Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted November 7, 2011 Reader, Alright so on a writing forum we are debating what is Science Fiction and Fantasy. By the knowledge you know please answer the questions above to what you belive them to be. v/Respectfully, Noob Saibot EDIT I will add that STAR WARS is big on THE FORCE (found in all 6 movies and cartoons); it is the BINDING truth. They do not talk or explain the SCIENCE behind their technology as in Star Trek. So Star Wars is a Fantasy or at the least Science Fantasy. What the Hell Is STAR WARS Anyway — Science Fiction or Fantasy? Is Star Wars Fantasy or Science Fiction Star Wars FAQ: Is Star Wars Sci-Fi or Fantasy? Star Wars is not Science Fiction Is Star Wars science fiction or fantasy?
Bigace360 38 Report post Posted November 7, 2011 Star Trek: (Science Fiction) Self explainatory Star Wars:(Science Fantasy) Its based off a galaxy far far away, which makes it fantasy and then it has a whole bunch of science stuff & mythologis in it. X-Menu: (Science Fantasy) Deals with a lot of science (Human mutation, anatomy, other computer stuff) and its in a Fantasy 21st century earth (we dont have any mutatans with super powers running around) and some mythology as well (mainly Apocalypse's storyline). Thats my 2cents

Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted November 7, 2011 When asking a question such as this it is best to clearly define each choice. Without doing that you are merely polling peoples opinions on the definitions of the choices, rather then how they think each show fits into the categories presented. In any event you said: I will add that STAR WARS is big on THE FORCE (found in all 6 movies and cartoons); it is the BINDING truth. They do not talk or explain the SCIENCE behind their technology as in Star Trek. So Star Wars is a Fantasy or at the least Science Fantasy. That is basically not true, Midi-chlorians are a microorganism first mentioned in The Phantom Menace. They are microscopic life-forms that reside within the cells of all living things and communicate with the Force.[/url] The Jedi have learned how to listen to and coordinate the midi-chlorians. While every living being thus has a connection to the Force, one must have a high enough concentration of midi-chlorians in one's cells in order to be a Jedi or a Sith. Creator George Lucas says that the midi-chlorians are based on the endosymbiotic theory. You can not assume the force is 'magic' as there is at least one fictitious scientific fact that relates the use of the force to a measurable chemical compound, further more the writer based it off of real scientific theory. I am a trekkie, and prefer the Roddenberry verse over the Lucas verse, but in any event I enjoy both and am well informed on the two. As far as no science behind their technology, you need to read some star wars official books, or play some of their table top stuff. There is TONS of scientific explanation behind their technology. Star wars is definitely science fiction, it's simply more fiction than star trek and borrows from fantasy elements. It is my opinion that this discussion needs clear parameters defining exactly what the differences between Fantasy and Science Fiction are. My understanding is: Fantasy=nothing past basic tech, IE steampunk/gunpowder, and the use of magic (science without explanation). Science Fiction= draws from possibly realistic, or partially explained scientific plots and events. This third category 'Science Fantasy' is moot, because both categories are essentially a measure of technological advancement. If you have swords but no lasers, it's fantasy, if you have laser but no swords it's science fiction, if you have both swords and lasers(and even magic), it's still science fiction. Even if the science is so far convoluted and unbelievable, it's still science FICTION. The word fiction in the term 'science fiction' takes care of any arguement that the science isn't real enough, its a FICTION movie. Something is only magic until someone explains to you the science behind it, then it becomes fact.
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted November 7, 2011 I don't see how a fight can exist about them being one or the other. A FANTASY can be SCIENCE FICTION. Thats is true, sense fiction = fantasy. No, it is called a Genre: Western, Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy, etc. Fiction is a Genre all it's own and is used for stories that can't be placed in another genre. Go to a library or Barns and Nobles and they will have a FICTION section and Science Fiction section in different areas. That is basically not true, Midi-chlorians are a microorganism first mentioned in The Phantom Menace. Actually it is. One movie explained it and it was created YEARS after the original three. Plus when your break it down STORY WISE STar Wars focus is on THE FORCE and DARK SIDE. Because of this plot line and a unrational SUPERNATURAL ability is the focus of the WHOLE STORY Star Wars at its core is Fantasy. Just because it has space ships and only explains 1% of the science behind ANYTHING doesn't make it Science Fiction. Now this is based on the MOVIES not the comic books or novels which I agree are Science Fiction. However, the movies at their core are Fantasy because of the main plot: What the Hell Is STAR WARS Anyway — Science Fiction or Fantasy? Is Star Wars Fantasy or Science Fiction Star Wars FAQ: Is Star Wars Sci-Fi or Fantasy? Star Wars is not Science Fiction Is Star Wars science fiction or fantasy? This third category 'Science Fantasy' is moot, because both categories are essentially a measure of technological advancement. Something is only magic until someone explains to you the science behind it, then it becomes fact. Actually you are completely incorrect. If I write a novel with elves and dragons in it, it doesn't mean it is FANTASY at its core. I could easily have the plot focus be scientific in nature with space ships, traveling the galaxy, and having Dragons as an alien life form and then I have a clear cut Science Fiction novel because the elves and dragons would be considered aliens; no magic or hocus pokus. And If I created a story with magic, elves, dragons, dwarves, etc and the main focus is scientific in nature (meaning magic is not the main part of the story) it could be contorted as Science Fiction. The point here is just because a story may use a laser sword doesn't make it Science Fiction and just because it uses as regulare sword also doesn't make it Fantasy. It is ALL based on THE FOCUS of the PLOT.

Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted November 8, 2011 I totally agree! You can have both. Technically science fiction is fantasy. From a literary stand point, they are not the same. From a purely word defining stand point, yes fantasy does encompass science fiction, that goes without saying. We are not discussing the root definition of the words, but rather their definitions as they pertain to literary(media) categories. Both fantasy and science fiction are forms of speculative fiction. Since no one wants to clearly define what the definition of science fiction and fantasy are(as they pertain to literature, not the webster`s definition), I will take it upon myself to at least show the wiki definitions, which include parameters as to define each genre. Science Fiction Fantasy Before anyone freaks out about wikipedia, all the sentences are cited, and all references are reputable. With that said, I also suggest that everyone read up on hard science fiction, and soft science fiction, as these are far from new terms, and they help to further define science fiction. As frequent reader, these terms are not new to me, however wikipedia works as an excellent reference for others to become informed as well. In any event, use the above parameters to define what category a body of work falls under.
