Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Bon Ink Creations is my development company I am recently attempting to get officially off the ground. I have long been looking into the many different aspects of running ones own business, for a little over three years now. Based on my level of skill in this field, combined with the other skilled people I have met, I have begun recruiting talented and passionate people with like minded goals to join my company. Thinking I would need a website to coordinate efforts at first, I realized a staff forum would likely function much more efficiently for the time being, rather then building a custom system from scratch. So I found a free forum hosting spot, signed up and created my forum. I have minimal experience setting up a forum, as I have done it a few times in the past, but I keep running into issues I can not solve. Or issues that take me hours to look into to find the solution. This is an unacceptable use of my time, but needed none the less, so I do it. This is where a forum Admin would come in. I need someone who is already familiar with forum setup and maintenance, or who can at least familiarize themselves with this system. The person in question would be doing this for free for the time being, but will receive any and all games released through the company for free(no cost to them), and potentially special benefits from released games, such as exclusive content, or incorporation into the game itself, as a name, likeness rights, or hidden photo etc. The person who chooses to admin will also be first choice for permanent paid admin in the future. The demands for the forum should be rather small, as it is purely for staff and not a community based forum. It is however open to the public, common members can only post topics in general areas, and reply in areas where feedback is needed. The host is forumotion, so if you are familiar with their setup and design that's a plus. I am looking for someone who not only will be available most of the time during daylight hours for EST(-5:00 zone), but will likely be able to complete requests for forum operation changes within a few hours to maximum of 24hrs after receiving the request. Frequenting the site is not needed, you will only need a way to be contacted, ideally receiving instant emails from PM through our forums. If this interests you please contact me through PM here on the site, Email at BonInkCreations@hotmail.com or reply with questions to this thread. I will directly give the link to people interested and would prefer not to post it in the open until the site has an admin and is properly setup. Thank you for your interest and I hope to find someone to work with in the future. Edited July 22, 2012 by Jon Bon
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted May 20, 2012 I know lots about being a forum Admin. The only problem i have is mysql. I dont really know much about the database. So when you have to move to a paid hosting I wouldn't know how to go about making the database work after transfer. If you need anything else i will be glad to moderate your forums and possibly help you develop games.
Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) That's awesome Pol. Yeah moving the forum over was definitely a consideration, but my hopes is by that time I can hopefully justify paying a professional to do it etc. I am thinking most if not all the information should really be temporary stuff, that once games are released becomes irrelevant, so I am not sure if I will even need to keep anything when we move to a real owned forum. Definitely need moderators too, which of course an Admin qualified would be able to fill the role, which you indeed are. In my humble opinion you are an excellent candidate, especially since you are an rmxpu staff as well. My intention is to use my forums for staff functions, but strongly encourage project leads to use this site for their community feedback, and technical support needs. Having someone who knows both sites well is ideal. I have sent you a personal message with the link and more details. Thanks for the quick response! EDIT: And yeah as far as developing games go, definitely. I didn't mean to avoid that part, I forgot. You are most definitely one of the people I intended to contact. Just gotta take things one step at a time. This whole base of operations became an apparent need. Edited May 20, 2012 by Jon Bon

I kinda do it for a living atm :P Databases are really simple once you understand what's going on. Even the language reads like a sentence: select name from table_users order by id limit 1, will give you the first time name of the first row in the table_users table. Etc. I'm unfamiliar with the free host, unless its IPB1.3 or something because thats where this forum started, but can I have the link anyway? :)
Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted May 22, 2012 Due to our collaboration, you know I'm at your service for stuff like this? I have the link anyway? Hehe. I like to create fair opportunity, so I figured post it and you never know I might meet someone new at the same time. Also, although I may be knowleged in the areas I am, I am very low when it comes to this stuff, so low it's hard to even gauge what kind of assistance I need and who can grant it. I more than appreciate the enthusiastic response. I will link you the address by all means, and if anyone else wants it, feel free to post here or ask, I would just prefer not to post it public for anyone until its setup etc. The theme is still temporary, and such. Marked 197 Report post Posted May 22, 2012 I quite like the theme. In relation to staff recruitment, personally and with rmxpu, I tend to find publically advertising a staff position can lead to adverse effects (different from the purpose of this topic though, of course). For example you may get interest from new members who want to jump on as staff, probably for the wrong reasons, and don't really do anything. I can barely remember my startup but I had a lot of time to learn so I didn't need anyone else immediately. But eventually once you have a decent user base you can identify members already committed to your community and you know they're going to do a good job. A perfect example of this is with Kellessdee. I practically forced him to be a mod EDIT: As a reference for Pol, he comes highly recommended. Loyalty is a big plus too. Just remember I got first priority

Loyalty is a big plus too. Just remember I got first priority I couldn't agree more. This is why in the outlined case above, I would have linked them to my recruitment thread on my site, which states you have to have 1 year minimum experience. I would also ask for references etc to where they had been an admin. The post here is far more polite, and friendly and less professional as the one on my site, I would have made strangers, or new people here jump through hoops to prove themselves. And rightfully so for the chance to get a pay job, and free merchandise. As far as not doing anything, I need/needed work done right away, and tasked pol immediately, so I would know within seconds if they were faking it. I totally agree with what you said above, but I have done real life hiring for jobs before, plus dealt with public relations, I can read people a mile away. For these reasons, I never hesitate to recruit publicly. As far as Pol specifically. I have read a large majority of what all the active members have posted here, and have a very good understanding of their motivations and work habits etc. So I never had doubts in how awesome he would be. But luckily since I made friends with his friend(ackley14), I have spoken with Pol over skype, and now am confident in my impressions as him, as a solid individual. Hehe yeah, I would hope first priority to RMXPU indeed, way more stuff for an admin to do here. I just need his brain lol. But with all that said, as I felt I had to, I value you opinions huge, because you have achieved more at your age then I have yet. EDIT: Thanks on the theme choice. Was the one I liked the most out of the first 30 or so picks. Pol choice the buttons up top cause I was having issue. Definitely want a custom one eventually, but since it's a work type site, im happy as long as it serves it's purpose hehe. Aesthetics be damned, as long as it's not neon. EDIT 2: @Marked gave ya admin, so you can tinker, and see what the system is all about. Edited May 22, 2012 by Jon Bon
Marked 197 Report post Posted May 22, 2012 But with all that said, as I felt I had to, I value you opinions huge, because you have achieved more at your age then I have yet. Thanks While I have been stalled probably since '10, the success of this site can be attributed the members, in particular the current long serving staff and RMXPU legends. But return should always be proportionate to effort. EDIT: Thanks on the theme choice. Was the one I liked the most out of the first 30 or so picks. Aesthetics be damned, as long as it's not neon. Haha well I believe those things are severely limited since you cannot modify the actual HTML, you can merely apply CSS styles to them by adding css to the head in the ACP (thats how we did in '06 anyway). I searched through many themes for my old site and eventually found one I liked. Looking at it is very symbolic these days.
Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted May 22, 2012 I am fairly sure you can break them down to raw code, and edit it accordingly. I definitely remember a section like that. At least the members profile pages.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted May 22, 2012 I seen an option to import/export themes. You might be able to export it and edit the HTML then import it?

Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted May 26, 2012 BUMP This position is currently unfilled due to the first candidate needing to pursue other stuff with their free time. I would ask that anyone who applies look at this as something they will be doing for the next few months minimum. When money starts coming in you will be one of the first to get a kickback. I need someone who already has enough free time they are willing to dedicate to me without changing their mind. Thank you for your consideration, Jon Bon
Bigace360 38 Report post Posted May 26, 2012 I would apply as I have a bunch of free time but I know nothing of being an Admin.
Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted May 27, 2012 You could definitely be trained, and if were willing to dedicate the time, I would be willing to pay you some nominal for your efforts, plus the already promised rewards. If no one qualified applies I will give you serious consideration if you are truly interested.

ShinGamix 1 Report post Posted July 2, 2012 (edited) Again JB I admin 2 forums at the moment and know a lot about your current service provider and how their forums work. I am willing to admin it if you need me too. Edit-Wow I can't believe my space bar didn't work one time while I was typing this. I am willing to admin it if you need me too. If you did this, I would prefer one or the other between the video gig I need and this because either could become demanding and more than one person can handle. I will take it into consideration once I have finished the hiring process for the video editor. Thanks again for your thought, I appreciate the post.
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted July 2, 2012 Jon, should you ever need to get a real forum. I have a License for vBulletin that I don't use. v/Respectfully, Keven 1 ShinGamix reacted to this
Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted July 2, 2012 Jon, should you ever need to get a real forum. I have a License for vBulletin that I don't use. v/Respectfully, Keven I appreciate the offer, but I think what we have will suffice for now. I intend to spend more time focused on developing games and helping others publish than building shiny store front, at least for the time being. Thanks again, anyhow! -Cheers. Jon Bon 43 Report post Posted July 3, 2012 I wasn't offering a store front. o_O I suppose 'store front' was not the right metaphor. I believe if I had of said "I intend to spend more time focused on developing games and helping others publish than building shiny office space, at least for the time being." that would have applied better. The point I was trying to make is I don't need a dedicated forum, with an awesome UI and what not to make games, that's kind of secondary to the process. Our forum is really only for basic forum purposes and why it's on a free provider. I do appreciate the effort, it's just super low on the priority list of things I want, and doesn't even make the list of needs. But again, thanks anyhow!
