New Project: Knight Academy

Recommended Posts

Well, the past couple months have been hard for me. I've been having trouble with a job (isn't everyone these days) and I've been bored and almost depressed for the past couple months. well, now I've gotten out of that rut, and now I am getting back into RMXP, just like I wanted to before. And I finally have started a project I think I can fully complete, since I have a clear idea of what is going to happen. I actually have two projects I'm thinking about doing, however, one of them I may not be able to do if it ends up in book form. The other I've started now which is Knight Academy.

Story:

You are Richie, a young, vibrant archer who's ready to begin training to become a warrior. Richie is native to Corbor, a mid-sized region with a few hills, and a couple caves. You are partnered with Crystal, an excited neighbor. You both start your journey in the square just below the castle of the King and Queen. You enter the castle, and in a matter of a few minutes is a new student under the King and Queen's watchful eye.

You start working hard to prove yourself as a viable and reliable warrior, who hopes one day to be able to help defend his own town. Corbor is victim to petty theft crimes almost daily, and the Kings of the past implemented a law which requires all mid- to large-sized towns to have at least one guardian to watch over the town. Small towns are highly recommended to have guardians, but are not required.

Richie's studies take him to the borders of Corbor, including a fire cave, a wind cave, a deep forest, and other extravigant locations. As he travels, they must solve minor mysteries, puzzles in each town, and maybe a few required missions to progress.

Screenshots:

(Coming soon...)

Credits:

enterbrain for their fantastic tilesets they ship with RMXP. I'm using default at the moment, but may search for other tilesets.

What I need help with:

A logo and title screen for this game. I am terrible at making logos, and if anyone is interested, I am looking for a medieval-like logo that incoperates the title Knight Academy, a sword, and/or a shield. If anyone's interested, please send me a pm, or you can post a photo here of a logo that I might be looking for.

I'm glad you're back.

I can't wait to see the screen shots.

thanks guys. I've had enough of feeling like a useless glob, so I got myself out of the house and I've started work at burger king, ugh. BTW, I'm trying to use Fraps to record a demo of my game, but it keeps giving me a DirectX 9 error, saying it failed to initialize it. I'm staring at it going ??? I have directx 11, what do you mean you can't initialize it? I may just ignore it until I get my own laptop. Been borrowing my father's for several months now after I destroyed my last one.

Anyone happen to have an idea of what this could mean? Also with my screenshots for the game, when I get to it later tonight, I feel like I'm doing generic detailing cause it somehow doesn't feel right. When I post them tonight, I think you'll see what I mean.

Ok, here are some preliminary screenshots of what I think will be the most common areas, the main town, a level of the first dungeon, and the castle main hall.

Cool project.. But I am most concerned about your interior mapping. You've used the wall tiles all wrong.. There is an autotile you are supposed to fill the map with and then put your walls down according to the way your house/map is supposed to look. You should totally check out some mapping tutorials when you get the time, they should benefit you.. Maybe check out willowsidhe's youtube tutorials(http://www.youtube.com/user/willowsidhe).

That aside, pretty cool project: Keep it up! :)

I had a feeling I wasn't doing the interiors correctly, thanks. To me it probably looked fine, but once I see that tutorial, I'll probably be saying, what was I thinking doing it that way?

Slightly off topic here, my other project I think I'll do is actually taking the form of a novel first. Tonight at midnight begins Nanowrimo, a contest to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Normally this contest is held in November, but this year, they're doing a Camp Nanowrimo, which begins July 1st. I have decided to participate in it this year with my father, who at the moment is working hard to try and get his book published. If you want, you can track my progress here:

http://www.campnanowrimo.org/campers/koban442

That page will be updated daily, so it's always up to date on my progress. This is going to be fun, writing a 50,000+ word novel, an in-progress RMXP game, and work. July for me is going to be buuuuusssssssyyyyyy. :biggrin_002:

Here's an update on my maps. this is the room your player will be starting the game in.

This is better than my last rendition of the player's room I think. More screenshots later.

That does not look to bad but here are some mistakes in my opinion:

room1h.png

Let me explain the scribbles

Red: To my eyes that kind of looks like they are floating :shok:. I would suggest moving those down 1

Blue: To me it looks weird like that either had side wall parts to them or make doors in the event layer.

Black: Idk why but that looks weird being so close to the floor, you might want to move that up one and maybe put something under it.

Lastly be careful with the size of the houses you make I noticed for the outside part you only did 1 auto tile space all the way around. I know part of my problem when I really sucked at mapping was my houses where to big and there was not enough cover objects.

I'm not an expert in mapping so you might want someone elses opinion but thats whats urging me about that one.

That aside I do like the initial start of what you have for your project. Though I can not say much I will keep an eye out for when you add some more stuff, so best of luck to you :alright:.

Edit: Make sure you edit the initial post with screenies some people will only look there for them.

thanks. Those areas are being corrected. I'm a little slow on the story and mapping so I'll update when I can.

Ok, I'm stuck. With the story that is. I've been busy writing my novel so I haven't had a chance to write my story for this game. But now I realize why. I don't have a story. I've made the biggest mistake any game designer can make, twice. I've started mapping randomly without any clue as to where I'm going. Big mistake. Now I have to get out of RMXP and start thinking about where I need to go with this story, if I can salvage what I've done so far, cause I really don't want to start over again.

I wanted to keep the story a secret until I was deep into the project, and I was certian I was going to finish it. But That's not happening if I don't have a story to follow. I'm going to share the main aspects of what I want in my story for this project, and I'm asking for your help to develop a story from the points I have.

Name: Knight Academy

Mostly gives the name of the setting here, so the main setting is a medieval school.

Main Objective: clear all 5 dungeons in the castle and successfully make it through the Graduate Dungeon to graduate from the academy.

SubObjectives: Successfully complete the 2 dungeons outside the castle walls and any mysteries or puzzles in the neighboring towns.

Final Boss Battle: (This may change, though this is what I'm planning now.) The queen and King at the end of the Graduate Dungeon.

I at least want to incoperate these elements into the story, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what. Please if any of you could help me with this story, that would be great. You will be credited obviously for collaberating with the story idea.

Thank you for any help you can give.
