does that mean the user has to place that in their C:\Windows directory? Or will the program find it if it's only in the game demo folder?

WOW those resource log scripts are helpful. Thank you.

Yea. It will. Just put it in the demo's main folder.

Well how it works, is when the user opens game.exe the game.ini file first searches in the game directory for the rgss.dll and then if it can't find it there looks else where. So the user can just leave the rgss dll right in your game folder they do not have to do any file moving :)

EDIT: oh, rgangsta you beat me to it :P

And don't worry about it for the scripts, don't thank me, thank those who wrote them :)
