Kange 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2012 (edited) Grass?! but thats so boring and basic D: ... Exactly! Great place to start. Besides, can't have a world if its not standin on nothin, right? Ok so i use GraphicsGale, soo thats what this will be made in. I find it to be the best for making pixel art because its grided(that even a word -.-) very nicely ^^ so open GraphicsGale ( if you dont ahve it, go here ---> http://www.humanbala...s/download.html ) and abunch of boxes usually appear, i clear em sept the palette cause honestly, i ahve no idea what they are for -.-... SO! File, New, 32x32, find center and zoom like crazy ^^.Oh, somewhere below where it says window is the picture of a grid, click that..ya..First tut, can you tell -.-.. Ok, now, select a nice green color and just paint bucket that sucker nice and green. This is the start of your new grass. Now, there are many different ways to make grass. Probably the easiest is this: (first image)there are many great reasons to use this technique. 1) its fast 2) its easy 3) its super easy to change the colors for different terrains, ex: image2,, and lastly 4) if your looking for the fastest way to get kicked in the nuts, there you have it. on top of that, just look at the aount of immersion in your game youll have(image 4). captivating, isnt it? Moving on from that, is spray grass it looks better, but, it will need touching up. just go into paint, and paste a green background. select a lighter green and an even lighter green and spray all around. Then take the image into a graphics editing program and cut out a 32x32 pixel block and there you ahve it, looks liek this(image 4) ok it would look like image 4 if windows didnt cheap out on paint and take spray out of windows 7...how do you downgrade on a new o.s. -.- really guys? ok well thats how you do it. anyway, the third way, which i prefer is the line method. SORRY THE IMAGES ARE SO FRIGGIN HUGE D: jsut scroll to the middle and youll see what im talking bout in the tut T.T Go into graphics gale and make a 32x32 grid and paint it green.after selecting your green, move the slider 5 shades lighter and go crazy with the lines. you wont notice to much of a difference, but thats ok. move the slider up 5 more shades and repeat. once more, and good. now, go back to your original color and do the same for the dark. use your lightest color one more time for a touch up and you ahve a background. just a bunch of pixels, right? well, right...select your darkest color and move the slider down about 15 shades. make small lines that move up and to the right/left. make sure to go off the edges and come onto the edges at different hights as well, jsut dont go to crazy. bout 10 lines should do it for now.move the slider down by 10, repeat, down by 10, repeat. Now you should have something like this (image 4) Here, you make a new tileset and import the tile, and spread it all over. youll notice dark and light places that will need fixing.(image 5) youll notice red cirlcles. those are places where its obvious this games on a grid, which were trying to conceal. By adding a few touch ups on the edges, we can hide teh grid. im also going to darken my grass here a bit. The end result is image 6, well defined grass, you know what it is, cant see a noticable grid and with soem flowers and rocks, it will look alot better then it does as straight grass. *isnt an expert* well there you go, i hope that helped! also, to get a sandy look, you can use some yellows and tans for the mid-light base colors, mid darkish greens, then the dark blades like here, for autumn, you can use reds and oranges, hay/ dead grass you can use browns and light yellos/tans, snow covered, sprinkle white pixels around the grass and use blues etc. will post examples later. off to bed for now! straw/hay/dead grass (images 7,8) autumn/sunset grass (images 9,10) snowy grass(images 11,12) sandy grass(images 13,14) if you ahve any more grass types youd like to see here, let me know and ill be happy to make em for ya! RageMage 5 Report post Posted January 16, 2012 Oh Graphics Gale, I remember this program it was very useful when I had used it but I still use GIMP personally.
Kange 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2012 my friend insists on gimp. its great for somethings. but i coudlnt really get the accuracy that i can with gale. if i need an effect, its easy to switch between em, so i stick to gale for initial disign. i have a stained glass window on my other profile, debugging comp now, should b able to acess it soon to post if anyone is interested. i guess ill get started on those other examples then since i wont be goin to sleep today..whoo..
