I am buying a PS Vita

Recommended Posts

So I preordered my unit of the PS Vita. The specific model I preordered is the First Edition Bundle which includes:

  • PS Vita 3G/WiFi System
  • Power Charger
  • Six AR Cards
  • Voucher to download AR Play Mini Games
  • 4GB PS Vita Proprietary Memory Card (mistake fixed)
  • Little Deviants
  • Limited Edition PS Vita Case

Because this is the first edition bundle I'll be able to get my hands on it the 15th of this month (next Wednesday) as opposed to the launch date of the 22nd. Can't wait to experience this beast of a handheld with a decent lineup of games. I also own a launch 3DS and although the 3DS is awesome I only purchased 4 3DS games, but with the Vita I can already count 8 games to buy alongside the included Little Deviants.

LittleBIGPlanet

ModNation Racers

Gravity Rush

Dynasty Warriors

Wipeout

Ninja Gaiden

Lumines Electronic Symphony

Disgaea 3

There never once was a system with 8 games within the launch lineup I am interested in buying. Sony hit the nail on the head with a system launch, and hope they'll do the same with the PS4.

Sounds awesome! Wish I could get one, just now had enough money for a PS3. Tell us when you get it and how much fun it is! :D

I'm getting the same thing to. But I hate to burst your bubble Knuckles. We still only get the 4GB memory card. The 8GB is for people buying on release date. Just even watched a video Playstation Blog posted of them unwrapping the First Edition Bundle and they even said it's a 4GB memory card.

I might get one after i see how people like them. I heard bad things about them so far in japan. Hopefully those things get ironed out.

Really, oh well. A 4GB is better than no memory card I suppose, plus owning a 320GB PS3 Slim I can just trade files between my memory card and PS3. Not too disappointed it's still worth it. Better than the $250 I spent on a 3DS which ended up with a price drop in the middle of the first year.

@Polraudio

I heard Sony fixed some of those issues with a FW update. Systems were freezing and touch screens weren't responsive. Plus I'll get warranty coverage with this thing as it's something I do when buying CE's exceeding $100. I've had things break after the typical 1-year warranty expires due to poor design before and that is no fun.

Isn't there an Uncharted game for the Vita coming out? I believe I saw it in action on E3, looked amazing. Oh, that reminds me. Is it true you don't "buy" games phsycially, but web wise?

Yes, Uncharted: Golden Abyss. You can buy games in the form of a physical copy like every other system. You can also purchase and download the games from the PS Store if you want. The physical copies come in blue cases and use a card-based media unlike the PSP.

I'm really excited for Uncharted: Golden Abyss. I am a huge fan of the series. I can't wait to get my hands on that game.

And yes 4GB is better then no memory card.

Ah, good to know. I was about to go "its a doomed system if it only allows you to buy games online". xD

It wouldn't take off without physical media. Our Internet infrastructure in the US, one of the most important markets in video games, is one of the worst in the Western world and ISPs are pushing data caps on what we used to have unlimited data. I used to have unlimited data now it's limited. Having the ability to download GBs of data within minutes is also in the minority of US households.

As a video game collector having physical media is good news. I have a passion for having bookshelves full of those colorful boxes vs. just strolling through the menus to find a game. Less convenient, yes, but games mean more than just computer data to me.

So far after a day with my Vita I must say I am in love. It's so sexy. Only thing that dissappoints me so far is I gotta wait til next week for the AR games and the apps.

The "Welcome Park" game is actually pretty fun and teaches you the basic of the system. Uncharted is awesome!

I wish I could get the VITA but it costs way more than my PS3. Screw it. I'll wait til prices drop.

Got mine too. The only game I own thus far is the included Little Deviants. It is an okay game, some challenges are fun, some are repetitive. I wish there's more variety like actual platform levels. Oh well, it's pretty much a tech demo. Loving the near app and already met a few people around my area that happen to own a Vita. Not home right now but I'll post some photos of the system eventually.

And apparently you can get a FREE* 8GB Memory Card and a downloadable game with your First Edition system.

I honestly haven't even put little Deviants into the system yet. Once Uncharted hit it, that was it. Love this game.

And yea I seen that about the 8GB Mem and Game thing. Good luck signin' up to the AT&T thing though. Keeps giving me errors and one person on Vita forums said they contacted AT&T and they said they we're having problems with their activation servers. >_

Believe me you likely won't enjoy it, but it is worth a try since part of the system's price goes toward the game.

How does Uncharted: Golden Abyss compare to the PS3 games? Is it more like the first game with a lot of jungle setting? I really enjoy the first game.

Just got a gig to demo the new Vita at two different store locations. Not sure what exactly they are going to let me fiddle around with, but I should have access to a good majority of what is out for the system in a few days. I'll post here if they send me anything cool.

@Knuckles. I actually don't mind Little Deviants, finally played it last night. Kinda of fun to play. Little hard at first but not to bad once you get used to what's going on. And Uncharted is a Jungle setting game yes. I beat it last night, it was an awesome game.

So I got my Package on Thursday finally, and was supposed to get it a week before that. Pictures below.

A picture of me with my official Sony Rep t-shirt.

Obviously ignore the date time, since my camera must be from 2007 lol.

They sent me two games(mod nation, little deviants), a Vita, and a 4gig memory card.

SonyRepMe.jpg

Here is the stall in Future Shop I manned, it had I believe 8 or so game demos on it, of them that I can remember(since I couldnt stand and play it the whole time), were Hot Shots Golf, Mod Nation, Little Deviants, Uncharted, and more.

100_0145.jpg

I still have the system they sent me and have been playing around with it. I am thoroughly impressed, and that's coming from a gamer who hates touch screen interface.

20 games so far out for the system, with 70 already in development, and 5 current PS3 titles that share cross platform gaming(pause and continue on PSV)

They gave me a whole slew of information, so I decided to do a write up, keep an eye out for it on this sites blogs early next week.

I am definitely going to buy one, once they make me mail the one I have back to them.

Today I purchased 3 new Vita games at Best Buy: Uncharted, Hot Shots Golf, and Touch my Katamari.

I am playing my first playthrough on Uncharted in hard mode right now. The game is the underdog of the franchise, which I really appreciate. It doesn't feel overly cinematic but just fun, and the jungle setting is abundant. The brutal combat in the game is really cool with the finger gestures. Definitely one of my favorite games.

The other games are still in their shrinkwrap until I platinum this game.

Completing the mysteries and treasures is gonna be the tricky part of platinum on that game haha. I know I got over half of that stuff done. And done beat it on Hard and Crushing and just going back to treasure hunt. What's your name Knuckles on PSN? I'll add you.

Just finished my first and hard playthrough. It's a really fun game, if a bit repetitive at the last chapters (the cavern is so ugly, long and boring). The ending is cool though. The jungle setting is what made this game so great.

But one thing, although I completed it on Hard I don't see a Crushing mode when selecting New Game. I got the difficulty trophies as they stack, but I see no Crushing as an option.

Also I'll PM you my PSN/SEN.

In order to choose crushing you need to go into Chapter Select and change the difficulty on first one and just play through it then.

Figures. I am at chapter 21 so far on Crushing. Chapter 11, the level where you had to run with Case out of the gunfire is pretty tough. Took me an unnumbered amount of tries but I eventually got it. However I was not sure if I was doing it right. Definitely a fun game though, and the game doesn't make you re-do all the puzzles you have previously completed, thus they won't slow you down.

You have no idea how many times I did Chapter 11 myself. One time I almsot had it, I was at that log at the end and Chase knocked me off. I wanted to throw it at a wall. But a little bit later I got it haha. And yea I thought it was awesome that you don't have to re-do all the puzzles on it.

Ok I am at the first QTE battle with Dante, and it is surprisingly frustrating. Much of the strokes won't register correctly. What am I doing right? What am I doing wrong? When I get to the curved strokes I almost always fail them, and I fail many, many times before it. Because this is on Crushing I only get one shot.

If it is just poor game design then I am not buying another Bend game again. Plus on my Crushing play through much of this game's flaws have been sticking out. Another part is I failed at an unnumbered amount of tries attempting to defend Sully when he is crippled up (back in the ruins) but because of his poor AI programming I died many times...er...I mean Sully died many times. I eventually got it though. He sure was the weakest link of the team and wouldn't even take cover. I like hard games, but this is no hard game, it is a broken game. There is a difference.

I am starting to not like this game. It's a shame too, it had a lot of potential and the story is well written. But this is just criminal. Between Chapter 11, defending NPCs with poor AI, and the QTE fights that are broken, touchscreen-related problems like these better only be on this game and not on other major game releases or else I will seriously regret my Vita purchase and return to my Nintendo 3DS. Not going to sell my Vita as a collector but it would be only used for games of the iOS caliber and jRPGs.

i haven't had any touchscreen issues, knuckles...

Oh, and in case u or wyz dont know, your stroke doesn't have to be over the arrow on the screen, so long as your stroke is in that direction.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it. Anyway, was playing Katamari and the game is fun, to me anyway. The touch controls are just perfect. No major problems. Like any Katamari game it is a stupid game but a very fun game.

Edit: No dice. I even downloaded the latest patch recently and still no dice. Apparently many others are having the same problem. The strokes don't always register properly regardless if I went the correct direction or not, or how firm, or how long the strokes are, the game drops the ball at every attempt at this fight. Most of the strokes register but there is always a stroke that won't, hell even the first stroke wouldn't register at times and I did it perfectly...

The conclusion is, I have had it.

EDIT 2:

I have searched the internet for comments regarding this fight, here's what the comments say on a YouTube video

This fight is freaking me out, i do the movement perfectly and it only accepts when it wants, thats the truth

I think I'm gonna fucking break my vita. Im doing this perfect and it says some are wrong. bend studio are fuking shit.

Doing this b/s boss battle on Crushing (one mistake = death and you get swirly ones). Wouldn't be so bad if it would register all the fucking swipes properly. D:< Love this game, but it's flawed. Like Naughty Dog's first Uncharted. So it's understandable.

ah im stuck on this as i type this in, every time i do the swipe it wont register im doing it sleep.png

So apparently I am one of these people.

Then we have this comment

Ok, i just needed to clean my screen and it became easy to fight

I did clean my screen, no dice. But I'll clean it again... However I seriously hope the one guy won't break his Vita one day. I would never feel tempted to break a whole system over a lousy game. Whatever dude...

EDIT 3: Ok I found something useful, I wrapped my finger with a lint-free cloth (crazy I know, but it really helps, and it prevents screen from getting smudgy doing this fight) and did all the gestures. I did still fail many times but found something, you have to have perfect timing. When an arrow appears on the screen BE AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE TO COMPLETE THE STROKE, like before the entire arrow shows up. The second CURVE gesture (the one that starts from top right then it turns toward bottom left) you actually start this gesture further from the top right of the screen than where the arrow begins, this part here is very, very tricky but that is just how it is unfortunately. After this gesture the fight gets less predictable and need to pay close attention so it gets pretty challenging.

I eventually passed this QTE fight, thankfully, after many, many attempts. What a relief. I hope I can do the final boss fight better. I like challenges but still am having a hard time deciding if it's a broken game or not but wish me luck getting the platinum.

      Touched by Vita

You may or may not have heard that Sony Entertainment has released their new hand held gaming system recently the Play Station Vita (PSV). Anyone who reordered a system was able to play a week in advance. Similarly, Sony reps were hired by third party advertising agencies and sent a PSV early in order to prepare for an in store demonstration. I fall into the latter category and had the honor of demoing the Vita in Future Shop and Wal-mart.

I was sent 1 PS Vita, 2 Games(Mod Nation Racers, Little Deviants) and 1 4G memory stick. On top of that I was also given information regarding the system, its games, future games and system specs. Because they sent me such detailed and extensive information I figured why not compile it into something informative and present it to people who want to know, and that is what you are reading.

      Gaming
If you don't already know, then I will be the first to tell you the Vita does not play UMD's (the game cartridge for PSP). The does have its own format simply know as Game Cards. To use the Vita a serious gaming system it is definitely recommended you buy a Memory Card.
So far from the games I have played developers do not seem to be forcing players to use touch or motion features unnecessarily, and some games are even giving the option to choose either control scheme.
Below are three links with varying games listed. Using these lists you can help determine whether now or later is the time for you to buy a PSV.
Confirmed Games List w Extra Information

      Announced but Dateless List

      Complete List

      Current Cross Platform Games
      MotorStorm RC

      Hustle Kings
      WipEout HD
      WipEout 2048 HD Fury DLC
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC

      Feature Overview
Below I will go over each feature and explain what their intended purpose and current function are.

      Online
With two versions of the system, one including wifi capabilities, and one including both wifi and 3G (cell phone internet) data plan capabilities, the right PSV will go online anywhere a cell phone can. With that multiplayer online gaming can be had anywhere. Additionally, you will be able to give in game gifts to players based on real world locations (pending game developer inclement). Imagine I am playing a hack and slash sword game, I walk to my local coffee shop where they have wifi access, I use an in game feature to place a gift on the ground, and any Vita user playing that game who goes to that local can receive my gift. Add in a 3G network, and users could potentially be placing rare and unique items for game use anywhere in the real world.
NOTE: The 3G network is not available in Canada yet, as a provider has not been chosen by Sony. This may be the same in other regions.

      Cameras
The system has two built in cameras, one rear and one front facing. Both cameras come with the ability to record, with the front camera focusing on recording the user and the rear camera focusing on recording environment.
The front camera lends itself perfectly to applications like Skype, allowing Vita users to video chat with other Skype users, effectively turning your Vita into a free(Skype to Skype) cell phone (using a paid for 3G data plan, or wifi connection).
The rear camera can be used to record footage, show video chatters what you are seeing, or even record your environment for interaction within games. One mini game in little deviants, turns on the rear camera to allow you to see your environment and shoot small flying planes that appear to fly around your world.

      Touch Screen
With a 5 inch (16:9), ~960 x 544, 16 million colors, OLED capacity type multi touch screen, you can’t quite go wrong. I have used smart phones, this is no smart phone. This is a ‘Touch Screen’ plain and simple, it works much better than any smart phone I have ever used.
You will find that the touch screen is however the main user interface for the menus inside the Vita. This does annoy me, and many people who tried the PSV demo immediate tried to control the menus with the directional pad, or the analog stick and I had to tell them, hey it’s touch screen. But then it became second nature.
I strongly recommend buying protective screen films. They are roughly $4 for pack of 2 films, and they are worth every penny.

      Rear Touch Pad
What’s a rear touch pad? It’s a touch screen on the back of the controller with no screen. Example uses include, binding L2 and R2 for PS3 games, one little deviant mini game is a classic arcade style shooter, but as the guys appear you can only attack enemies with their back to you. If they are facing forward you have to ‘shoot’ them by tapping the back of the system in the appropriate corresponding rear touch pad area.
The applications for this could be endless, I could see use for beat/music style games, for skill based mini games, and much more.

      Six-Axis Motion
That’s right, its basically a PS3 controller too. Use the controller as a plane or car, maybe a jump or dodge function. Again the limits are endless. The one noteable down side to this is that you have to literally look at the object you are trying to move, it can become distracting, but I suppose that’s part of the challenge!

      Sound
That’s right sound. Why? Because if you owned a PSP, you know using voice on it wasn’t exactly easy (unless you bought the right piece when it was common). The PSV however has a built in microphone and stereo speakers. And it fully supports standard headphones. That’s right, Skype ready and goes on a 3G network.

      Feature Testing
Using the Welcome Park app, you can test the different features listed above.

      Bluetooth 2.1
It even allows you to pair your favorite Bluetooth devices to it. I have yet to research as far as what is compatible, but rest assured headsets are.

      Built in GPS
This is used for the ‘leaving game gifts’ function, and the system does not yet have an app that utilizes this function fully. Someone will inevitably create a GPS app for it. Imagine using your PSV as your car’s navigation system.

      Conclusion

I decided against buying one. Mostly because I rarely have the time to power game these days, and I couldn't justify the money on a day one product if I am not going to actively use it. However, I would recommend this system to anyone who likes to video game, or anyone who takes trips or travels a lot. This system gives me huge hopes for the PS4 and what it will bring when the time comes. Sony has definitely stepped up the hand held gaming industry with this release.
