RMXP Won't Start up HELP

Question

Well, I didn't use RMXP for awhile, for about 1-2 months at most. (I was playing some MMORPGs) And I decided to start working on my game again. However, when I click the icon for the RMXP program, nothing happens! I tried uninstalling and resinstalling but still the same thing. I went into the properties, Run for Windows XP (Service Pack 2) was still selected and Run as Adminstrator was still checked.

WHAT DO I DO, I really want to work on my game, but the program wont start up!

You mean it does absolutely nothing? No error messages or anything?

Some things to try:

1. Try starting it by clicking directly on the RPGXP.exe in the Program Files directory if you have not already.

2. Uninstall and reinstall. If this does not work, its likely you have some screwed up settings somewhere.

Are you using the legal version or the illegal version.

I think he's tried those already as said in the OP.

I'm an idiot, totally missed that :P

Uninstall, then open regedit and delete the following folders:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Protexis

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Enterbrain (or just the RGSS and RPGXP subfolders if you have other RM by Enterbrain installed)

Now set the properties of the RMXP INSTALLER to run in compatibility mode for XP, and re-install.

Set the properties of RPGXP.exe the same way, and run as Admin.

Note: You can open regedit by opening "Run" or a command prompt and simply typing "regedit" and hitting Enter. Or just type it into the search box in the Start menu.

There is either something wrong on your OS, or with the installation program. It is on of the two. At the absolute least, you should get a crash, an ntitles, ...something. The fact that the program fails to launch at all or even try to run is not good.

Some more questions:

Do other applications start up normally?

What OS are you using? Vista or Win7?

I am running Win7 x64, and RMXP does not require me to run as admin, nor in compatibility mode. I used to have to do this in Vista, but for some reason not in Win7, though it still needs run as admin for at least the first time when inserting you activation code. Try variations of not running in compatibility mode and not as admin, and see if you get any luck.

This is really really odd.

Can you post you computer's specs? It may be easier to get to the bottom of this if we know what hardware you are using.

Have you checked if the process even starts? Run rpg maker, ctrl-atl-delete > task manager (or right click on task bar > task manager) Then select the processes tab and look for RPGXP.exe or whatever and see if the process is even running. If it is running...I am still not sure what the issue could be...but what I would try next is: end all processes associated with rpg maker, or restart the computer, clear all temporary files (I believe you have to right click the C drive (local disk) and there should be a button which clears temp files (i think it's on the first tab, but it might be in a different tab, I would check but I am not on windows atm). Then retry. Can't say it will work for sure, but you never know.

If the process doesn't even run, then it would mean windows isn't even starting the process. If that's the case, the only thing I can think of here is trying to make windows start it... Try running it through "run" from your start menu (like fZer0 was talking about), or even better run it from command prompt.

COMMAND PROMPT

change to the directory containing RPGXP.exe, by default it is c:\program files\enterbrain\rpgxp (32 bit windows) or c:\program files (x86)\enterbrain\rpgxp (64 bit windows) then run rpgxp.exe from the prompt.

cd c:\program files\enterbrain\rpgxp

or (if you are running 64 bit windows)

cd c:\program files (x86)\enterbrain\rpgxp

hit enter, then enter this and hit enter again:

rpgxp.exe

(windows is not case-sensitive, so you don't need to worry about capital letters, etc.)

Can't promise this will help, but It's what I would do if I was in your situation.

Maybe, Cnet doesn't have the latest version of rpg maker? It shouldn't be an issue, but you could also try getting rpg maker xp from enterbrain directly:

Okay, I did eveything you told me but it still does the same thing (I click, load cursor comes up for about 10 seconds, and then stops) I even waited for 30 minutes or so but still nothing. I did a system restore to how far back i could go and clicked on RPGXP but it told me i needed an installation CD. I just reinstalled it again and it began to do the same thing before the restore.

I've been on RPG Maker VX for awhile, and well... It's just not as good as XP in my opinion. (Mapping anyway)

Oh, downloaded it from the link Kell and installed it. It gives me "rgss.something is not on your computer." so I uninstalled it and reinstalled with Cnets, and still the same problem as before. Should also mention that if I take any files out of the RMXP folder it says "RPG Maker XP could not start cause -file- is not on your computer"

I think what its doing is it starts up and crashes (Exiting out of the program)

Rgss10xE.dll is missing? Have you installed the rpg maker xp rtp? You need both the rtp and rmxp.exe in order to use rpg maker xp. (both are available on the RPG Maker website)

Yeah, that could be it.

Try putting this in the same directory of your game and running it: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20787370/RMXP/RGSS102E.dll

If that makes it work, move it to the install directory so you don't have to copy it to every project folder.

Well, I could never get RMXP to start back up again. So I'm sticking with RMVX for awhile. Luckily I got Mack's tileset and some XP Tree Charsets (I love that btw. Forests look SO AWESOME) I'm keeping my XP files for when I get another comp. That's cause I can transfer my files of XP and put them on my Dad's computer and It starts up just fine. Thanks for the help guys!

And yeah, Guess "The Chronicles of Alador" will be a VX project... for now... :alright:
