Starting New game (help)

Question

Backstory Of me:

Okay so im a noob and im sure you guys get people like me alot.

I originally bought RPG XP a few years ago, just tinkered with it here and there and never really dug in and did something.

Now, i've got a lot of free time and figured i should atleast make something that i can share with people instead of sitting doing nothing.

 

-I know Ruby basics (Not an expert, still a beginner) but enough to understand a small level of terms.

 

I'm going to explain my idea and then i'll list the following things i need help with right off the bat.

If you have the answer to a question, it'd be great if you could provide a link to the information. Thanks in advance.

 

I'm using the "Pokemon Essentials" kit. My main objective is this:

 

To use the models and graphical design of the PE kit, but instead of having the pokemon battle system, i want to encorperate a different battle system to replace that entirely. ( probably a various RPG bs like atoa, etc.)

My questions are this:

Q: What do i take from Pokemon Essentials in order to have the above result?

 

Next up, if you're famaliar with pokemon at all, you know in the later versions pokemon can " follow you around".

here's an example video:

In my game, let me try and help you vizualize it for you.

Instead of having pokemon battle like how they usually do, which looks like this:

into something like this:

In this system, i'd be encorperating a party that fights AGAINST pokemon instead of beside them.

Also, in reference to the above video about the pokemon following you,

my next Question is:

Q: how do you make that sprite or script to have pokemon look like that on the map. In the PE kit there are no sprites that are able to follow you.

Instead of following you, in my game they would obviously be NPC's and available party members. In battle of course they would look different, but i'm referring to out of battle like the video where they follow you.

In my game, pokemon turn on the world and instead of having them at your side you are in a party (of humans and various other races) fending off hordes of pokemon.

 

My last and final question might be a huge facepalm to you good scripters and such but...

I really don't know how to start "making" this game.

I have the ideas lined up on paper and in my head i just can't seem to figure out what i need to start with even though i've read tuts and such.

I know i seem like im asking for alot but please, if you can be of any help that would be super.

if i understand what you said correctly you only want the pokemon graphics like the tilesets and event graphics?

edit: for the sprites on map you will have to import loads of ones of the net, just google rpg xp pokemon sprites, usually they come in packs of the regional game they were for, you may have a hard time getting sprites for the new games like dimond and black ect, the legendaries should be fine but people may not have made alot of them

Correct. I want the game to use the pokemon essentials graphic and stuff - its gonna look like a pokemon game until you enter a battle.

Then it should be totally different. And pokemon should be NPC sprites. which is difficult. :c

haven't had much luck finding the kind of pokemon sprites i'm in search of.

Was curious if theres some way i can make them (atleast look decent) or something.

i am currently at work at the mo on my break but as soon as i get home ill compile all of my pokemon graphics into a demo for you, i think i got all the hoen and johto sprites but maybe missing some here and there, ill also compile tilesets in there for you to use, but that will be in like 6 hours as im on a 12 hour shift lols :)

edit: been thinking about it, and i think you should start it as main character or something wakes up, goes to check on his pokemon or something, they seem fine, then later on in the day a strange aura fills the region, eg team rocket succeed in taking over the minds of pokemon, then you could have it that you gotta fight your way through them to get to team rocket and destroy there machine or whatever there using to control the minds of pokemon, only an idea, i hope its good enough to get you started on :)

And actually, i already had a plan for how i want it to start.

that idea sounds good too, But here's what i had in mind (keep in mind im still brainstorming ideas):

Main character wakes up, if you remember the show ash wakes up to go get his first pokemon - but when you step outside your town is on fire

and you don't know wtf is going on.

You go to your rivals house to find him dying upstairs and you say you're going to get help.

You go to Prof. Oaks and him and the remaining town are there with weapons and such fending off the onslaught of pokemon.

nobody has any idea whats going on ( your family is dead, and your rivals family is dead.) You and a group go to get your rival to bring him to Oaks place to get help, and this is where you encounter your first battle outside. ( Goes through everything of course ).

 

What do you think of that so far? just a rough outline.

 

Edit: also as i said before im a little unexperienced when it comes to rpg xp.

Like, i know concepts and studied tuts but i'm a more hands on learner not visual so i really have trouble putting what i see to work.

 

I have no idea what im supposed to start with or Do to get my game rolling even though i have all these ideas and kits and sprites.

please note, i used the pokemon essentials kit to put this together, basically i replaced all the scripts with rpg makers original ones, its got all the tilesets like before, i have added what i believe to be full sets of pokemon from the first, second and third gen pokemon, i have also added some legendaries from the newer games, i haven't re added the database from the default database so you will have to copy and paste the data over if you want it, also you will have to import icons ect if the data needs them, you can do this simply by exporting the images from a default project into a designated folder, then importing them into your pokemon game under the materials tab just next to the database, only copy and paste the database over once you sorted all the materials out, i also added a nice fire sprite, its on the map as soon as you press play, if you need any more help im always here :)

oh ye remember to give credits where needed if you release your game to the public, so to whoever put the essentials kit together and i got all the pokemon sprites from a rar file by ~twinlightownz

 

if you want the battle style to be like the one in the vid you will have to research into custom battle scripts, there are lots that are easy to set up, so its up to you what style you choose

 

edit- oh yeh i get a bit ahead of myself sometimes, i added the fire sprite or your idea above, sounds great, the only disadvantage i could see is that the start towns in pokemon are generally small, so it would be hard to set a huge comotion, i you started in a city or something where you could utilize the massive onslaut lol :P

Thank you so much! and yeah i have tons of questions, so hopefully i won't be too annoying for you :)

this is going to help a ton and i'll be sure to visit each respective forum and give credit where credit is due.

 

And yeah as for the storyline i just wanted to make it a small thing at first starting in the small town you start in, Kinda like an anomaly,

after the scare everyone should be like wow this never happens. But then you figure out its happening all over the region, and Oak sends you along with your rival to journey to stop the madness, and to root out the cause. Right now its just an idea but im sure i'll map out more once i get started.

Just a few questions i have right now are :

(Right now this is temporary for the battle system, i asked someone to help me out and im waiting on them to find out if they're going to give me their system or not, but its 50-50 for now, so i'm going to set this one up anyway)

 

 

2: How do I make a cutscene? Do you think you can link me to a guide or explain? I want to start the game with the general pokemon Intro, but then i want to start with a cutscene. Not sure how to work it. Any details would be cool.

 

3: Once i decide on my battle system i'll have alot of questions pertaining to setup and interface, but im sure we'll be able to find scripts online to make all that easier. So for now, these are my only concerns.

The guy with the battle system should get back to me within a day or so, hopefully with a yes, considering his system is amazing. If he does say yes though, it makes this a whole lot harder cuz it looks like you have to make more types of sprite movements and such. An example of the system can be found here:

 

Though it'll be harder to do things with i think in the long run its going to be a nicer fit to my game then the system above.

The beginning should play out like this so far to how i want things to go -

 

You wake up. head downstairs to find your mother gone, but the house is trashed. You walk outside..

*cutscene*

You wonder whats going on (Towns on fire and dead bodies here and there) You enter your rivals house to find his parents impaled and he's wounded up stairs.

You converse for a time. - You tell him you'll get help.

 

The other house is crumbled in on itself and you can't go in. You go to Prof Oaks to find him and the remaining people alive and defending themselves in what seems to be a last defense effort.

You converse for a bit, tell them about your rival - You and two others go to get him.

Outside, you can go towards his house but as you enter you are thrust into battle with the attacker on the village, a pokemon.

this is your first battle and its kinda like a tutorial battle.

you go save your rival, take him to Prof Oaks, explain whats going on - blah blah, and the story rolls on from there.

 

The cutscene would just take you to Prof Oaks, then from there you could walk with the guys following you to the rival's house, then in the house cutscene with the pokemon, then the battle.

Once i figured out how to make a few cutscenes then i'd have it down forever.

let me know what you think, of course this needs some tweaking.

 

 

Another question as i was fiddling with RPGXP-

how do you resize sprites?

I see that alot of these pokemon are too small to my liking.

The bigger ones should match their height description as close as they can, or as close as i can manage. any tips for resizing would be great.

 

And another question:

 

is there anyway to make it flow like a pokemon game when i mean like when you move to the edge of the screen it keeps on going? or is it like legend of zelda when you hit the end of the screen, it loads the next map.

Do you know what i mean? Like do i have to make a point to transfer to another map or can i make it constant like a pokemon game which never has to load another map, its all up to your movement what you see and where you go if you get me.

have you got photo-shop? all you gotta do is stretch the images but make sure they are still seperated on a 4x4 scale, if you dont have photo shop you can get gimp, its pretty much a free version with less functions, as for cutscenes you gotta event them, so you no the move route comands and the transer player, you gotta utilize these as auto run events, and then when the cutscene is done with, you need to make the event switch change to a blank box, look in the top left of the event page and click new page, now you got this new page it will automaticaly start as this unless you set a condition switch, so on the second event tab you need to set a condition switch to either a normal switch, which can switch multiple events or a self switch, the self switches only switch the event it is on, now you gotta put in the control switch, so when you have completed the event comand stick on a control switch "name" or self switch "A" please note the self switches only work within a set event and the normal switch will control multiple events baring there all set to that switch, the switches are what makes your comands work otherwise they will repeat thereselves other an other again, your story plot is sounding pretty decent, i would probably write up a basic plot line, then post it in the projects and teams part of the forum as people are only viewing this as a help post, so if you want lots more feedback this would be wise, you can always add screenshots and that later to the post to keep people interested in your game, also you could post in the resource requests part of the forum with the sprites you want resizing, if you are having problembs doing so, i would help but im at work on my own project at the min, so my time is limited when im not at work, i know that if you dont have photo shop and use gimp you may have problems resizing them as gimp sometimes stretches pixles out of place unless all the settings are right for what you want it for, people will always be happy to help where they can :)

edit- the script your having problems for is because it is in a demo for an older version of rpg maker and cannot be opened with newer versions, unless there is not an actual post of the script on the forum you got it from, or if the maker does not get back to you, you will have to source another script, there are lots that are similar so just have a search about, if you wanted to make a new aproach and have on map battles you would search for an abs battle system, but there a bit more advanced so be warned you will not have a easy ride with one of these

Nope don't got photoshop.

as for now I'm just going to terrain the maps and npcs and such and worry about battle system later. I do think i want to use that ABS, so ill just plan for it for now and slide it in later so i don't have to do the overly technical stuff now.

 

And as for my game yeah ill definitely post it there later today! been busy with work right now, i'll be sure to hop on that in a bit.

 

And another question:

the best way to do that would be to make your maps larger than they should and have your transer events closer in, i have no idea how pokemon do it but it would probably have to be scripted, and i know of none that exist
