Dragon324 16 Report post Posted November 16, 2011 (edited) As your first game you may want to look at tutorials which you can find here on this site. This is not mandatory but this is how I did mine: 1. Come up with a story that you are interested in telling and develop it into dialogue and scenes. 2. Start mapping and eventing the story you have created. Sometimes what maps should be used can be answered by your storyline. 3. Start thinking and adding things that makes your game more unique. For example things like crafting, mining, mercenary hiring, just things that add to the story but also deter from just a straight out rpg. 4. Start adding appropriate music to each scene. 5. Don't forget the little things, things like sound effects, and simple door, chest, or fountain animations add to the game. 6. Play test a lot, this is so you can see for yourself if you like how your game is turning out, and so you can fix bugs. Like I said this is just some helpful thoughts, I myself ignored a lot of these at first which leads me to: Don't give up and keep trying/ editing, you said this was your first attempt so like me your gonna make a lot of mistakes but however there are people like me who are willing to give you advice and help you. Well hope that helps some. NVM- Pol beat me to xD. Forgot that you even made that lolz Edited November 16, 2011 by Dragon324
Bigace360 38 Report post Posted November 16, 2011 Some advise would be to play around with RMXP first before doing anything that Polraudio said. The reason why is because you might rush your project or be confused on what things do. Once your used to what the engine does then you should attempt to work on your project. Heres a tip, when you start up RMXP; go to Help and click on contents. That help function actually helps a lot in working on your game as if your working in the database and get confused on a term, well type it in there and it should tell. Now if your still confused or if the Help contents doesn't give you what you want then it would be a good ideal to ask as someone can help you with it. Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted November 17, 2011 I couldn't agree more with bigace. I suggest you start with something really simple, like a hermit that lives on an island. So one house, with an indoor and outdoor map, one world map, and one other area linked from the world map. Or like a fairy tale or fable. IE little red riding hood, or the three little pigs. Something short, with 1 of everything(indoor, outdoor, dungeon). As you do that you should get inspired and get some good ideas, write those down much as dragon, and pol suggested, to plan for your real project you can make after you get some of the skills and practice much as ace suggested. Think painting fruit before you paint a portrait. Also, this site has a chat program you can frequent in order to ask questions, as well as use your status update to ask quick questions regarding eventing etc. Ultimately, you can always download someone else's demo and learn by example, see how they made, doors, talking npcs, etc. and learn the eventing system that way. Heretic86 25 Report post Posted November 17, 2011 I like to say Push the Limits. Then you can know what those Limits are, what you can improve on, as well as what not to try again. It is just as important to experience how NOT to make an RPG game as it is to experience how to make an RPG game.
