New Game Idea. Opinions?

Not sure if I put this in the right place or not but we'll just say it goes here for now.

 

So, I usually have two projects I'm working on at a time, to keep me busy or so I don't get bored with the other one. Currently, I only have Crescent Moon that I am working on. The game is very messy at the moment with all the plot/character changes, and honestly, I want to trash it. But I won't, I've come too far on the project to just give everything up. I had another project, I was working on it with VX, basically just to toy with VX more, but I really am not getting anywhere with that. I don't even really like it anyway. So, I am pretty sure I'm giving up development on that.

But anyway, the reason I made this topic, is because I have another idea and thought it would be a good time to take a break and work on another one. (Frequent breaks always help me.)

 

THE IDEA:

I'm basing this game off my book I've been working on for recreational purposes whenever I'm in a write-esk mood. The book is basically a mash-up of , Harry Potter,Bran Hambric, and Skullduggery Pleasent only set in a Medieval-ish time.(The book is based in Modern Dublin, but I feel a better taste would be acquired if it was set in Medieval-ish time , as the lot of RPG's are set in this time period).

Basically, in a nutshell, your name is Alistair. You have blood in you belonging to your ancestor, the so-called greatest Magixist(Mage/Wizard) in the world, Berarus Vex.

Shinia, an evil Magixist, has stolen Vex's wand. His wand holds the greatest power known to man(Cliche part right there). If Shinia learns how to wield the power of Vex correctly, who knows what could happen. Possibly world domination.(More cliche)

 

That's some of what I have, the rest is pretty much WIP.

 

WIP STUFF:

Wands: Wands are different in this. They hold power which can be basically, sucked into you, so you can wield magic that way. They're like power-cases. Tell me what you like about this. Yes or no?

 

Possibly the time period. I am mostly set on Medieval but I could use your guys' opinions.

 

Spell names. So far I have:

shoot fireballs/stream of fire/fire attack

stoho fsriebslsl

 

make person turn to ashes

asesh

 

set fire to object

tse erif

 

The way I made these up is quite obvious.

 

More to come if you guys like this idea.

 

PROBLEMS:

Would you play this game? Yes/No.

 

Does what I have sound cool/interesting?

 

What engine should this utilize?

Constructive criticism is a must please.

Any ideas are welcome.

To be honest I wouldn't play the game. I'm not interested in anything Harry Potter related nor based on.

 

What kinds of troubles are you having with VX?

None. I'm just having issues deciding which engine to use.

And as for the Harry Potter part, I wouldn't see as an HP game. Considering it incorporates a lot of other ideas from many other things.

I LOVE Skullduggery Pleasant! I'm really glad to hear your encorperating ideas from that series :) I like the game concept, over all. Whilst cliche with the whole "all-the-power-in-the-universe" and "uh oh evil guys gettin' in", sometimes you can overcome these cliches. In my oppinion, as long as the game isn't entirely cliche (unless its a joke game) a few cliches here and there are fine. One thing that I kinda don't like is how you've done the spell names. I know what your aiming for :P And the spell names sound rather Harry Potter-ish, but for some reason I just dont seem to like it... -shrug- If thats the feel your going for (the Harry Potter-ish one), then you've succeeded with the spell names.

 

I like the concepts of the wands, too :) But you should really specify that the power is only in you as long as your wielding the wand (an easy thing to do with events in XP and VX). Perhaps Vex's wand has certain locks or boobytraps built into it so its harder for Shinia to gain access to its power? Maybe then the more powerful wands could also have something similiar to this to kind of have a level on the wands to use them.

 

As for XP or VX, I really couldn't tell ya. I'd say XP, just because I like XP more, really. I've used it for over 3 years now and I just dont seem to like VX that much in comparison. VX has its good points, but in my eyes XP is still the best.

Ah, thank you for your insight. I'm glad to see someone else likes Skullduggery as much as me. :P

And, I was thinking the same thing for the wands. I like the idea for Vex's. As for the spell names, I see why you don't like them. They could be changed, I might not stick with them.

Also, I think I am doing XP for this one.

what kind of gameplay? TBS, RTAB? ATB?

I have no idea about that either. What would you recommend for a game like this?

Yeah. Possibly an ABS? Xas is the best, but requires tons of editing. Maybe...

I've decided on a system for the game. RTAB. It really gives the taste of an old RPG.

Please keep ideas coming people.

I like the central idea here. I also like how you are changing it up with the wands. I'm also very found of the mid-evil period. I personally don't like the ABS and would suggest SVBS. However I kinda wonder where you are gonna go storyline wise with this.You have to be careful with this, especially in a sensitive area, story lines are one of the most important area. Also imo adding wierd looking names to spells makes it no more better imo, sometimes it frustrates me because who the hell yells out what there gonna do before doing it :P. It's like just a heads up enemy I'm gonna fireball you now :D. It also does not make much sense to me since the magic is bein drawn inward but its your stuff, its whatever you wanna do either way best of luck to ya.

Your criticism has been noted upon. :) I think I'm sticking with RTAB though. I probably will change the names of spells, but I do kind of like the idea of casting spells with words + your wand. Only, this time, your wand is like a power case.

I'm not sure if i would play this or not without more detail into this, maybe once started a little teaser? I'm always a lot more convinced to play or give criticism on something i can actually get a feel of ^.^ but from what i can tell it sounds like a pretty good idea i would just like to hear more.
