Should the new site restart the entire forums?

Recommended Posts

Marked is working on the new site. Do you think he should restart the forums? Should it have a new beginning?

I think it may be the best idea to restart the forums. The site and forum will have a new identity. Marked is making it into a development forum instead of a forum focused on XP. We have many members who are signed up but are not active. Some forums appear to be dead.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :o

Restarting the forums would slash our userbase and actually render our already somewhat dismally forum activity into something akin to the crab nebula, beautiful, cold and somewhat empty.

A restructure/reorganization would be fine but restarting would make us appear similar to all those new up and coming rpgmaker forums, which are like protostars popping up in a dying galaxy.

Rmxp is like our sun, reliable with a couple of years under its belt and stability.

Trust me a forum migration can be a community killer especially around times of low activity. I know from experience.

Yep I think we should and all the active members should stay and just see who comes in. We are trying to broaden our development but not just focusing on rmxp anymore

I understand the love of keeping the older stuff, but to all due respect to it (and remember, things like The Perjurer and Al'asuiaga'ta is also included), nobody here checks that stuff out anymore. And according to my views, lurkers hardly do it either. Start it from scratch gets mah' vote.

The sun is going to die eventually and if we don't want to die with it then we can't be dependent on it.

I think you would be surprised about that. Lurkers and members only read the new stuff, but when people find the site from google searches then the post date is pretty irrelevant. I think that as long as the content is useful, it's going to continue to get views. for example:

Whether or not to start over has already been decided and is pretty set in stone, but im still interested in seeing what other members think :)

i dont know what to think about this. im happy with what we have here, but we are kinda dying. we're like a light bulb that flickers every minute or so. not yet a constant flicker, but still a flicker. However, if we change the lightbulb, things might be different. But we don't want to look like one of the new sites that are popping up, because everyone else is doing it either. If we could find a happy medium, we could really pick this site up off it's death bead

excuse the medefores lol "everyone else was doing it" :P

New site? What? I didn't know about this!

I don't want a new site, I love this one!

Really? You're kinda inactive these days arn't you Crimson? :P (or am I just not seeing you online?). Don't worry, anything good about the site will still be there is some form.

Usually my suggestion topics don't get too much attention, but you can post suggestions here: http://www.rmxpunlimited.net/forums/topic/6980-rmxpu-idea-dump/ (it sounds like you have some :D ) I pretty much know what I want to do. Whether I do it though is another question, one of motivation and whether its really worth it. But in saying 'I know what i want to do' I'm more than happy to consider all suggestions of the community.

I suppose the question here is whether or not starting over with new members, topics etc. will help boost activity in the long-run. I'm certain it will in the short-run, everyone loves a new site and being one of the first posters.

This site's number one problem is XP. It never changed to a site that featured both XP and VX. Staff didn't help with this either they only focused on XP. That's pretty sad.

I say let us not leave our heritage here. Maybe change just the gateway name and home page; add some extra forums for other developing systems... but don't frag it all. You do that, and you could, conceivably, LOSE more members than gain. Brand new forums almost never make it past the first 12 months, and most visitors, when they come to the new site, would see 'it's a new forum with not much. must not be THAT good' and if the current members still post as oft as they do now, it won't exactly grow fast...

Some changes, yes, but DON'T delete it all. You will cause irreversable damage that way.

If you're gonna say something like that you gotta back it up. Explain, with examples.

Staff members did little to nothing for VX. I uploaded 90% of the VX resources, and I'm not a staff member. The vast majority of the scripts are for XP. Nisage posted the majority of the few VX scripts. Not a single staff member made a game for VX. The staff members pretty much worked on XP. However, you also didn't recruit new staff members to focus on VX. Didn't you make a VX homepage that redirected to this forum?

He should keep the resources, scripts, starter kits, and tutorials. Just about everything else should be new.

Okay, first, the VX support side: Yes, vast majority of resources are for XP. it's been around a few years longer, AND most people are better acquainted with it, plus prefer it. Further, it's not the staff's fault that there are few resources and scripts given to the site by members for VX. You can't blame them.

As for hiring staff members for VX, there are all ready a lot of staff members for what you guys call a 'failing site'. Too many cooks spoil the eggs. Last thing we need is new staff right now.

Yes, we need to have better support for VX, people who can help if anyone has questions. But in my experience, only 1/5 people who join the site ask for VX, 3 ask for XP, and the remainder ask for any other random engine.

As for the second point: We shouldn't delete the posts either. Its our history, and part of our identity. Removing any of em would be terrible.

I dont think we should remove any content we have now. If we remove what we have people will look at the site as dead(even knowing its new) and wont even bother joining.

If we keep what we have people will see were an active community and join the community the be apart of it and maybe they will introduce a game maker they use and get others to sue it and bring other users that use that maker. Starting fresh will just kill us even more, if not all the way.

I say we keep all our content. It will help up start the other site up. Cant run a ship that has no fuel or it will be very slow :P.

if we remove things, it wont get better. if we do nothing, nothing will change. if we add, and change things a bit, it will get better. we should keep all the topics and forums, change the name to something that, instead of saying "this is a site for rmxp users" says, "Hey look! this is a great community for anyone who like making stuff!" and try to be more active. post more, post helpful things, and try to post less in the spam forum(i'll start on that :P otherwise i sound like a hypocrite)

I think we should get rid of the spam area completely. Gets way to overused and makes us look like a spam community.

I think that getting rid of the forums that we have now would cause irreparable damage to the community. I think we should as Pol said, get rid of the spam forums, and then start to reorganise and restructure the forums; getting rid of anything that is irrelevant or no longer needed to help the site progress (pruning basically).

It is not the staffs fault that they do not use VX. It's my fault I didn't make any member a staff member who uses VX, but to be honest, I don't really care what engine they don't use. It's never been a task of the staff members to upload resources and post scripts and tutorials, otherwise we wouldn't have a forum at all, we would just have a website. The staff is small anyway, do you think, for example, if Nisage was a moderator that would have changed anything?

As for accompanying VX, you will find as many places to post your VX stuff as you will XP.

So what is staff's job?

Monitor the forums, delete post, move post other stuff.

Same as a manager really. We make sure members are being good and not breaking rules, we make sure things are in the right places and people are not doing illegal things on the site.

Staff members are here to help members with the site and forums. Nothing to do with putting content up.

We are no different than a normal member and shouldn't be treated different. We just have the power to help others and keep peace.

Ummm......That sounds like a mod. I know what you guys do. I'm talking about the members who are labeled as staff.

I also plan to be a reviewer because I prefer that to teaching and stuff

Although I am envious of the cool icons you guys have

We should totally get an advance member group

Maybe in a certain period. Lately things have been inactive, not all of us can be active, and overall over all the years the staff have been very active in support. But again, a forum is for helping each other, its not up to the staff to post in your topics. You probably meant that in way that reflects your contribution and not our lack of contribution, so just saying. The staff members have put in so much effort.. just try and tell Kiriashi otherwise, he'd even scold me if I said that :P

@Marked: Yea, I'm pretty inactive. I'm been preparing for college, studying Linguistics, working and writing. Its been a busy year for me. :sweatdrop:

Well, as long as it remains the same where it matters, I guess I don't mind :)

"And when he was done, God looked at the mess he made and upon his own hand he destroyed the world he created to start anew. However, when he finished he realized he had only made things worse,"

Starting anew would be more harmful then helpful to any community. I saw this happen to the SMP (Super Mario Portal); largest Mario Fan site. They restarted twice and the second time they changed their name and now they are no longer the largest Mario/Nintendo fan site.
