Wii U

Recommended Posts

To summarize, Nintendo unveiled the inevitable next gen Nintendo games console at E3, aka the Wii U. This 8th generation Nintendo console is Nintendo's leap to the HD world of gaming, along with a new controller that can be used to stream your games for use w/o a TV. Useful when your parents or Wife watches the news or soap operas.

Many other details in this article and essentially anywhere around the web.

This console looks pretty tight. I'm so going to buy it when it comes out. I love the Game Streaming Controller thing, but the controller is GIANT compared to others, which makes sense all in all but probably has horrible storage. That's just probably going to be the worst thing about, but who knows?

But, I'm also looking forward to see what the interface is like, interested as ever am I.

lol it isn't huge, have you even seen it propperly?

well, I think it's great! although the title of this topic almost gauranteed will spoil it for someone who ahsnt seen it yet... ;) I'm very interested in what the actual console will look like, all that's been realeased so far is a prototype case, also.... new LoZ game for Wiiu!!! the graphics demo looked very impressive, the 3D model size, draw diustance, lighting, colour, aniamtions, water fluids and post processing effects really were top. can't wait, along with some other 3DS titles =D

Yes I've seen it! Compared to other controllers it is. It's like the size of the Blackberry Playbook.

The Wii U supposedly allows for USB 2.0 external media devices like 2TB HDDs or HDDs of any other size and USB thumb drives, iPods, etc. for storage. Hopefully we can directly load and save game files, application channels and virtual console games, as oppose to the current scenario in the Wii. Even though the SD card menu allows for a false sense of achieving that (for channels), you're still utilizing the internal memory.

内蔵フラッシュメモリに加え、SDメモリーカードや外付けUSBハードディスクドライブを利用することで容量を拡張することができる。

They actually make the point that you can use an HDD in addition to the flash memory, so I guess save files etc. can actually be saved on a harddrive.

You can play DVDs and CDs with it? If not then Nintendo is truly WAY behind in times.

I'm not interested in the product. All they're going to do is remake Super Mario Brothers AGAIN and over one million people will buy the same game AGAIN.

Wii U is the wii, only with a touch screen controller and has Blu-ray Support (more Stuff can be stored in) yes the Wii U looks powerful and i think PS3 and Xbox will have to Fear, unless that Microsoft and sony has something that will pwn Nintendo again. but why buy this product if the 8th generation of gaming will begin in 2013-2014? the product will last 3 or 4 years, well Microsoft and sony has started making new plans for New Gen Consoles.

The Wii U is a member of the 8th generation like the Wii is a 7th generation console. The Wii U will likely exceed the processing power of the PS3 and 360, but will not have a chance to remotely compete with the PS4 and the Nextbox (whatever MS will name it as) in terms of the technical under-the-hood processor power, so the PS3 and Xbox360 need not to fear as they're from another generation.

Your question is, why buy this product? For the games Nintendo has to offer of course. The Wii U is a buy for Zelda and Mario fans but assuming you're not a fan of Nintendo's franchises this product probably isn't for you.

I feel like I wasted a 2 years worth of savings, my hard earned cash, last year on a Wii. What a waste...what a big waste.

Thank you Nintendo for making awesome games, but seriously...think about the poor people for once *same to all consoles*. :(

lol i see people posting about only Nintendo games being the reason to buy, i'm just sat here loling. Did anyone even acknowledge the many other games going to be released? and thats not all of them, there's some geat titles coming out for it, even Epic will be on it!

oh and this talk about when the next ps3 and 360 will be out and that WiiU will be behind and neglected, no, because by then the WiiU would of had it's time and Nintendo again be ready to move onto a new console and be ahead of other competitors yet again. Unless the WiiU remains very successful when the next ps3/ 360 is relased

I don't see why hardly anyone here can see the potential it has and and instead trying to find nitty gritty bits to highlight, i'm not fan boy and I do agree with the points made but I also see the huge positive sides of it

Give it time, once PS4 and MS's next console release many of these publishers will likely jump off the boat and this console will recreate the Wii situation all over again. I don't at all want to see this happening but it is my prediction. The reality is, cross platform titles on the PS4 and MS's next console will suffer in quality if they're ever planning on releasing them also on the Wii U. The Wii U, although may be more technically advanced than the PS3, it will be behind Sony and MS's next generation consoles. Don't expect many of these major publishers to develop many exclusives either, because they notoriously focus on cross platform titles primarily.

Hell maybe I am wrong, and I really hope so, but remember history repeats itself and here are my doubts.

Unless the WiiU remains very successful when the next ps3/ 360 is relased

The next generation PS and Xbox will be announced sooner than you think. Xbox360 is approaching its 6th anniversary, while PS3 and Wii 5th anniversary this Nomember. Generations don't last long and if you look at the history of console cycles you would observe similar lifespans before their successors get rolled out. PS3's 10-year lifecycle does not at all hinder Sony's development and release of the PS4. As a matter of fact, the PS3 will go the way of the PS2, an inevitable target marketing shift to the soccer moms and Sony will focus on the PS4 for first party. It's all a reality.

I don't see why hardly anyone here can see the potential it has and and instead trying to find nitty gritty bits to highlight, i'm not fan boy and I do agree with the points made but I also see the huge positive sides of it

I do observe the potential, but I take a glance at reality and what my expectations will be and again, history repeats itself. I am not in any way bashing this console as I am interested in a launch purchase. I believe in Nintendo, and yes it has a lot of potential. The Wii also had a lot of potential, but the bulk of the gaming industry has been focusing on the Xbox360 and PS3 rather than the Wii this generation, obviously because of issues with cross platform titles, and major publishers notoriously don't (primarily) develop exclusives, otherwise the Wii wouldn't get the reputation it currently has.

Nentendo Meh..... The wii is nice for family and stuff but Sony and Microsoft is where the hardcore gamers are.

The wii u looks like a nice system and all but nothing i would ever buy. After SNES and N64 i gave up on Nentendo. All they do is have Mario, Zelda, Mario, Zelda. They need to come out with better characters/games to get my buy.

I see they are making the graphics a little better than before. Thats always good. I always thought they lacked in the graphics area.

We have a Wii and i dont like it at all. Motion controllers is not my style.

@madanchi:

I have faith in Nintendo's work. Why? Because Nintendo still leads the boards with consoles and handhelds. Its sold far more units than any other console. It has drawn in hard-core gamers, casual gamers, new comers, adults, older people, younger people and even professional athletes.

I only have 2 games for the Wii (xD) but I know if I had more, like Smash Bros, I'd be playing it a lot too. That's the great thing about Nintendo. Their systems never disappoint: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Gameboy series, DS series, Wii and soon Wiiu too. So I have faith in this system, especially since it had emulate such stronger games now. That was the worse part about Wii, no "serious" looking graphics :P

@Kiriashi:

The same thing happened to me, almost. After I bought my Wii, my grandparents sent over another and now there are 2 in my house xD

@Lucas:

I don't like motion controllers either, except maybe for a fuller, better Zelda game, a possible better Star Wars game (I always wanted to have a Lightsaber!) and maybe a good ole' Fantasy game where I could use sword and shield. But that will never happen...I feel like the motion controller, 3d and voice control is getting in the way of developing good games.

I miss the good old days of the SNES and the Nintendo 64, when everyone wanted to play Zelda or Smash Bros without all the motion stuff... :(

While you are correct overall, nintendo has some hardcore gamer games(albeit not much, and generally multi-platform XD)...but I personally think if you want to do some hardcore gaming, then one should build a gaming pc. Maybe I am just a nintendo fanboy (so my opinion Is probably quite biased) but I have yet to see a single game exclusive on xbox 360 OR ps3 that I wish I could be playing.

And you forgot metroid :o probably one of nintendo's more hardcore series.

ANYWAYS ENOUGH WITH ME GOING ON NINTENDO RANTS [forced stop because then I would go on all day XD]

This console looks quite epic, looks like I should start saving my pennies. The one thing I have always been disappointed in were nintendo's online gaming attempts *crosses fingers* let's hope the wii U has a good online system. Is there any talk of that (maybe I am blind and didn't see it in articles XD)

I don't like motion controllers either, except maybe for a fuller, better Zelda game

Have you seen legend of zelda skyward sword?

http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6318187/e3-2011-the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword-preview

they've pretty much rethought the whole zelda gameplay formula...and 1:1 SWORD CONTROL RATIO

Metroid is my most loved and favoured game and series of all time! =DD It's amazing and suits me perfectly, the music, adventure, art style, atmoshpher everything.

Nintendo where always good with graphics until the Wii, Nes and Snews were just meh co9mapred to other consoles, but then the N64 and gamecube really took on good graphics, the Wii had gamecube graphics as it is the exact same baring wifi and bluetooth, even the memory card slot is the same pratically... XD but, saving those costs and betetr advertising emthos sure got them back on track with profits

@Knuckles, you pose good points and I could go on as well but it would end up as an endless cycle, both good vs bad :P the same can be said about WiiU being out of dat to ps4/360 OR the WiiU being the most up to date of the 3.

@Pol yeah Nintendo have fallen into only have very select games but it's that which makes those select games amazing to play. What other company spend the entire gen (start and end) on making one (or 3) games. So it's good thing but also a negative both areas have their respects

Yea, but I haven't played it yet and seen much of it, so I don't know how much I will be able to control yet. :)

I did absolutely love Twilight Princess though. :D

Try (if you haven't) Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Metroid Prime 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sin & Punishment, Mad World. There are more but these are some of the games on top of my head at the moment.

SNES has graphics superior to the competitor Megadrive and overall boasts more powerful tech.

I am not up for a debate either. I just want to clarify to you I am not attacking the Wii U in any way, shape, or form. As a matter of fact Nintendo is practically the only company I believe in as their console hardware is built to satisfying quality and their 1st party titles are generally top tier. If I could get away with just buying Nintendo's consoles (and a PC) I would, but Sony and, to a smaller extent, MS have games that also appeal to me thus that won't happen any time soon.

IMO: Nintendo is crazy... Intelligent... but crazy!

Ive had Kiriashi read off the specs from the Japanese page and from what I heard; WiiU will have more power in it than the PS3 and the Xburn 360 (ahem RRODs ring a bell?)

I own a Wii and a 360 and as it turns out the 360 is never on for more than an hour at a time.

Also- if you think just mario and zelda are gonna be at launch.....

Assasins Creed is comming as well- YES THATS RIGHT!

I watched the full confrence from Nintendo.

Pit is comming back (3DS)

New Smash Bros (WiiU(?))

Mario Kart 3DS

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (3DS)

Legend of Zelda 4 Swords (DS)

Legend of Zelda Links Awakening (DSi - VC)

I also saw some sort of shooter that I wasnt expecting to see for the WiiU, I dont reconize it however.

Nintendo wants to bring back both the hardcore and the casual gamers to the new WiiU.

My question is- how expensive is it

Ghost Recon will be out for it as well. Can't wait for that.

Lol, yeah, the RRoD has plagued every friend and family member of mine that owns a 360. Some units even went far enough to trigger fires that burned down houses.

Hopefully Nintendo will price it right. Typically their products are the cheapest of the bunch, and if Nintendo has learned from the mistake with the $250 3DS pricing (the NGP, now officially PlayStation Vita will also be $250 for the Wifi model), Nintendo should price it reasonably if they intend to draw in a large demand.

Nintendo really needs to drop the price by the time PSV rolls out. Not to mention the system only costs over $100 to manufacture (excluding the shipping, R&D, and some other factors) otherwise they'll be in a battle.

Didn't Reggie mention it would run a lot better and look better, than a PS3? He said something about memory too. Its going to have a butt-load plus memory cards. And then there is the 1088 HD thingy-mah-bob.

Lol. You don't have to like the Wii or Wii U if you don't want to, but don't be a fanboy dude. :3

Nintendo is not just the kiddie game company people make it out to be. Did you even watch ninty's conference? If it wasn't for the Wii U's name, it would seem like it was FOCUSED on 18-25 year olds. (or whatever the demographic is)

As for the Mario Zelda Mario Zelda bit.. are you kidding me? What's wrong with giving gamers the thing that they love? New and improved each time. As if sony hasn't done that. Or Microsoft. I could say all sony ever does is final fantasy here and there. xD

Sure. You didn't have to ask; fire it up.

I'm obligated too. :3 But thanks. I'll get started tomorrow.

The PS3's GPU is outdated (it's a modified version of the Nvidia 7800) to the ATI chipset Nintendo supposedly will implement for the Wii U. The Wii U will outperform the current generation of consoles including PS3.

I've read unnumbered fanboy comments around the web touting this as a kiddy gimmick console, just as usual. Nintendo is aiming further toward the core gamer with this system than the Wii as they know there is a market and Take 2's Rockstar is on board. Imagine if Mario is an unlockable character in GTA...

I thought I saw it at E3. If I did, this means Nintendo is taking a step away from releasing "family-oriented" games, like Mario, Mario Kart, etc.. Though those are fun and all, it brings the Wii U and Nintendo up with the "Big Dogs" for hardcore gaming, as well with Assassin's Creed being on the market, and who knows what else?
