Mapping - Sunny Forest Tutorial

Recommended Posts

Map Type: Sunny Forest

Map Size: 23X19

How to do

Since many of the nature types map has the same mapping system, it's pretty easy to make a Sunny Forest map. This type of map is my kind of favorite, so it's an honor to teach it out.

First of all, make a little road. Since it's a forest, don't make the road straight. It dosen't look realistic, and looks very.....ulgy.

The road works on all layers, but it should be in the first layer.

You could have a little river going through the forest. But not so big, just a little one. If you are planning to have a big one, make it in different forms, and not just a big straight one. You could also use the fallen trees as bridges.

Next, it's time for trees, flowers, grass and stones. You could have the flowers, trees and stones on the third layer, so they can stand on the grass, but I recomend to have the trees on the second layer. Also, you could have a darker part of the grass on the first layer.

Now, you think that the map is very empty. But Im not done yet.

Now, on the third layer, it's time to put out the Tree autotile.

Now, you could have some fogs, animals, and stuff like that. It's very fun to make forests maps, and I enjoy it alot.

And here's one I have done.

As I like to say. " Mapping is Imagination".

Using the canopy autotile usually results in lazy mappers... which is one of the things you DON'T want to have. From personal experience, it's better to start learning to place those trees, using the layers to their fullest use. It gives your maps a more professional look too.

Yeah, but I made this tutorial a long time ago, and I have learned new ways of mapping since then. But this is just the basics.

Great even though this is the basic. I found a new idea of making the forest. Actually, I want put an array of trees, but, it's extremely difficult and takes a long time.

Could you help me, Black Shadow?

Rookie mistake #1 - the tree canopy autotile, never use it - EVER

Rookie mistake #2 - the tree leaf shadow fog thing, never use it either - EVER. Its use suggest that there are giant leaves above the rest of the trees casting huge shadows.

@earthboy - do not use an array of trees, trees in nature grown in bunches and forests are usually dominated by one type of tree, with mabye 1 or 2 smaller, less competative tree types growing here and there.

Trainspotter, you necroposted something over a year ago. Please don't do this. It makes people (like me) think there is something added to the tutorial, or whatever topic is necro-bumped.

Also, this is Blackshadow's class. If he wants to teach people to map like this, then he can do it all he wants. Don't tell the teacher how to teach is basically what I am saying. Many people have their own styles, plus, what's the point of a class if everyone butts in?

I'm sure Blackshadow would like criticism, but you're telling not to tell us what to do. It doesn't matter if you are right, that's the kind of stuff that belongs in PMs.
