Bigace360 38 Report post Posted August 24, 2011 (edited) Anyone hear about the earthquake on the eastcoast. I was at Kings Dominon when it happened at 2:50 sitting at the water park. At first I thought some fat kids were running by or something, but then obviously that wasn't true. 5 minutes later, the announcement went off telling everyone the water park was close. Now that all the all the rides are close now also, we have to leave because by time the get all the rides started up again it would be closing time anyways. I feel bad for all the people stuck in trafic coming from d.c. Also heard the metro was moving like 15miles per hour. You might as well walk? Anyways the Earthquake was somewhere in richmond and was a 5.8, not close to what mark or Japan had but since the east coast of U.S. rarely has earthquakes I didn't know what that was. Technically unless you were in mineral virginia or close to it, you weren't feeling much. I live in springfield so the damage was a picture frame falling. However I did here the washington monument was damage during the quake. More news about here on MSN: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44245009/ns/us_news-life/t/congress-pentagon-other-dc-areas-evacuate-after-quake/?GT1=43001 Edited August 24, 2011 by bigace
Marked 197 Report post Posted August 24, 2011 5.8's pretty decent. Got any idea what the depth is? People can be ignorant of what a quakes true power is. The are several variables including depth and the type of slip. Also that the difference between each magnitude (eg between 5 and 6) is 33 times the amount of energy. Also Japan's quake was big and all, but it was way out in the sea and the real damage came from the tsunami generated at the epicenter. I was talking in chat a few months back when a 5.7 hit followed by a 6.3 an hour later, both under 10km deep. At first I thought some fat kids were running by or something, but then obviously that wasn't true Lmao I thought my first quake (7.1 that struck at 4am) was an aeroplane crashing down from the sky outside my house. I sleep in a sleepout and when the fist thing dropped I run outside to see the place lit by powerlines colliding into each other. I just froze and was like what the.... My parents had to inform me that it was a quake.
Enigma 10 Report post Posted August 24, 2011 Actually I thought this was an earthquake on the west coast my mind thought east = west so I didnt pay much attention to it, but then I read what big ace said and I was like  D.C isnt on the west coast East Coasts earthquakes are rare, first time im hearing about it Apparently Hurricane Irene is also heading toward D.C instead of texas, where they usually go because of the friggen gulf of mexico Im so used to hurricanes and storms that the past years without them feel weird In fact a lot of ppl are mad because of the LACK of rain (damn drought) that be killin teh grass Looks like congress has really pissed off God or somethin maybe virginia was a warning shot, hopefully no one got hurt

Pretty much all it says on the quake its self is the magnitude. Probably will have to search around the web for it. Sorry. Mineral VA, was the epicenter so any info on the depth maybe with them. maybe virginia was a warning shot, hopefully no one got hurt I think only mineral Va and the people near the washington monument got hurt. Every where else in VA, was like a minor/tiny damage like a picture falling off my wall.
kellessdee 48 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 Whoa, I didn't hear about this one until recently, and apparently it actually had hit Ontario (albeit very weak) and I slept through it. Glad to see you're okay though, and that your house was too far away for real damage. I think this is the second (that I know of, in my liftime) earthquake to hit Ontario, and I think I slept through both of them. Not that it's a bad thing, as I am very grateful that not very many natural disasters hit Canada. If anything, I would say Mother Earth is just fed up with Human kind in general; but that's a completely different matter :o

Marked 197 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 Or its her time of the century :o lmao. Did many people get hurt in the quake? 5.8 is relatively small I guess (clearly not for the east coast though) but will take some stuff of the walls.
Bigace360 38 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) lmao. Did many people get hurt in the quake? 5.8 is relatively small I guess (clearly not for the east coast though) but will take some stuff of the walls. The quake ruptured a water pipe inside the Pentagon, flooding parts of two floors. Around 7:30 p.m. EST, the National Park Service reopened the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials to the public, but officials decided to keep the Washington Monument closed. After a secondary inspection, NPS officials discovered some cracking in the stones near the top of the monument. Structural engineers will be brought in to evaluate the cracks. There were no reports of deaths or serious injuries. The quake was tied for third strongest along the East Coast in recorded history, USGS records show. Charleston, S.C., was hit by a 7.3 in 1886 and Giles County, Va., saw a 5.9 in 1897. A 5.8 quake struck New York state in 1944. Several hours after the first earthquake, a 4.2 magnitude aftershock hit in Mineral, Va., just after 8 p.m., EST, according to USGS. At the U.S. Capitol, light fixtures swung and the building shook for about 15 seconds while the tremor hit The 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building. In Mineral, the roof of the town hall collapsed in the quake. Info about the EastCoast: East Coast earthquakes are far less common than in the West, but they tend to be felt over a broad area. That's because the crust is not as mangled and fractured, allowing seismic waves to travel without interruption. All this info is off of MSN. 'Hey East Coast, the entire West Coast is mocking you right now' http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44253736/ns/us_news-life/?ocid=ansmsnbc11 Appearently the eastcoast is a laughing stock of the U.S. said the Westcoast and I don't blame them for laughing either. People aren't to be fleeing buildings during an earthquake, there supposed to be finding something strong to hide under while staying away from windows, bookshelves, or anything heavy that can fall or shatter or both. Then again, they don't teach us that over here since earthquakes are very rare over here. Most of the stuff they teach are like flash floods, Hurricans, and fire drill (duh). So unless your from an area that is prone to earthquakes Japan, Alaska or most of the westcoast U.S., Australia, etc most people's common reaction is to act retarted and run ignorantly out of buildings without making sure its safe. Marked 197 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 I actually skimmed that article when you fist posted it. Thank you for that effort lol you must have gotten real sick of me asking all these questions lol I was more asking for your personal experience. Yeah its very stupid to run outside. Lets just say that no where is a certainty and the only thing you can do is reduce the risk. Chances are your screwed anyway. In our quakes there was a family in a brick house. One guy run outside (was close to the door) and got crushed. The others got under a table and the bricks crushed them. They all died. If something heavy is gona hit you then its likely the whole place is coming down and you're gona need some luck. Australia No, you mean New Zealand :pinch: We are on the boundary of 2 tectonic plates (the pacific and the indo-Australasian or something). We're on the ring of fire. Australia is sitting pretty in the middle of a plate and rarely gets quakes. Though they do get quakes and have had devastating ones. They have their own natural disasters to deal with... http://chzmemeafterdark.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/naughty-memes-very-demotivational-aww-stralia.jpg (contains swearing, avert your eyes youngins)

Everywhere else your screwed, I think the extreme heat place is probably the safest. Just say inside, but it's probably freezing at night. I keep forgetting New zealand is on its own plate and not the same as Australia. Also I just felt another tremor at 1:10 while sitting at my computer. WTF is going, but at least this was like 30 seconds compared to tuesday :(
Marked 197 Report post Posted August 25, 2011 I keep forgetting New zealand is on its own plate and not the same as Australia. We're small but we're a different country  for example, australians suck at rugby. :biggrin_002: Also I just felt another tremor at 1:10 while sitting at my computer. WTF is going, but at least this was like 30 seconds compared to tuesday :( Ah, aftershock sequence. I didn't think a 5.8 would cause any aftershocks. Don't worry, they'll all be really small. The general rule is the biggest aftershock will be 1 magnitude smaller. I admit that I did not go back to sleep after our 7.1 and I had a pretty sleepless night after the much more violent 6.3. Our 7.1 triggered 2 6.3's all on different faults and 181 deaths, with 8,400 aftershocks since September the 4th 2010 which you can watch here: http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/all Sorry if I come off like an attention-whore with the quakes, it was pretty traumatic :/
