What features do you look for in game making software?

It could be anything from stock resources to the genre, ease of use etc. What are the most important features that you want to know about before considering trying new game making software?

Few reasons why i bought RMXP over other makers and what i mainly look for when searching for programs/makers.

> Easy to use GUI.(Hated game maker)

> Tons of examples and resources that come with it(Sample game).

> It has a trial that is not limited in features. Whats the point in paying for features that you don't know if they will fit your needs?

> Has a nice user base. Don't want to buy something that is nearly dead or to new to have anything useful out to learn from.

> Has consistent updates that add new features.

> Has an optional programming Language.

Thats about it.

Resources is a major factor. A game community without spriters can be very weak. It's cool to make RTP games, but 100 of them can get boring.

An unlimited license is a huge key. I don't want to experience hardware failure and have to repurchase a license. Some programs can be expensive.

I only know of one official sample game.

The RPG Maker series don't fit in this category.

Correct, I've seen maybe one update and that was for the XP back in 2005 to fix one small error out of the many others.

Yeah but you have to understand that it has a successor. The updates certainly are not frequent, but that are existent. The VX materials pack is one example, and in fact did you guys know the latest version of RMXP is 1.0.4.0? (or is that just new to me? I haven't downloaded XP in like 3-4 years).

I'm actually going to use the info in this topic so keep the posts coming if you can :)

That's the issue. Look at game maker, yes you have to re-download new versions, but once you buy it you get new updates at no cost. RPG Maker Series, just bust out new software with limited features, removal of features, etc.

Thats why i said a few reasons why i bought RMXP and what i look for.

There all not based on why i bought RMXP. 90% why i bought RMXP and the rest of the 10% is what else i look for in a maker.

My fav maker of all time that has almost all features i like is rpg toolkit. I loved it back in the day when it actually got updated every week. Now its kind of dead.

If RPG maker had more of the stuff that has it would be way better.
