Searing Hot USB Thumb Drive

Recommended Posts

I just plugged a usb microsd card reader -- with a 4GB micro SD card inside -- into my computer, and it tells me that the disk is unreadable. I unplug it about a minute later, and it was literally too hot to touch. I dropped the damn thing after unplugging it.

Later I pulled out the microSD card and its still warm.

WTF just happened. O_O

I just tried again. Took a few SECONDS to get flaming hot. I s**t you not, I just bent the card.

Never had that happen. You sure its the drive and not the USB port? USB ports shouldn't give off that much power to make it that hot.

If there is a short internally it could easily create that much heat. It doesn't take much power to create a substantial amount of heat when electricity is shorting out, and that sounds like that is your problem.

I wouldn't have even tried it the second time in fear of ruing my computer.

lol usb fail

its jsut as Forever said, or at least that's the msot likely reason. Also test other usb's as Pol said it could be the usb port itself rather than the usb input. If it still does it with anothe usb device then try one of the usb ports on the back of your desktop - oh and if it's a laptop or .. mac... then try each and every port to be certain

WOAH! WTF is wrong with this?! I'm lost, I really don't know. xD Just go buy a new one.

...What about the data on my old one? .-.

Yeah its the device. The second time it was in a different computer.

I already tried it on two computers. It's pretty much a demonic USB device.

Did you try it for another computer? Your computer maybe the issue, but you will never know until you use another thumb drive on the same computer.

Or you could do the more logical thing:

1) try another USB/Micro SD card and see if it does the same thing; if so it is the plug-in not the device. If it doesn't do it then it is the new device and not the plug in.

2) Call or take it back to store and explain what it is doing (if it is a laptop bring it with you to show them).

Yes. I've pretty much tried every possible combination. It is definitely the cardreader.

The second time I tried it was with a different microSD card. Still hot as hell.

Frankly I doubt they'd care. :< Plus the real problem is getting my data back. Which is definitely impossible.

Well I only suggested it if it was an issue with the device, but it sound like it's your computer.

So get it fixed!

Take it into the store and ask for a refund. If they don't accept returns then tell them that the product they sold is defective.
